Correction: all audio recorded with BCM705. I did not update the mic name when adding the lower thirds. The gain setting and audio boost is correct though.
This thing was designed to do one thing well. Broadcast. I think it has a level of polish and finesse that the SM7B and RE20 lack. The vocal response is smooth as silk. You're listening to the quiet storm.
Wow. This mic sounds amazing on spoken words. It's clear, balanced and smooth. A joy to listen to! Also did very well on your singing, but there are probably mics that would be a better suit for that.
I’m so glad you’re still uploading I’ve been watching so many of your old videos and you’ve helped me so muc with my mic choice! Dynamic microphones are perfect for a noisy household!!
This is such an under rated, under discussed mic. I'd totally have it over the SM7B and RE20...that top end is sweet. I can only guess it's the relatively steep price that keeps the BCM-705 out of the conversation with those other two mics.
I like it quite a bit, loved it on voice and was very surprised how good it sounded on the acoustic guitar. If I were made of money, I'd use this microphone.
I watch mic reviews pretty often, and this is one of the better ones I've come across. You hit every nail on the head what tests to test, and gave a great overview of the characters of the mic. Looking forward to seeing more reviews like this!
Quality review and I am sold for a podcast sound. I have had the MXL4000 forever and still use it for lots of applications especially the polar pattern but just like the idea of getting my own mic, let my wife get all the way over there with her own mic! She is such a close talker so perfect!
I love all of your reviews! If I need to know something or have any questions, I just come over to your channel and see what you have to say. You always have a style that is easy to follow. So, not only do I always learn something but I'm also entertained. Thank you so much for everything you do.
I have been wondering about that mic, great job on this review. I really like the design of this mic, and thanks for opening it up too, and the inside reveal under the grill.
Can you do a comparison with the BCM 104? A lot of people are saying the 104 is the TLM 103 but better due to cleaning up a lot of the ambience. I'm curious on your take.
@@Podcastage Your comments are sounding a little coo-coo cashew, but I'm sure I am just unfamiliar with the rules. It is true that my judgement can be called into question. I am not in the least offended by your stupid face. While I'm here, may I suggest a large cardboard box labelled "Mic Box Box". You could place it behind you, against the wall perhaps, and try to dunk, without looking, each box you toss. For motivation, you might place a photo or a child's caricature of a neighbour, for example, at the bottom of the Mic Box Box. It might make a satisfying sound as it hits bottom. As do we all. As do we all. T
Fun fact: This mic's capsule is derived from if not identical to the capsule in the Sennheiser MD431, so the MD431 is like this Neumann's handheld older brother
Well Now I have to have it. Was curious on how it sounded and it really sounds good. Can't wait for the V.S. Videos with it. And yeah I can see you not liking it for the electric guitar if your wanting that low growl that tends to come out of the amp when playing with distortion and effects. However it did deliver the guitar. I would speculate that Bass captured on this microphone would be a technic feat and skill to do right. And I think you now have all of the Broadcast dynamics so... Time for a shoot out !!!
That’s what I was trying to figure out this morning. Have I don’t ALL the broadcast dynamics now? I’ve even got the new ones with the Podmic and Stealth. Not sure if the Podmic would belong in that list though.
I do.. BUT not for the majority of people. The mic is great for a heavy processing. Basically what I am saying is, if you aren't running your mic through an optimod (or similar processors whether digital or hardware) with European style processing (loud and bright vs the UK/US more dark) get literally anything else.
What a great microphone. If only it wasn't friggen 854 AUD bucks here, lol. I suppose it's better than paying over a grand, though, the TLM stuff sounds incredible. Also, loved the acoustic part of that song.
Podcastage Is it a recording of a processed signal or a clean signal from a microphone? if the signal is clear, then this is a good microphone, nice sound ???
Hello.. Can i ask for sth.. My mic cable isnt xlr so it comes just with 3.5 jack.. So you cant unplug the cable from the mic.. And i feel like it's gonna be cut after using.. How can i protect it?
Demo_ sy Then you have a weird microphone but you can use heat shrinking tube (Google it) it’s tube that shrinks when you heat it with a hairdryer for example. I use that a lot on usb cables.
@podcastage I think that there is going to be a new samson mic called the satellite coming out pretty soon, when it does would you be able to do a review of it ? I'm unsure if it will be a better fit than the Q2U thanks!
I have one just like it, but when I connect it to the Scarlett, it records very low, I connect the phantom and the same thing happens, but I feel it is my XLR cable. My question: What kind of XLR cable do you need to connect? Is there a special specification? In Hz or something? Thank you very much in advance
It does not require a specialized cable. XLR to XLR should be sufficient. If you have this exact model the phantom power is not necessary because it is DYNAMIC. You likely just need to increase the gain on the interface. Here's a walkthrough on how to do that: th-cam.com/video/1l86SOlxyps/w-d-xo.html
I can see recording an acoustic guitar with a mic, but wouldn't you want to record an electric with a line in? Can you do a video recording a guitar both ways at the same time; and then talk about the effects different types of mics add? Recording both ways at the same time removes the variables of how you play the piece each time.
Hey there! Thanks for these videos. If you had a choice between spending 500$ on renting 3 RE20s or using 3 "free" BCM705s for a radio-theatre drama, what would you chose? I prefer the sound of the RE20s but I'm having a hard time coming up with arguments other than "I subjectively think the RE20s sound better" to the production in order to justify my 500$ choice. Your thoughts? P.S. I watched both of your reviews and they were helpful.
Hey man, just subscribed and dropped in to say hello and please keep up the great content. Think you may have found a your hit in this one...lovely chorus :)
So isn't the frequency response chart showing 2 different frequency responses, 1 for near field and one for far field or? Or am I totally understanding it wrong?
That's exactly right. Far field, I would expect to be 1 meter away. Near field as you can see is 5cm away. You only see a change in the low end due to the proximity effect.
Great video as always, thanks. It sure looks to be a very solid microphone but I thought the plosives were a bit disappointing, especially when you consider the price tag.
It sounds not good. Not only that, but it picks up all kinds of secundairy %(#*. It sounds like it needs a second shock mount and different recording levels.
I don't remember model numbers, but we used lots of Neumann back in the 80's mainly for metal music voice, where singers tend to scream a lot, the several Neumann we had in the studio, had a power supply. for 16 mics, the size of microwave and hefty cables to the focusrite pre-amps and down to the console. Awesome days :)

Tim, wish you born a girl... lol cover that song next time LOLOL
I was about to say that's a weird looking podmic
Compared to the Podmic, or the PRocaster or even the SM7B, Is it worth the extra CASH for this mic? I would love to see a comparison.
I came here to check it out at 0:45 :D
okay, let's continue.. 😎
That song was really great. I DEMAND full song!
I agree. Love the mic videos. But you should release some songs :)
Really liked the tune
Very underrated songwriter.

It now appears to be the standard mic at Spotify's in-house studios. Sounds rather great.

Finally back!

I wouldn't say it's best sounding microphone i've ever heard, but oh my gosh what a smooth sound.
This guy got an immediate upvote for the guitar playing. You rock.
I love the BCM 705. That was my first Neumann until I upgraded to a TLM 103. Perfect for streaming and vocals
The bcm 705 is better the tlm 102?

U could use different preamp interfaces just to see if mic coloration changes n on dynamic mic use cloudlifter with n without.
wouldn't you put together a top 10 microphone for voice over, then only the 10 microphones that you think are the best choice for voice overs
