Why teach? I took my wife and put her in the excavator and said here ya go. It was a big field and nothing she could hurt. Only thing I showed her was how to shut off if something wild happened. 10 min later she was doing great. 15 more minutes she thought she was a pro. The next day I woke up she wasn’t in bed. I hear something running outside. I look out window and no joke she dug out a swimming pool. This didn’t go as planned ( as some think is a joke. It wasn’t. Her grade wasn’t perfect. But over the years I said it’s a pain to dig it out. I just don’t wanna work and day then come home and work. It was a fluke I had brought the excavator home that weekend to clean up and bring to a new job Monday. I’m still at a loss how she got it off trailer but however she did it) I admit since then I have learned one thing. Woman keep machines/inside much more clean then men.

This reminds me of the very first time I ran an excavator. I work for my dad, so one day he literally brought out our excavator to an empty field and gave me the keys. All he said is "Have fun and it's time to learn new things". When I first started I was so slow, was literally thinking every step to do through my head before doing it, and was taking the smallest scoops of dirt ever. And even now after 3-4 years of running our excavator, looking back I have improved dramatically. But I am still learning and improving on getting more efficient with running the excavator. But if you get anything out of this is that, don't stop trying or working towards something because it's difficult. Think of it as every day you are jumping over new boundaries to improve and one day you will be running the equipment like a pro.

I used to haul equipment for a rental company. My wife would love it when I'd bring machines home, for the weekend. Mini excavators were her favorite yard toys.

Ok, I'm a girl. I bought my own skid steer and taught myself how to operate it. I love it. Since buying it, men have seen me and put me on other equipment, similar to your cat size ect. he put me in his case on the river bank reaching up the hill about 70' pulling it down to make a road. Butt puckering but I gave it a shot. So what I have to say to you girl u'll get the bug and he won't b able to get u out of it.
Running most of these big machines is not really all that hard. Most of the [main] controls are very straight forward and could be safely and effectivly handled by any reasonably intelligent and responsible teenager (do those even exist any more?). The hard part, again for most of these machines, is not the controls themselves but developing the mind-eye-hand coordination that makes the machine almost literally just an extension of your mind and body. This is not a requirement for operating said machines, but the more you can integrate the controls into your subconcious, the better you can operate the machine. For some people, as myself, this is a natural talent, for others, it's near impossible.
Cool. Like the way you gave her a chance to get used to the controls at her own pace. She was so game! I wonder though, if after she got an idea of the joysticks, what she could have done if you gave her some pointers on the best way to get a full bucket. She did great. #girlpower

I'm 5 ft 2 in and I'm to short to drive a big machine but give me a mini-ex just get out the way. I wondered it she had ever driven a lawnmower or a farm tractor? You would have to run one of those things a good 80 hours to get the hang of it.
