    Would love to see more paving work. Love how you took the video and the quality of the shots of the "PAVING" job was great.
    It also was great to see Dale the owner of WCI since I've seen his trucks roll in your yard for loam.
    Keep up the great work and less videos per week are better since they are more quality enriched!!!

      My old company use to do it every once in awhile. I don’t see how it would hurt it any worse than putting binder through it.

    • @danagrey3534
      @danagrey3534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The company I used to work for, we used to do it with an old paver for base and finish grade stone... which we call 304 and 411 limestone here in Ohio. But we wouldn't do it with the same paver for paving a drive for fear of stone getting caught somewhere and ending up in the mat to dig out, fill in and rake leaving a seedy spot. Doing it the way they do it, isn't much worse than running asphalt through it, but definitely want a clean hot screed to start so I wouldn't recommend it.

Yet, I give him a ton of credit as when I comment on his videos, I always give him good sound advice which he has pinned or highlighted a lot of them. He also normally responds to my comments. But that boy can fix anything! I did a lot of my own repairs until I was able to hire a mechanic. That is where he had me. Andrew does pretty damn good work and not afraid to try or test new things! • @danagrey3534
      @danagrey3534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have that here too in the State Nic. There is a big group of gypsies or what is known as the "travelers" based out of the Carolinas and super easy to spot! They have super fancy nice trucks, small paver like a Leeboy 8500, nice trailer and rollers. But yeah they rip people off all of the time and homeowners don't know any better! Like they tell them they are going to lay an inch and a half "loose" and then when compacted, they end up with an inch and a quarter, which like you said, in a few months it is breaking up or by next spring at the lastest.

    • @dztrbdgod
      @dztrbdgod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why?

    • @velvetjones
      @velvetjones 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@dztrbdgod asphalt is going to crack no matter what. However you can minimize it and make it last a lot longer by starting with a good base. If you want it to last as long as possible 18 to 24 inches and it needs to be compacted. When I say compacted I mean using a heavy roller not driving small equipment over it. I don't know how deep the base is but I would guess it's maybe 6 to 10 inches at most and since it wasn't fully compacted it's going to flex and move around a lot. It will settle in spots and the freeze/thaw cycles will move the base around quite a bit. When I say settle I mean the cars parking and driving on top of it will flex the asphalt and compact the base beneath. The asphalt will spring back but the gravel under it wont. That means there is a spot for water to sit between the asphalt and gravel that will freeze and expand causing it to crack.
      If you want a driveway to last you need a really thick base that is compacted very well. If the base is compacted well enough there is nothing under the pavement to move and allow cracking. Keep in mind that you need drainage along with a solid base or you will get a lot of water that will freeze and expand, nothing in the world can protect against that.
      The asphalt also needs to be about 4 to 6 inches thick since it's not going onto an already paved surface. Asphalt has a lot less strength than concrete and can flex much more so you need to start out with a thicker layer on fresh construction like this than if it was being laid over a surface that had already been laid. If you already had a good surface there you could most likely get away with a skim layer 1 or 2 inches thick and call it a day.
      The cost of doing it right would probably be double what the customer paid for this job. That is why nobody does it because it costs a heck of a lot more to do the job right the first time and 99% of people would rather save a little money and let the next homeowner deal with it. Meanwhile they can advertise "new driveway just laid down" when they put the home on the market or if they are using it as a rental property for a while. My parents neighborhood went through a plague of this over the last 20 years. Homeowner has a terrible driveway and spends $3000 to $4000 to get it "redone" and then they sell the house. Then 2 or 3 years later it's cracked all over and hunks are falling off the sides. My parents had their driveway dug out and fresh concrete put down and it was around $20,000 but it will last another 40+ years with nearly zero maintenance. Some of their neighbors have had to have their driveways dug out and repaved after 5 years because it wasn't done right the first time.
      The autobahn in Germany has an extremely thick base layer underneath it and the concrete is several feet thick. That is why 70 years later cars are still driving over a pretty smooth surface at 100+mph. You get what you pay for and putting the time and money in on the front end saves a lot of maintenance through the years.
      This job would likely be fine for 5 to 10 years if they would have compacted the base properly before they laid down the asphalt even as thin as the asphalt was laid. As it was done I agree 100% with tripjet999 in 12 to 24 months there will be a lot of huge cracks and grass growing in them. Asphalt is fine for paving but it costs less than concrete for a reason. It needs a lot more maintenance over its lifetime or it won't last. I have no problem with them and would have an asphalt driveway myself but it would have a thick, well compacted base and a good thick layer of asphalt. By the time I have spent enough money to do it right I might as well spend a few thousand more and use concrete then I don't have to worry about maintaining the asphalt.
      If I did that job there would have been about 24 inches of base that was compacted properly and 6 inches of asphalt. You would still need to clean and seal it every few years but it would be much more resistant to cracking and should last 15 or 20 years. Asphalt is petroleum based and will break down over time no matter how well you maintain it. The important thing is starting off the life of the driveway correctly so you don't have to spend that money (and more) every year down the line trying to keep it from falling apart because you didn't want to open the wallet from the start.

    Very interesting, done paving for many years and never seen paving done this way😂😂😂... as far as nobody driving on it for 4 days, welllll that’s news to me, if you get good compaction while rolling it anyone can drive on it as long as they don’t park on it for a day or 2... good video, b

    We did it all the time with road base, we would do it much faster then the dirt division and with better results in time and quality. Water spray your paver afterwards and lube it ready for the asphalt.

    I have a contractor that has a paver that lays down the asphalt, and while the paver is sitting in my driveway waiting for the rain to stop, I notice a layer of oil in the bed of the paver where the asphalt is going to be. Is this going to create a problem for the asphalt to asphalt to adhere to itself and maintian a quality layer?

    If you have to fine grade with the paver, you need a real operator on the skid steer. I’ve been around construction and paving for many years and never seen that before. The guy in the shorts is an accident waiting to happen, that asphalt will blister skin in an instant and it sticks to skin real well. Nice finished product, gotta give them that.

    Now when said about the Cat roller having better compaction with the tires, that's not the purpose of a rubber tire or pneumatic roller, its main purpose is to squeeze the heat out of the mat, by not only the weight of it but the rubber absorbs the heat so the steel drum rollers can compact it, the asphalt has 3 temp ranges when to breakdown, compact, and finish.
