      My old company use to do it every once in awhile. I don’t see how it would hurt it any worse than putting binder through it.

    • @danagrey3534

      The company I used to work for, we used to do it with an old paver for base and finish grade stone... which we call 304 and 411 limestone here in Ohio. But we wouldn't do it with the same paver for paving a drive for fear of stone getting caught somewhere and ending up in the mat to dig out, fill in and rake leaving a seedy spot. Doing it the way they do it, isn't much worse than running asphalt through it, but definitely want a clean hot screed to start so I wouldn't recommend it.

    Trust me. As a coating plant batcher the customer will always complain if the tar/asphalt is too cold.
    They NEVER complain if it keeps their toes toasty.

    It also was great to see Dale the owner of WCI since I've seen his trucks roll in your yard for loam.
    Keep up the great work and less videos per week are better since they are more quality enriched!!!

    Watching the transformation of a worn-out driveway into a sleek surface is so satisfying. The attention to detail and precision are commendable.
    The visuals are captivating, and the narration explains each step of the process, making it informative and engaging.

    Now when said about the Cat roller having better compaction with the tires, that's not the purpose of a rubber tire or pneumatic roller, its main purpose is to squeeze the heat out of the mat, by not only the weight of it but the rubber absorbs the heat so the steel drum rollers can compact it, the asphalt has 3 temp ranges when to breakdown, compact, and finish.

    That’s a weiler paver.would have saved a lot of time and energy by putting stone in paver and then running over the stone. For those who may say it would hurt the paver it doesn’t. Asphalt is made out of stone .Looks like a nice job👍Nice equipment but I wouldn’t bother with the roller with tires on it.

    • @danagrey3534
      @danagrey3534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have that here too in the State Nic. There is a big group of gypsies or what is known as the "travelers" based out of the Carolinas and super easy to spot! They have super fancy nice trucks, small paver like a Leeboy 8500, nice trailer and rollers. But yeah they rip people off all of the time and homeowners don't know any better! Like they tell them they are going to lay an inch and a half "loose" and then when compacted, they end up with an inch and a quarter, which like you said, in a few months it is breaking up or by next spring at the lastest.

    If you have to fine grade with the paver, you need a real operator on the skid steer. I’ve been around construction and paving for many years and never seen that before. The guy in the shorts is an accident waiting to happen, that asphalt will blister skin in an instant and it sticks to skin real well. Nice finished product, gotta give them that.

    I am 65 and started paving Helping My Dad in Our Family business when I was 15 earlier than that unofficially. It is hot work and hot material. Those short pants that are popular with Tweaker’s are OSHA violation’s. Those poor guys must not get paid much. One of them couldn’t afford a decent belt to hold up His pants or maybe He just has hips like Cochise. I agree with another comment that using the paver to lay base material is not the wisest thing to Do. If You don’t mind replacing expensive part’s often and contaminating the asphalt mix with residual base material and fines then Do it. The base should be dampened throughout its depth. If it is dry existing or dry imported, wetting it while working it to its finished grades and slopes will facilitate proper compaction. Over wetting can cause it to become muddy , requiring time for excess moisture to evaporate out. I like the comments from people all over the world. I am not a Jet setter. Few People in the asphalt paving business are. It is very competitive. If I went on a vacation to another Country I would enjoy watching other people do theis work or even participate. Don’t get too sensitive about My Prior Remarks either, they go with the territory when working on paving and construction Crews. In paving there are many variables and methods. Aggregates and mix designs can vary by geographical location and the geology of available materials . There are different grades of asphalt oil used in Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete. The methods and types of asphalt will differ from those used on Highway projects , commercial parking lots and secondary roads. In some area’s far from Hot Mix Plants , slow curing materials are used. They are made like regular Hot mix where the aggregates and sand are heated in a giant drum like a cement mixer with a giant torch burner roaring through its center. After the aggregates and sand are heated the oil is injected and is drawn into the mix by capillary action. The Heat keeps the material “ plastic “ and Workable. As it cools it becomes harder to work , blend ( make seamless joints ), roll and compact properly. There are emulsifiers in the oil that help with the heat in keeping it workable for a a few Hours on warm days . Cooler temperatures means transporting , laying and finishing ( shaping and compaction) more quickly. Hotter days are more forgiving and l am writing a book. The Asphalt Institute is a good source and reference for anyone in the trade . There is no substitute for experience.Even those with Engineering Degrees can and should learn from the old timer common laborer’s who have spent their lives doing this work. Even among competitors we have shop talk and attend seminars. I am not a Cat Salesman but swear by the brand , I have used and own many other brands and if You know what Your doing You can make anything work. I worked with a old guy who had graded roads using a mule drawn grader that was operated by turning large metal wheels that turned gears that raised and lowered the cutting edge and adjusted the pitch while He shouted Gee , Ho and Yeah to the team.

    Next year's video: "Repairing the cracks in the driveway."

    • @dztrbdgod
      @dztrbdgod 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why?

    • @velvetjones
      @velvetjones 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@dztrbdgod asphalt is going to crack no matter what. However you can minimize it and make it last a lot longer by starting with a good base. If you want it to last as long as possible 18 to 24 inches and it needs to be compacted. When I say compacted I mean using a heavy roller not driving small equipment over it. I don't know how deep the base is but I would guess it's maybe 6 to 10 inches at most and since it wasn't fully compacted it's going to flex and move around a lot. It will settle in spots and the freeze/thaw cycles will move the base around quite a bit. When I say settle I mean the cars parking and driving on top of it will flex the asphalt and compact the base beneath. The asphalt will spring back but the gravel under it wont. That means there is a spot for water to sit between the asphalt and gravel that will freeze and expand causing it to crack.
      If you want a driveway to last you need a really thick base that is compacted very well. If the base is compacted well enough there is nothing under the pavement to move and allow cracking. Keep in mind that you need drainage along with a solid base or you will get a lot of water that will freeze and expand, nothing in the world can protect against that.
      The asphalt also needs to be about 4 to 6 inches thick since it's not going onto an already paved surface. Asphalt has a lot less strength than concrete and can flex much more so you need to start out with a thicker layer on fresh construction like this than if it was being laid over a surface that had already been laid. If you already had a good surface there you could most likely get away with a skim layer 1 or 2 inches thick and call it a day.
      The cost of doing it right would probably be double what the customer paid for this job. That is why nobody does it because it costs a heck of a lot more to do the job right the first time and 99% of people would rather save a little money and let the next homeowner deal with it. Meanwhile they can advertise "new driveway just laid down" when they put the home on the market or if they are using it as a rental property for a while. My parents neighborhood went through a plague of this over the last 20 years. Homeowner has a terrible driveway and spends $3000 to $4000 to get it "redone" and then they sell the house. Then 2 or 3 years later it's cracked all over and hunks are falling off the sides. My parents had their driveway dug out and fresh concrete put down and it was around $20,000 but it will last another 40+ years with nearly zero maintenance. Some of their neighbors have had to have their driveways dug out and repaved after 5 years because it wasn't done right the first time.
      The autobahn in Germany has an extremely thick base layer underneath it and the concrete is several feet thick. That is why 70 years later cars are still driving over a pretty smooth surface at 100+mph. You get what you pay for and putting the time and money in on the front end saves a lot of maintenance through the years.
      This job would likely be fine for 5 to 10 years if they would have compacted the base properly before they laid down the asphalt even as thin as the asphalt was laid. As it was done I agree 100% with tripjet999 in 12 to 24 months there will be a lot of huge cracks and grass growing in them. Asphalt is fine for paving but it costs less than concrete for a reason. It needs a lot more maintenance over its lifetime or it won't last. I have no problem with them and would have an asphalt driveway myself but it would have a thick, well compacted base and a good thick layer of asphalt. By the time I have spent enough money to do it right I might as well spend a few thousand more and use concrete then I don't have to worry about maintaining the asphalt.
      If I did that job there would have been about 24 inches of base that was compacted properly and 6 inches of asphalt. You would still need to clean and seal it every few years but it would be much more resistant to cracking and should last 15 or 20 years. Asphalt is petroleum based and will break down over time no matter how well you maintain it. The important thing is starting off the life of the driveway correctly so you don't have to spend that money (and more) every year down the line trying to keep it from falling apart because you didn't want to open the wallet from the start.

    Combo rollers are finish rollers steel drum for breakdown but who cares 😂 looks great

    • @DeterminedBeast
      @DeterminedBeast 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The last place a combi roller should be used is finish. Breakdown and before finish is good but not for finish, the double steel takes out all lines left from rubber tire rollers and makes a uniform finish. Combi can be used as finish aslong as it's not leaving tire impressions.

    • @paveemall1387
      @paveemall1387 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Byrne no pal you hit with steel then you combi then you steel the last place a combi gose is on breakdown you destroy the mat hitting it with a combi for breakdown watch every highway contractor combi rollers made the job lazy combi dose not break down the tires cut the piss out of it you want the tires to bring the shine out on a finished mat by that time there should be no tire cuts and the front steel takes the small impression from the tire out that’s why it’s a combi roller or it would be steel all rubber and a smaller steel following facts not my own bull shit

    • @dweebsmasher
      @dweebsmasher 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@paveemall1387 on bigger jobs combi isnt even used its double steel breakdown rubber tire to follow and double steel on finish. the only time a combi ive seen used where im from is on small patches or for breakdown on smaller jobs or in tight areas, then hit with rubber followed by double steel. only time ive seen a combi on a highway job in my life, its being used strictly for approaches. honestly on anything small if your rollerman is leaving tire marks while using a combi he doesnt know what hes doing or is lazy and not hitting it enough/properly.

    We don't do driveways like that here we use a 3/4" stone binder coat then use a fine coat on top that would be considered a driveway that will not last here , they did a nice job but should of did two coarses .

    6/10 many reasons...1 dragging the (screed) bottom of the paver on gravel is not good, quick wear down and eventually bad smooth pulls in the future and money to fix! 2. Combo roller on driveway lol first time I have ever seen that but not horrible! 3. The joint or seam(driveway and road meet) whichever you prefer to call it is not very straight and clean but overall ok could have been leuted better! But overall I have definitely seen worse!

    I own a concrete business and we always tell customers that have us tear out their asphalt driveway "you used asphalt, it's your fault". There's no way I would be able to sleep at night taking people's money and giving them a product such as asphalt. It's junk. We tear out roughly 20 asphalt driveways a year that are fairly new. And %100 of the time the customers say they wish they would have just had a concrete driveway in the first place. On the other hand, yall keep on keeping on, bc I make $$$ off tearing this s**t out lol. Thanks
