Hi Guys!!!
This video introduces the process of making a Eco-Friendly Plate.
▶Craftsman Profile
Tsutomu Matsuda / Matsuda Lacquer Studio
He has been engaged in lacquering Buddhist altars and ritual articles for more than 50 years in Kyoto. He sublimates the techniques and experience he has cultivated over the past 50 years into accessories that glamorously adorn the body and soul of people. He produces genuine handmade crafts that stubbornly stick to handcrafting.
▶Craftsman Passion
"Repainting traditional art into modern art"
With the demand for lacquer decreasing rapidly, we want to convey the beauty of lacquer to a wider variety of people. With this in mind, we have incorporated the traditional techniques we have cultivated over the years into accessories to make lacquer more accessible to people.
▶Achievement
Designated as a traditional craftsman in 2014
Received award for Master Craftsman of Kyoto
Received award for the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver and Silver Rays
He has received many other awards for their work.

Bravo to the master
Thank you so much!!!!
I'm not throwing my keys onto a $400 plate! Again this is a precious work of art and needs the respect art deserves. Maybe some wrapped candies, but nothing wet, scratchy or harmful. I was fascinated by the multiple layers on the beetle. To get that under glow from the gold dust was ingenious. Thank you for sharing this video.
Thank you so much for your comment!!!
Absolutely breath-taking. Such a simple thing, I thought, when I first started watching. But the care and the skill, and the end result of the iridescent beetle - absolutely breath-taking. (I must admit, I panicked a bit when he laquered over the gold dust layer! How clever!)
Thank you! Dust is the biggest enemy of lacquer. Therefore, there is a constant tension in the workshop to always take the utmost care. We want this wonderful technique to reach more people all over the world.
@@Craftsmanship-Process you reached me in England, that's for certain. I'm amazed at the skill and beauty. Thank you so much. ❤️

It is Beautiful Brother 👍🏻
Thank you so much!!!!
Japonaise art is very elegant
Thank you so much!!!
Beautiful. As this “dish” ages and is wiped and cleaned more and more colour will appear on the beetle. An elderly friend (many years ago) who had lived most of her life in China had a beautiful, very old, black lacquer cabinet that had a beautiful pattern that only emerged from the lacquer with age. Such a different philosophy to our IKEA world.
Thank you for the comment 🙏
Beautiful
Thank you !!!!
Gold powder, gold dust, fancy! I’m amazed by his steady hand doing the beetle. My hand would be shaking and the lines would have little bumps.
Thank you for your comment! It really takes time to learn the finer techniques.
@@Craftsmanship-Process you’re welcome. Takes a lot of patience to learn the finer techniques. I’ll need a few more years of practice.

Too beautiful to eat off that plate.
Thank you so much for your comment!!!
I am so interested in Japanese craft and culture shows. Woodworking, reuse of old objects, gardening - bring it on!! The other channel often posting on You Tube...NHK does not allow comments. Also not everything is subtitled. So, your series of delightful shows was a breath of fresh air to chance upon. Thank you, and cheers from this textile artist in New Orleans.
Thank you for your comment! Y glad you enjoyed this video!
That’s one gorgeous beetle!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow... I'd love an object of such beauty but I'd be scared to damage it so it would end up being an ornament! ❤
Thank you so much!!!!
💓💓💓💓💓💓
If people would just read, it explains that the piece is made of materials that would otherwise be discarded.
Materials that would normally be discarded are upcycled and sublimated into wonderful products! This is the spirit of Mottainai in Japan.
The whole thing is beautiful. I’d put some wrapped candies on it but not covering the beetle. Well done, Mr. Matsuda!
Thank you!!!
@@Craftsmanship-Process you’re welcome.

But where the gold powder went did not appear in the final product
11:07 Thank you so much for your comment!! The gold dust is under the lacquer and appears to shimmer slightly at different angles. It has a beauty that is not too assertive.
@@Craftsmanship-Process Thank you for your response. Your work was perfect and beautiful. I eagerly waited for its end. It was a real masterpiece. I am following you from Syria.

Did I read that right on your website that 10% or less goes to the crafter/artist?
We give back more to our craftsmen than the usual intermediary businesses. You can be sure of it.
Beautiful, beautiful work and a great video. Please be aware that words like "sustainable" and "eco-friendly" are meaningless marketing words that mostly used to steal money from people.
Thank you so much!!!1

Personally i find the plate beautiful but is it just me, i think that beetle ornament should have not been covered in black. Of course the craftsman has the power to change his design but i liked it when it was golden color.
Certainly there is such an opinion. A subtle beauty can be expressed by applying black lacquer over the top and blurring the gold! We will tell the craftsman that we prefer gold! Thank you for your comment❤
You should have shown how the plate is actually used so it can be more appealing as a utility rather than just a simple decor.
11:38~
You can see an example of its use here!
You need to know how a Plate is used? You put food on it and then eat the food……duh 😆😆😆
🙏SUPERBE🙏
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I dont think he pretend to bring this for the masses LOL
😀😀😀😀😀😀
Is it dishwasher-safe?
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can anyone enlightening me how is 400$ + plate made from tree bark so "Eco-Friendly"??? I'm a a family of 5, so one set will over 2K $ ?!!!
Ok it’s not a plate anymore it’s a decoration useless to me 😊 yes he has great skill 😊
Eco-friendly doesn’t mean affordable.
It will last generations
You have a family of 5 and you’re not smart enough to realize that “eco friendly” and “affordable” are not mutually exclusive…. fix it Lord
If you’re a cheapo like me and still want to be eco friendly, buy things at thrift stores instead of buying things brand new
"Eco-friendly" if you got monies to burn.
❤❤❤
