  • On October 29th, 2022, we headed out to the Reading and Northern Railroad to chase the Reading and Northern 4-8-4 class T-1 2102. The big Northern ran it's third Fall Foliage steam excursion from Reading to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and back, with a jaw-dropping performance. The intense smoke, the deafening stack talk, and the ground-shaking wheelslip, all while surrounded by beautiful fall colors and a clear blue sky made this my favorite and most fun railroad experience I've ever had.
On this day, 2102 was prone to violent wheelslips on the uphill grades. This was due to a buildup of leaf residue in shady areas of track where the sunlight couldn't make the rails dry and thus, the engine would often times lose grip of the rail. It got so bad that the train nearly stalled at East Mahoney Junction, slowing to almost 2 miles an hour due to the residue and the 1.9% grade and sharp curvature. After the booster kicked in, 2102 persevered with even more steam and power, and could be heard for miles.
Through the process of careful planning, we were able to catch the locomotive more than a dozen times. The timestamps for each shot are below...
    0:00 Reading Outer Station
    0:10 Leesport
    1:24 Port Clinton
    3:23 Reynolds
4:15 East Mahoney Junction. (Nearly Stalls)
    6:46 Lake Hauto
    7:31 Jim Thorpe
    7:56 Jim Thorpe Wye
    10:50 RDCs
    11:22 Nesquehoning Tunnel
    13:25 Marian Avenue
    14:26 Zehners
    15:32 Molino
    16:31 Hamburg
    17:24 Reading Outer Station
This trip was filmed with two cameras. This was the first one, and the next one features the same shots done on a Sony FDR-AX33, and I couldn't be happier with how it performs. That footage will be released very soon, so be sure to subscribe for future updates and videos! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy!

I had been waiting to see what happened at East Mahanoy Junction from the ground. I had the perspective from on the train and it was a show!

Why can’t there be future Reading-Pittston and Scranton-Delaware Water Gap excursions for 2102 one day? What if it does happen? What if 2102 reunites with 2100 and 2124? That would be awesome!

Scranton to Delaware Water Gap will never happen as 2102 is never leaving RBMN rails. Reading to Pittston is rather likely for Rambles trips at some point, especially when they get the Pittston station built. It will almost certainly feature on the Mountain Top trip next summer with 425 out of commission. Reuniting with 2124 will never happen. Reuniting with 2100 is up to Andy, SRI and Norfolk Southern. And 2100 is still a ways out from being operational.

@@JBS319 From what I've been hearing that the R&N is planning to build a new station in Pittston, I don't know what will it look like and be like, but that surely will be awesome!

@@brianfalzon6739 it will probably be much like Reading Outer: a parking lot, a platform, a ticket office, and maybe some restrooms. Not expecting a Port Clinton or a Jim Thorpe.
