Reading 2102: Rambling Amid the Fading Fall Foliage

  • Throughout much of 2022, the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad operated their recently-restored Reading T-1 number 2102 on multiple all-day excursions between Reading Outer Station and Jim Thorpe. These iconic trips always provide photogenic locations to capture the locomotive working hard up steep mountain grades.
After suffering a mechanical problem on one of its Fall Foliage Excursions on October 8, the railroad decided to run 2102 on their final steam-powered excursion to Jim Thorpe. With the clocks falling back the prior night, the early evening darkness allowed for some unique lighting on the return trip to Reading. Due to the logistics involved in operating one of these all-day excursions, the 2102 was cut off the train at Port Clinton on its return to Reading just as the darkness of the night settled in.
All good things must come to an end, so sit back, relax, and enjoy seeing Reading 2102 on its last excursion of its first season back in service after a 6-year restoration.
These scenes and more will be featured in a longer, more comprehensive video documenting Reading 2102's return.
This video was filmed on Sunday, November 6, 2022.

9:37 I don't think I've ever seen a steam locomotive's headlight that bright before, amazing!

That makes two of us! The thick fog and darkness of the afternoon really accentuated its brightness

Absolutely. The Reading & Northern runs steam how they were built to run.

Great video, audio was fantastic and sounds like she was putting on a show. However at the Nesquehoning Tunnel I was convinced I saw the light . Great work with that light tho

I feel for ya, that was some TOUGH weather to shoot in. God what a ride that was!

It was definitely tricky conditions with a dark sky, fog, and the change of time so it was even darker than normal, but it allowed for some unique shots! And yes, I can only imagine how good the ride was
