Great interview! I’ve been wanting to see Journey live in concert since I was 8. 48 years later I’m finally going to see them perform. July 27th. Neal Schon is the reason I began playing guitar. One day I pray to get to meet him. Gonna be an amazing show. Thank you for posting this interview.
I saw Journey at the Cow Palace in San Francisco(actually in Daly CIty) in December 1981 on the Escape tour. They put on a great concert and during the middle of it they brought out a few S.F. Forty Niners who finally made the play-offs after many losing seasons. Lots of great memories growing up in the 70s and 80s in the City by the Bay.
Yes…Neal’s solo work and his other projects outside of Journey are great too! HSAS was amazing and his guitar playing on Gregg Rolie’s album Gringo was outstanding! Thanks Neal for all of it.
The line about the midnight train came from Steve's childhood in Hanford. He said as a kid he heard a train come through every night at midnight. It wasn't something NS invented.
I think you need to re-listen to what Neal was describing. His guitar after the first verse SOUNDED like a train to Steve and Jon, so it inspired them to include a train in the lyrics.
Neil Schon, you are as nice and down to earth just like Steve Perry! You two are very handsome, and I love the way you play your guitar! Journey A Real Great Band! All The Best To You Alway Too!❤

As a drummer, I still play 'Don't Stop Believin'' on occasion and the drumming remains so challenging, unusual and fun to play all of these years later. Steve Smith is so underrated with regards to his (& Ross') contributions to the band - with no disrespect to Aynsley or Deen. I find though that as long as I don't think too much about what I'm playing with this song, I'm fine. When I start to think about the mechanics of what I'm playing, I screw it up.
I don't think people that aren't musically inclined realize that each artist had their own thing going in this song and we're talking about people at the top of their field I agree with you wholeheartedly
He’s my absolute guitar idol and the reason I started playing. Thrilled to see one of his solo records behind him. His solo stuff is underrated. I still listen to his first one: “Late Nite”. Some incredible stuff. My dream would be to have dinner with him or something like that. In interviews he always has great stories. He knows and has worked with so many artists. Great artists. He should write a book about his musical career.
