- Founding member, guitarist, songwriter and producer Neal Schon of the band Journey is our guest this week on Border Crossings. Journey has released their first studio album of all news songs in over a decade “Freedom.” Next year, the band will be celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band.

The story of Journey from 1978 to 1997 has so many beautiful pieces, the work they accomplished, and the physical closeness of the band as they toured relentlessly and practically slept together while on the road, and the picures and videos and inteviews...and then the loss of passion for the raised on radio tour, and eventually the heart wrenching ending to Perry's part of the story... the loss of brotherhood. Frustration and crushed dreams. Sounds like it would make one hell of a movie...but we would need that happy ending... Reunion. If only for a moment. The curtain can fall.
Been inspired by Neal since I was 14. Brilliant player.

Amazing interview with Neil Schon especially talks about how he found Arnel Pineda, Schon has a talent to find a singer and a vision.
Carlos Santana showed how he recognised musical talent whatever the age of the person. He took Neal under his wing without being afraid of being upstaged by a 16 year old. Great to see Neal has maintained his love for the guitar which is shown by the number of videos he puts up on social media sites like Facebook.

It’s true about a lot of guitarists not admitting to being VERY influenced by Schon. Probably because they’d be ashamed to admit that a kid younger than they would be a kick-ass, better guitarist. 😂 I KNOW Prince heavily stole from Schon yet many think that he (Prince) was a “great guitarist.”
Schon was a prodigy and was doing things few, if any guitarists at that time were doing. I consider him a MAJOR inspiration and influence and it was interesting to hear him explain his wah pedal technique by using the frequency sweep for dynamics and tone instead of the usual “Shaft Theme” style. One of my favorite things about him is how he keenly builds up tension while utilizing melodic phrasing when soloing, something I’m sure he learned from copying Aretha Franklin’s vocal stylings.
And while I lament the inclusion of a “pretty boy” lead vocalist and departure from their ProgRock/Jammers beginnings, I also knew that the cats had to eat, so I was happy for their huge deserved success. At least they had the players to deliver the killer chops when needed-yet also knew what their larger fan base wanted.

He's a good guy which you can hear when he talks. Perhaps try to look beyond appearances. He may have had some plastic surgery but that's up to him.
I know Neal screwed his face up, man. I don't know why he did that.
