Norwegian guitarist Berit Hagen is truly my Commander-in-Chief! She is an incredible virtuosa electric metal-classical guitarist! I am so amazed and humbled by her incredible playing ability.

I like the atmosphere of the 50s / 60s movies in this video. Something between Hitchcock and the first James Bond films. Craig could be a James Bond on a guitar and Berit looks great in his dress. She plays better than many "untouchable" players out there. Many people would not understand how difficult it is to play such an advanced tune on a clean style guitar sound. I can watch this video many times without getting bored. Congratulations for the fine good job.

As the manager for "The Commander In Chief" I have quietly observed the lovers and haters comment on this video for 5 years, despite the fact that I am the one making her videos. I will now set the record straight about certain "issues" that I am tired of seeing popping up, in comments by self proclaimed "experts" and others. Btw, my musical background is from classical music and I have been her manager from day 1. I was there for every minute of the recording sessions, the rehearsals and the long hours studying the classical pieces. I have documented pretty much everything she has ever done, musically.
I will address these issues here:
    1) if she knows the piece, or as some people have claimed "she didn't properly learn it" OR - an even better claim from some - "she is a sloppy guitar player"
    2) the sound of the electric guitar on the recording
    3) why the uniform and airplane
    1) Does she know the piece? We decided to record a full classical crossover album after her tremendous success with the 1st in the world guitar recording of Sarasate's masterpiece for violin; "Zigeunerweisen Op.20," in 2013. The viral video is here on her channel. When deciding the pieces for the album, we knew we had to include Paganini, since so many people seem to think nothing can be more difficult to play. She deliberately chose the most challenging of his Caprices, seeing right away it was difficult, but nowhere near as difficult as "Zigeunerweisen" had been.
Keep in mind that she DID NOT know how to read sheet music, while learning these classical pieces, so she memorised each note. I will repeat that; she memorised each and every note. A fact that stunned classical guitarist Craig Ogden, who has praised her prolific and prodigious memory, repeatedly. It was a huge job to map out and memorise each of these massive pieces, that took months and she did not only memorise them, she studied each note carefully, to decide how it would be best to play them. It was a massive job to find out where (and how) everything could be ideally played on the electric guitar - and HOW it should or could be done, properly. Together we studied a lot of violin versions of all the pieces we had chosen, and she quickly decided that her favourite version of this piece was the Heifetz version, which some of you so correctly have commented on. She even named her electric guitar "Heifetz" after studying these pieces.
She wanted to be as true as possible to the violin sound and she experimented with a lot of different ways to play each and every note, in each and every part of the piece, to reach that goal, knowing full well that it would never sound like a violin, because of how it HAD to be played, to get the best result. Playing it with anything but a clean sound would be a travesty, since distortion while playing such pieces of music only serves one purpose: covering up string noise and imperfections in technique. Keep in mind also that on classical guitar you use all fingers and nails to pick with, but on electric you only have one guitar pick, which makes it much more difficult to play. By the time we went to record the music, after 6 months of intense preparations - each note, and how to perform it, was so well trained and programmed into her fingers and brain that she could play it in her sleep. That is why she could play it in the music video and walk around, having fun, while Craig, who relies on reading sheet music, did not have the same artistic freedom during the video shoots, since he was reading the music all the time. In the end, I think we manage to capture some great footage, that shows the great musical chemistry between these two world class players. It was fascinating to observe both artists in the recording studio, coming from such different musical backgrounds, having such different approaches and preparations, speaking two completely different musical languages; Craig being the classical scholar, reading music, knowing all the correct names for everything, while "The Chief" knew none of the correct classical terms and expressions, having memorised every note on the album, and figured out her way of playing each piece, based on what she heard coming out of the guitar. It was truly one for the history books. Many of the pieces of the album were recorded live, with both of them playing together. It was a truly magical experience to witness it all and we all had lots of fun.
Although this piece is very challenging to play, it is "nothing" compared to the really big one: their 1st ever guitar recording of "Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso" which is also on the same album, and the video is here on her channel. The 10 minutes pieces has everything, when it comes to challenges and if you have not seen it, I strongly recommend doing it. It is lovely and impressive! I am posting a link with 1 minute from the OUTRO here in this comment, since that is the part that was so challenging that she did not even know if she would be able to do it properly, to her extremely high standards, and with the speed she wanted to do it, just a week before we traveled to the studio. However, she managed to do that as well. I never doubted she would.
Based solely on her international success in Heavy Metal, when she was praised as "1 of 10 guitar gods" by leading magazine, Metal Hammer, UK, and the legendary Pantera producer Sterling Winfield, (Pantera, BBKing) who worked with Pantera for 10 years, said: "In my 20+ years as a producer and engineer I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like she has to offer," I find it abhorrent that anyone would even suggest that she is a "sloppy guitarist," or that she does not know this, or any other song she has recorded. Anyone saying such things after listening to her classical recordings clearly is delusional. May I suggest that those stating such things posts videos of themselves playing this the way THEY think it should be played? It is only fair that the world gets to see these geniuses perform this "as it should be done," so feel free to post videos of yourself right here, in the comment section.
    2) The sound of the electric guitar. We had some pretty intense discussions in the studio about this. On "Zigeunerweisen" and "Introduction & Rondo" the sound is soft and beautiful - it rings out - and I was concerned about how dry the sound was on this particular piece, since it was possible some people would be distracted by that. The Chief explained very clearly to me how she muted the strings on purpose, since she felt very strongly it was the only good way to play those parts in a clean way. I let her have the final saying on that one. If you listen to the two other big pieces on the album you will hear the difference in tone, since they were not muted to the same extent. So the sound is the result of a deliberate way to play it by the person who knows this pieces the best, when it comes to playing it on electric guitar.
    3) The uniform and the plane. There has been a few comments about this, so I will briefly comment on it. The Chief grew up with a pilot dad, who had been a fighter pilot before she was born. During her childhood she was surrounded by ex-military pilots, so it was not strange that she was drawn to a military look, when she started designing her own stage uniforms. Having a dad whose hobby is flying aerobatics, spending lots of times at small airfields, in hangars, etc throughout here life, it was something very familiar for her about shooting this video where we did. It is not her dad in the video, it is a friend of the family.
Here is a short video from the OUTRO of "Introduction & Rondo." I have just started my own TH-cam channel, where I will post videos of "The Chief" and I talking about various aspects of what we do, how we work, etc. I will post behind the scenes footage from our musical journey and I will post videos that has nothing to do with music, relating to my own colourful life. This short video clip, 1 minute, is the most hellishly difficult thing "The Chief" has ever played. She tasked me with finding pieces for the album. Her brother and I felt it was almost too brutal to suggest "Introduction," after listing to several pieces that had never been done by guitarists before. We debated for some days, while she was consumed with memorising the Paganini piece. In the end we agreed to present the piece to her, and she took the challenge and delivered superbly. Enjoy! Please watch the full video here on her channel. It deserves way more attention. th-cam.com/video/fgcA2lW1WQE/w-d-xo.html

It's sad that you've had to make a comment like this. I think the classical team are seeing an electric guitar and going "nonono" whilst the non-classical are getting whiny cause it's not like their usual stuff.
It was a joy to listen to. I'm glad she didn't use reverb or distortion, as that wouldn't do the piece justice - it's all very clever and precise string work that adding extra noise would just kill it.

The electric and classic guitar styles are very different approaches. With metal you can shred and play really fast, but classical style has the advantage with chords and polyphony because it's like 4 picks (with no up stroke) in the right hand. This is a great arrangement and excellent performance putting the different styles side to side!!!

Love the contrast between the CIC and Craig's playing and instrument sound, it's refreshing to see musicians adapting and blending different musical genres.
Both outstanding musicians, it's a joy to watch and listen to, thanks 🎸🎶🎵

This is so much fun. The level of musicianship and talent and humor reminds me of Les Paul and Mary Ford (except in this case the commander is not secondary). There are so many examples of the Caprice 24 on the internet from purely straight versions by just about every notable violinist to Twoset and Hilary Hahn trading licks while hula hooping and Charles Berthoud's pretty impressive performance on electric bass to Marcin's kind of shocking knock-your-socks-off Paganini meets Tarrega version. While Heifetz or Hahn playing the original is literally breathtaking, I love and deeply admire all the amazing musicians who can take this wonderful virtuoso piece and play with it to show their magnificent, supernatural skills. Bravo and I truly believe that Paganini would have loved it as well.
