I have a hypothesis that Sabrina and Koga were originally swapped in being Psychic and Poison gym leaders. Think about it. Koga's gym is full of jugglers using Psychic types, while Sabrina's has several Chanelers. While chaneler is usually associated with Ghost types, remember that the only Ghost in Kanto is also a Poison type. Koga's gym puzzle is a series of invisible walls, which is the gimmick of Mr. Mime and its Barrier move, both Psychic type. Lastly, look at the badge names. Koga gives the Soul Badge while Sabrina gives the Marsh Badge. The Soul is commonly associated with human psyche, while a Marsh is a poisonous swamp.
This doesn't seem to be the case. None of the leaked development material points to this ever having been the case, and the badge names are entirely different in the original RG versions (Instewd being named after the colors of the town they appear in, with the Soul Badge becoming the Pink Badge, and the Marsh Badge becoming the Gold Badge) The Pokémon being almost only Psychic types is a mystery, though most of those in the Gym learn poison-type moves. As for why they used these over other Pokémon, perhaps it was because they originally wanted pure Poison-types, and Giovanni was already associated with the Nidoran line, and they didn't want to have every trainer use Koffing, so they just ended up using tougher Psychic-type Pokémon that have poison-type moves.
I always interpreted it as since Koga was a ninja, he trained against his Pokemon's weakness, psychic, and the trainers you battle are his sparring partners. The channelers are in Sabrinas gym because psychics and channelers are both occult/ spiritual types, and since there's only one ghost Pokemon, there's not enough to put them in a gym of their own. Plus, channelers thematically don't make sense with ninjas, but do with psychics.
I think that originally Koga didn't even exist and Erika was supposed to be the Poison leader with Gengar as ace. I'm sure you've heard of the ghost theory surrounding her kimono, but that got me further thinking: she's all about perfumes, which is a gas, and the only Ghost-line is all about gas, and then there's also the Koffing and Grimer lines (including an NPC in the city who talks about Grimer), and of course her Oddish/Bellsprout lines are not just Poison but also Grass. People also sometimes joke about Tangela being a Gastly covered in vines, and well... while not intended to be that of course, maybe its design comes from that, where they decided to make Erika a Grass leader so they repurposed a Gastly design into Tangela as a nod to what she used to be. Koga also really seems like a last-minute inclusion, considering his team and gym trainers and simplistic gym layout.

Like the part where the mouse turns into a man and tries to date a human woman? Because I do, despite how often I would fall asleep to it.
I don't recall Jack-Jack ever trying to date someone. He turned into a human because he figured Cinderella had no more interest in him as a friend after becoming a Princess and having way more human company. ... Great, now the movie's going to be bouncing around in my head again.
Holy cow, for the first time ever he recognizes the existence of Scott's Thoughts! Very cool to see. I would love to see a collaboration between you two!
You know, this run had a lot in common with the plot of Cinderella 2: Dreams Come True, where Misty and Lorelei being the hardest fights represent Drizella and the Wicked Stepmother, and Agatha surprisingly being very easy represents Anastasia, the stepsister who gets a redemption arc and becomes a good person 🤔 Makes you think
I love the way Shawn edits these, and his little commentary too! 😆 The badges and the time stamp on when you got them is fantastic! I'm glad all is good with AJ. I did wonder about him, and hoped he was okay.
In my opinion Magmar is the most underrated and overlooked Pokémon ever. No one talks about him hardly. He’s always been my favorite of all time in the series and the games. Blaine don’t even have him on his team in red and blue or yellow. And he was his ace in the show. Just made no sense to me.
When Scott’s Thoughts did a Kadabra run, he had to endure the patience of an individual who does not speedrun much, and therefore struggled. Here, when JRose uses Venomoth, the Psychic-Flying Pokémon, he has to come to terms why Butterfree was abandoned long ago. Worlds collide, videos are made.
Jrose, Venomoth is incredibly good in the later games. I recently used it in a solo run of BDSP and it was absolutely stellar. It was one of the the few Pokemon that first try'd the Elite Four + Cynthia (alongside Clefable and Golduck). It entered the Hall of Fame at Lv. 71, had the Tinted Lens ability and its move set was: - Quiver Dance - Giga Drain - Bug Buzz - Roost Tinted Lens doubles the damage you do against all targets that resist your attacks, meaning you do 1x damage against a Pokemon with an ordinary resistance (instead of 0.5x) and 0.5x damage against a Pokemon with a double resistance (instead of 0.25x). This is incredibly powerful, since it drastically reduces the necessity for type diversity among your moves. There wasn't a single opponent I didn't do at least 1x damage against and combined with Quiver Dance and HP restoring moves, this made for a deadly combo. The Spiritomb Cynthia leads off with for example doesn't have a single Physical Attack. So you can just set up six Quiver Dances, heal inbetween with Roost and then proceed to sweep her entire team in one fell swoop. And on top of all that, Venomoth's poison typing makes it immune against Toxic, which is something I'm struggling with with a lot of Pokemon when facing Aaron and Bertha. Edit: I am currently on an Arcanine-only playthrough and Arcanine is struggling a lot more in the endgame. I'm currently on my third try to get through the Elite Four (at Lv. 66), after being stopped by Bertha on my first two tries, and it seems I'll still need a few more levels to beat her. Arcanine has access to Sunny Day and Solar Beam, but its real party piece is Burn Up, which gets rid of its Fire typing and thus all of its weaknesses. However Bertha's Ground/Rock type Pokemon are hitting hard regardless (and of course there's also Quagsire's Toxic 😒). So I'm going to be here for a little longer.
Definitely loved seeing how well this one did. Can't wait for the next one. I know I am still looking forward to the mid stage runs, namely the haunter, starters, and gloom just to see if it can make up for the poor oddish. Maybe even the kadabra or pidgeotto will make their appearance soon. So many videos you have completed and yet so many left to do. Thank you for all the content. Both of the past and future ones. And kudos to the editors who help behind scenes

Venomoth was one of my first Psychic backups if I didn't have Kadabra or Alakazam for this game because it had Psybeam and that was a favorite move because it looked like a Kamehameha from DBZ which was incredibly popular at the time. 😄👍
@@gmsloep oh really? I haven't played any of the Pokemon games after Yellow and I haven't watched past the first couple seasons of the show, although I have somewhat kept up on the new Pokemon through cards and videos on TH-cam. I'm guessing there was a Pokemon that actually does the motion and everything so it really looks like a DBZ fireball? 😅👍
@deathsnitemaresinfullust2269 Yep. Korrina's Machoke, in the Fighting gym. Look up "Machoke Kamehameha" and you'll find the clip, just with Goku's voice edited in.
@@gmsloep really? A Machoke? Huh, that's one of the last Pokemon I would have imagined using a move like that.🤦♂️ Whatever, I'm sure it was pretty hype for some people when it happened. 😄👍
@deathsnitemaresinfullust2269 it makes more sense once you know that 1) Focus Blast is a Fighting move introduced in Generation 4, and 2) Generation 6 was when the anime started going nuts with references to other shows. Jojo, Gundam, Dragon Ball, the references are everywhere.
Always really liked Venomoth, I've used one in my Blue team way back in the day. It's also underrated competitively thanks to Tinted Lens. Amazing vid once again dude.
Interestingly, that's not a moth. Venomoth is just the name the English translators picked. Its original Japanese name is "Morphon", and Morpho is a genus of butterfly. I read that switching Morphon and Butterfree's sprites was not a mistake, but a deliberate choice. They were planning the cartoon before they released the game, wanted Caterpie to evolve into something cute in the cartoon, and Butterfree was not cute at all. Morphon was (it looks like a winged Venonat/Konpan, given that that's exactly what it was designed to be). So they switched them around. I don't know if that's been confirmed by the developers or if that's just a fan hypothesis that grew until people thought it was correct.
That sounds quite unlikely. The game wasn't expected to be a huge hit, the anime and manga were created because of the game's success, it couldn't have been planned before the game was released. Wikipedia has an exact timeline. The anime was suggested months after the game's released, and the idea was even resisted a bit because if the anime flopped, it could affect the game sales. Butterfree seems to be inspired by Aporia crataegi... That butterfly looks like Butterfree and its larva looks like a caterpie with wrong colors.
@@Kleyguerth It's possible, but... if they came up with the anime after waiting to see if the the game was successful, they were really really quick to make it. The game came out late February 1996, the anime April 1st 1997. Assuming they decided the game was successful after just a month, immediately decided to make an anime, and somehow got all the details sorted out quickly enough to start production just two months later, that would have left them 10 months to make it before it started airing. Impressive. Pokémon's creator is a huge fan of insects, he's a real life Bug Catcher. Caterpie and Metapod are actual existing creatures (identical, with the right colors), and the butterfly that they turn into (eastern tiger swallowtail) has Venomoth's wings. Venomoth also has Caterpie's eyes (unlike Butterfree) and Metapod's head shape. And obviously "Butterfree" looks exactly like an evolved Venonat. There can be no doubt the current final forms are switched. They don't match their previous form at all, and perfectly match each other's previous forms.
@@BigSlimyBlob The switching part is possible, but "because anime" isn't. The anime idea was first brought up in August 1996 (per wikipedia). It was approved in September. Producing an anime doesn't take too long.
@@Kleyguerth Admittedly I am not at all knowledgeable in animation production time, but if it was approved in September, they would have made it in seven months. I find that very impressive. Oh, there's absolutely no doubt the sprites were switched, it's beyond obvious just looking at Venonat and "Buttefree" side by side. But I have never been able to find out why. The "it's for the anime" thing was the only semi-decent explanation I've read for it, and the people who made the claim were certain that this was the reason (though of course that does not prove they were right). If they did it deliberately, I really would like to know why. But it's very possible that it might simply be that the artist meant something and the coder just used the wrong sprite's code for each creature.
There's no proof of the sprites being switched from any of the gen 1 betas iirc. they've always been in the lines they are. What did happen was that blastoise comes from a separate water turtle line that got scrapped and it became the new evolution to wartortle, who's previous evolution was just a bigger wartortle
so i was gonna leave a comment a long time ago saying that i preferred the videos where the current time was sorta kept secret until the end! i didn't because i like the content so much i didn't want to be a critic in any way 😂 i'm not sure there's any videos where it was completely hidden, but there are definitely some where you don't see many save screens or anything that could give you an update. i liked the mystery and reveal at the end. but now that the times are on the side throughout, i do actually prefer this a little better! it lets you know how it's going as it's going, different experience but very enjoyable! thanks for all the videos jrose we love you
Is it really fair to keep comparing everything to Mewtwo? Mewtwo is objectively the best pokemon, it's odd to expect anything, especially a bug type, to compare to Mewtwo

Very cool to see. I would love to see a collaboration between you two!
The Dragonslayer ATV has risen
Congrats AJ!
You’re doing great Shaun (Sean? Shawn?).
Keep up the excellent content. The editing and commentary is always entertaining!
Boober
Funny japanese name
When Scott’s Thoughts did a Kadabra run, he had to endure the patience of an individual who does not speedrun much, and therefore struggled.
Here, when JRose uses Venomoth, the Psychic-Flying Pokémon, he has to come to terms why Butterfree was abandoned long ago.
Worlds collide, videos are made.
I love when the Poketubers I watch mention other Poketubers. I wonder if Scott's Thoughts has watched this video yet.
I love how every time you explain your choices and why you decide to reset or not. Good work, I love these runs :)
71, had the Tinted Lens ability and its move set was:
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
- Bug Buzz
- Roost
Tinted Lens doubles the damage you do against all targets that resist your attacks, meaning you do 1x damage against a Pokemon with an ordinary resistance (instead of 0.5x) and 0.5x damage against a Pokemon with a double resistance (instead of 0.25x).
We got the old intro back lets fucking gooooooooo🎉
so iv been watching jrose for years now and i know he's generally genuine with his sponsors, so i immediately downloaded the demo for yaoling to try it out and i have to say, i think this is my absolute favorite of his sponsors. well worth the $20 and thank you jrose for making me aware about such an indie gem. people need to try this game!
"Fine it's back"
Me: YAY it's back!
Many other people have said it.... But engagement is engagement. I was very happy to see the intro again. :)
Love the Scotts Thoughts shotout! Team Dome Fossil Supremacy
There isn't a choice. Dome Fossil must be taken.
This video is so special, intro is back and there's an interaction between jrose and Scott, loved it! Also I must say that I love the new editing and animations. Now, jrose, let's talk about sandslash, which I've been asking for so long😂 next one?
11:55 3 crits in a row and a burn, lovely
Glad the intro is back. Much needed.
Backup Kadabra? How dare you insult the DRAGON SLAYER like that!
This was so much fun to watch on stream! After so many videos it's rough sometimes, but we all appreciate your efforts making these solo runs! Thanks for all the great content Jrose!
9:20 another Scott’s Thoughts reference! Let’s go!
YAY THE INTRO IS BACK 🎉🎉 😊
Venomoth was one of my first Psychic backups if I didn't have Kadabra or Alakazam for this game because it had Psybeam and that was a favorite move because it looked like a Kamehameha from DBZ which was incredibly popular at the time.
😄👍
Nowadays, it's known that Focus Blast is the Kamehameha. You can thank the Generation 6 anime for that.
A Machoke? Huh, that's one of the last Pokemon I would have imagined using a move like that.🤦♂️
Whatever, I'm sure it was pretty hype for some people when it happened.
THE HELL!?!? I had to check the time this launched to make sure it wasn't an older video! AND IT HAS THE INTRO! OMG! THANK YOU FOR THAT JROSE!
I finally relate to all those comments I’ve seen of people who stay up late because they saw a new jrose video as they were going to bed
Scott's Thoughts is going to love this
Love seeing all the Scott's Thoughts fans in the comments 😄😄😄
I was wondering what was wrong with your voice, but I'm glad you're doing okay.
This series just keeps getting better and better
Love that passive aggressive intro card 😂
Always really liked Venomoth, I've used one in my Blue team way back in the day. It's also underrated competitively thanks to Tinted Lens. Amazing vid once again dude.
Yay the Psychic Flying type
Jrosse you crack me up! LMAO “Fine, it’s back!”
Obviously best Psychic/Flying type
YEAHHHH THE INTRO IS BACK
Cinderella 2 is indeed terrible, but Cinderella 3? Qctually great.
The new editing being done is nice. Definitely a nice stylistic change
All I'll say is after a rubbish week, that little jingle was all I needed. As always love the content!
That Brock fight was so good
Intro is back and I love it! Great video bud.
FINALLY, 3am
9:25 am :)
THE INTRO IS BACK OMGGG I LOVE IT!
Piano is back! Next the count?
What a coincidence! I was just about to watch your older stuff, as I do on a near daily basis. Venomoth is going to be interesting.
OH FUCK YES, INTRO TIME
It's just feels right with the intro, thank you! ❤
Jrose11 be like... im jrose11
He be doing that
The return of the intro sound marks the beginning of the year of Jrose.
Watching this while digging though a book's bibliography section, and I cam across an article by P. Shipman and J. Rose.
Neat.
Can't believe it is the electric/flying Venomoth this time! It was really nice of you to name the trainer Scott.
so i was gonna leave a comment a long time ago saying that i preferred the videos where the current time was sorta kept secret until the end! i didn't because i like the content so much i didn't want to be a critic in any way 😂 i'm not sure there's any videos where it was completely hidden, but there are definitely some where you don't see many save screens or anything that could give you an update. i liked the mystery and reveal at the end. but now that the times are on the side throughout, i do actually prefer this a little better! it lets you know how it's going as it's going, different experience but very enjoyable! thanks for all the videos jrose we love you
Is it really fair to keep comparing everything to Mewtwo? Mewtwo is objectively the best pokemon, it's odd to expect anything, especially a bug type, to compare to Mewtwo
Yay the intro is back ❤
Venomoth is the best fairy/fire pokemon.
Hey the new editor is great but i am glad to hear that AJ is good too
I've been waiting for this one! Venomoth is one of my favourite pokemon by design
You got genuine laughs out loud from me at the Cinderella jokes... like, more than a few laughs hahaha
Man, watching your runs makes me feel bad I took the 3DS and the downloadable Red, blue (& yellow) versions for granted and never really playing them due to such old and obsolete graphics but your runs make them feel SO tempting to play, the JRose run way! 😊
Love the classic intro Jrose!!!
Thanks for returning the intro!!!!
Nice to see the intro again. And nice to see you using the very first Steel-Dark type.
Jrose is the only TH-camr whose ad reads I don’t skip, especially since most of the time it’s a game I would actually want to play
This is the best way to just unwind after a long ass day
Great job Jrose Venomoth did pretty alright I guess and its nice seeing the old intro again and keep up the amazing work
Uploading at 12:20 pst? You know your audience.
I fall asleep to your stuff every night, thank you for my Pokemon ambien
Because of Scott's Thoughts, i legitimately don't know venomoth's typing. 🤣🤣🤣
Wasn't expecting the scathing review of Cinderella 2 in this speedrun, but it was very much needed lol
AW HELL YEAH JROSE IS BACK
NEW EDITING LOOKS SPIFFY MY GUY
Jrose is a top-tier content creator. I watch these immediately after I see them every time. Best content.
Thank you for bringing back the old intro one last time :^)
thank you for bringing back the intro
