spring day is undeniably bts' most successful song in korea, it's beautiful and touching and pays tribute to the horrible Sewol Ferry tragedy. rm wrote the song by himself, and also through his song portrayed a few of his experiences with his 10 year long best friend, suga :')

The MV is said to be a tribute for the victims of the Sewol Ferry tragedy. Presenting the pain of survivors, the guilt feeling it's them who survived, instead of their friends.
*The abandoned clothes in the train. The yellow ribbons. The writing "You Never Walk Alone" on the playground above Jungkook's head. The laundry. The shoes Jimin is holding, shoes taken off usually before suicide in Asia. The pile of clothes. Omelas, a train like in Snowpiercer. Taehyung listening to the rails. Jin capturing memories into the sepia filter.*
It aslo seems like Jungkook's character has commited suicide. South Korea is facing the problem of great amount of suicides, especially among young people. The song is still charting very high in Korea, after 28 months. It's healing people.
The music video is loaded with symbolism. It's truly heartbreaking but reviving to watch it sometimes

I believe this theory too. Have you seen this video by an Italian ARMY? (It's *not* the one everyone reacts to on TH-cam.) Combining what's in this video with the choreography and the fact that Spring Day came out with Not Today and You Never Walk Alone (both of which use Dr. Martin Luther King's speech in their lyrics), it becomes really, really hard to believe anything other than that this song/MV is about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. Monroe, your reaction is a pretty universal reaction to Spring Day. I think BTS is one of those musicians that really know how to make 'HAPPY-SAD' songs. Through their own experience also their culture - they understand that life is always a delicate mixture of both things: every happiness is ushered with grief & sadness always has an underlay of hope. I find this Confucius, almost Buddhist-like approach to songwriting to be very potent. Especially in modern music market that's riddled with impersonal and gimmicky sex/anger/bragging songs.

I feel like Zak has pretty much got the meaning of this video spot on.
Really, it's about growing up and growing apart and moving on. The video follows a few members but for the most part, we stick in Jungkook's shoes as he rides this train and relives his memories.
A train is an apt metaphor for growing up. Once you're on the train, you can't make the train stop at any specific time you want - you have to keep going, keep going forward. And a train only has specific stops, so it can't make the turns that, perhaps, you'd like it to. You just have to go with the flow.
In the video, Jungkook reminisces about the happy times spent together with all of his friends. Zak is right in seeing that, when they're alone, they're sad - it's only together that they seem bright and positive.
Long story short, by the end, Jungkook realizes that he must continue on, with the memories and the strength that his friends gave him in his heart. In that way, they're still with him.
The lyrics do play a part of things too. In the beginning, RM mentions hating the person being spoken about in the song. But he also mentions missing them, and that that makes him hate them more. This is that fresh bitterness at the end of a friendship. It's easier to hate the person than to feel sad.
Later, when we get to Yoongi's verse, he mentions that he wishes that he could just forget the person instead, because he knows that he could never really hate them. So there's been time passing and growth made there.
Finally, at the end of the song, the boys sing about maybe meeting that person again someday, but sort of wishing them well until that time comes.
The song follows the whole mourning and recovery process for a lost friendship. It's really very pretty.
At the end of the video, Jimin takes the shoes that he's been carrying around all video and throws them over a tree branch. It's a monument to the lost friendship. For the rest of the video, Jimin has been bringing the shoes everywhere and looking forlorn. It represents the weight and pain of the lost friendship weighing him down and following him everywhere. By the end, though he seems scared and sad about it too, he frees himself of that by leaving the shoes in the tree, effectively moving on, but keeping his treasured memories safe in his heart, still cherishing them.

I think it's worth noting that it is the fans, not BTS, who made connections between the Spring Day MV and the Sewol ferry disaster. The only time BTS mentioned it is here:

I'm personally uncomfortable with the way fans tend to talk about it like it's a confirmed and intentional connection. The speculation and insistence often feels very disrespectful. I just wanted to let you guys know that it is simply fan interpretation since I knew people would be speaking about it like a fact in the comments.
They did comment on the lyrics for Spring Day during their comeback show livestream. RM said "Spring Day is especially based on Suga and my experience." and Suga said "Right, the lyrics are based on us".
Thank you for specifying that difference. It really irritates me when people mindlessly spout that 'Spring Day is about the Sewol'. It isn't.

Warning : It's a long post.
Many ARMY believes that 'Spring Day' is referencing the Sewol Ferry Incident (even if RM said that it wasn't his intention but he wrote it because of one spring day). But, but if you look at the choreography it represents this incident and some parts are so close to the last moments of the victims as it was reported by videos sent by them to their families.
BTS performed this song on national TV when it was prohibited by the government to talk or refer by anything to this incident.
"Spring Day" is the closure of the "Most Beautiful Moment in Life Series", it serves as a final wind-up of the narrative of loss and growing up that is reported through the rest of the Most Beautiful Moment in Life series.
The MV have also a lot of references :
- Snowpiercer ( film : after a catastrophe, Earth is plunged into an ice age, extinguishing all life except for the train = Snowpiercer... small children from the tail section are being trapped as replacement parts for "extinct" machinery, at the end, the survivors realize that life exist outside of the train)
- "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" is a short philosophical fiction by American writer Ursula K. Le Guin. The narrator depicts a summer festival in the utopian city of Omelas, whose prosperity depends on the perpetual misery of a single child.
Once citizens are old enough to know the truth, most, acquiesce with that one injustice which secures the happiness of the rest of the city. However, a few citizens silently walk away from the city, and no one knows where they go.
- The shoes : In Korea, it is a common act for someone to remove their shoes before committing suicide. When Jimin throughout the MV, holds the shoes of his loved one who has left him. The scene with the shoes hanging in the tree also has a meaning : shoes are hung like this is many cultures to symbolize the death of the owner and to place them high up so that their owner can easily find them again after death. - Clothing : This symbolism is based on a French art exhibit called Personnes by Christian Boltanski. The meaning is that the clothing is all that is left behind of someone after they die.
- Yellow ribbons, from the scene where Jungkook is alone even though people are moving around him, are an emblem used for suicide awareness.
They were also used to indicate remembrance for the victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
Sewol Ferry disaster : On the 16th of April 2014, a ferry by the name of Sewol capsized and sank. Most of the passengers on the Sewol Ferry that day were high school students from Danwon High School, who were on a field trip to Jeju island. 304 passengers and crew members died.The ferry carried a total of 476 people when it capsized, leaving only 172 alive.
The government haven't handled this incident as it must be and this angered a lot the families of the victims and the citizens. the government has instead gotten themselves into further corruption cases.
Also the government's handling of the incident removed artists and citizens right to free speech, and instead of abolishing the kind of corruption that made the incident possible in the first place,
At the end of January BTS and BigHit were revealed to have donated a total of 100 million Korean won to the families of the victims. The BTS members each donated 10 million won and BigHit added 30 million won to the donation.
BTS and BigHit made their donation and decided to treat this highly political subject after it was revealed to the general public that the government had formed a blacklist of all entertainers and artists who have showed support for the victims of the Sewol tragedy, have donated money to them, or have otherwise put a focus on the incident. People on the blacklist were, and are being, pressured into silence and being censored. ( The Sewol Ferry Incident by Cristal_Green)
But BTS were never one to shy away from controversies or politically sensitive subjects.

First, This song is not about the Ferry Tragedy! RM and Suga have both said this. The Ferry Tragedy happened in 2014 and RM wrote this song in the Winter of 2016. He said he wrote it to comfort people and Suga said that it could be about his and RMs experiences. Most people associate this song with the Ferry Tragedy because it is about missing friends and loved ones and hoping to see them again one day. There are 2 big Theories for the Music Video: 1) It is part of the Bangtan Universe Story Line and 2) it is about the Ferry Tragedy. In my opinion, it is part of the BU story line. BigHIt and BTS will not tell us. FYI, shoes hanging from tree branches and power lines symbolize that someone has passed away. The shoes belong to the person that has passed away and it is believed that when that person returns to earth (as a spirit) they will walk that much closer to heaven.

As you knew, 'Spring Day' is a song with many stories. In Korea, there was a tragedy called the Sewol Ferry incident in 2014, and nearly 300 adolescents were buried in the sea. The cause of the accident was corruption and the government officials who aided him, which led to a dismantling civil revolution. 'Spring Day' is a song dedicated to commemorating and paying tribute to the youths who died innocently.

I don't know much, but apparently spring day is based off of a very saddening event that happened in Korea. There was this huge cruise ship that had many school students in it for a holiday. The ship started sinking, and instead of the ship crew helping them, they saved themselves and left everyone else behind. Many people died that day. Although BTS weren't on this cruise ship, they acted as if they were survivors of that horrible event. The video is them mourning and carrying the guilt they felt for not being able to save their friends who had sadly passed away on that horrible day. That's why V put his head on the train track. The guilt was too much for him. That's also why jimin put those shoes on that tree at the end, to signify someone important to him that had passed away that day. Of course, BTS weren't actually survivors of that event, they were just trying to show what other people may have felt throughout that horrible ordeal. I could be wrong though. Please do correct me if I am.
