- The history of planet 4546B is one littered with tragedy and dismay. Famous for its crucial role in combating the kharah bacterium, 4546B was thrust into the limelight following the Aurora and Degasi disasters. Yet few know these were NOT the first ships to crash on the planet. To find out more we must travel to the frigid landscape now known as sector zero.

From the old Al-an conversation with Robin in the original story, he said humans were the first civilization they met. So that's why there aren't any other alien shipwrecks on the planet.
remember that this is just one water-filled crater on 4546b, which is just a small fraction of its surface. I think a lot of people forget there's a whole planet out there to consider, outside this little "lake".
@@virt1onewhat are you talking about? The planet is almost completely water with some islands and most of the oceans are deep. The “void” is really just outside the shallow areas of the crater and sector zero. And any other shallow areas. Most of the world is the “void”

Her final words were just terrifying. Trapped underwater with limited oxygen, you dont know what could be out there but, you manage to fall asleep thinking to yourself "ill save them" only to never wake up again

thats whats so fucked up about it too-- like idk, but when i first played through, i didn't quite realize that her final message had come from the ship while it was underwater, while they were trapped and running out of air. Haunting. Subanutica really knows how to do lore
@@radicalkeag I wish more people would notice how haunting this game is when you put the context of how some of these characters in the game met their end, it's truly terrifying and sad. It's extremely fucked.

I personally think the team in the ocean was attacked by warpers, as before the release of the baby sea emperor leviathans and the spread of enzyme 42, they were likely all over the planet maintaining the quarantine. Even though the squid shark in the depths is a possible attacker, I like to think they would have been able to describe some detail about it, where as the warpers could quite literally appear out of nowhere to surprise and confuse them as the warpers began to tear them apart.
I don't think so, there's no Warpers or Emperors in Sector Zero, and the crews dies at Twisty Bridges.
And those habitat are infested with Brute Sharks, they also said "Dark Waters" in the PDA which likely they're reaching Deep Twisty Bridges and met Squid Sharks there

Also they went extinct because their fabricator was destroyed by the sea dragon, and all creatures attack them after seeing them kill their fellow creatures

The guy begging to see his family again and wanting to leave to the couple that began to love each other while repairing the ship, all so lovely, almost made me cry knowing in the end they'd all die...

Don't feel bad. Most things like this go over my head in games. I'm more focused on my own character's survival than I am characters that, due to the state of the ship, obviously died a long time before I got there.
I remember being super confused when I found the wreck.
“What the fuck? Another ship? Where did this come from?”

I personally think this is the best part of BZs story. It's just so real and human. It does a great job at reminding us that the crew of the Mercury, Degasi, and Aurora are (supposed to be) real people who had lives outside of "They were on your ship and now they died, womp womp, have some blueprints".
I felt so bad for that one dude who had to watch half his team literally torn apart

the fact that Ryley Robinson managed to get of the Planet all by himself and there were like 20-30 people on the mercury II and still couldn't do it is crazy
He didnt really do anything either pretty much the emperor did all the work but also because his radio was broken so the warpers never detected him until he already gained a foothold
@@cancerouscorndog6425 Ryley was extremely lucky, by far the luckiest character you could ever get in a game, landing in safe shallows, damaged radio, got knocked out on his lifepod preventing him from entering the water too soon and getting detected by the warpers, sea emperor establishing comms with him, other crew members being the lab rats of the planet doing things that either got them killed while progressing things for others, like how certain members set up communications with Alterra or gave codes and such. Ryley didn't have to do shit but go with the flow.

I think the Mercury 2 was commission by the same Trans-Gov as the Sunbeam. Would be nice to learn more about these smaller powers in the Subnautica universe.

There's a throwaway line that Avery Quinn says that really makes the Subnautica setting kind of huge. "We're from a little Trans-Gov on the far side of Andromeda..." So humanity has conquered at least two entire galaxies, then?
@@thegardenofeatin5965 If they reached Andromeda and have already colonized all the way to the other side of it relative to the Milky Way, they are definitely also already colonized Triangulum which isn't relatively much further out as our second closest neighbor galaxy. So yeah, the story universe of Subnautica must be massive.

After watching everything from Aurora, Degasi, and this. It really feels weird how the only person who made out alive is someone who's not an expert in engineering, medicine, or alien studies.

@@marcosdheleno Maybe, I guess. After all most of the lifepod survivors died inside or near their pod. Those that do know how to swim either got dragged down by another person, met a predator, or made some bad decisions.
The two who made it to the rendezvous point would have had survived if they stopped for a while built a base and made proper preparations. You know like carrying a bunch of decoys, or a stasis rifle. I bet the CTO could've repaired the fabricator at the old degasi base.

Alien Nemo wasn't what they had expected
The one that always messes with me is the guy who wanted to make enough money for his family and just wanted to see them again. It's good character writing because it makes us emotional attached to the character and gives that extra emotion when he dies.
there is something I find more fascinating to have some ship wrecks in Subnautica, as well as wreckage, something I felt that made below zero feel a bit, absent.
Though I wonder where the Mercury first crashed before getting shot down again.

@@jarrahgold1061 As of recent when I replayed the game, I was listening to the recording and it implies the Mercury got a near miss from an Anti starship cannon, I say A as I assume they are all over the planet covering sectors, and they were saying like "if they dont want us here, then surely they wont mind us leaving" which means the ship was in a repairable state.
And I assume the mercury's current position is a second clear shot.
It says in the video where it was first shot.

I'm more scared of what else tore through the ship. There were giant holes deep inside of the ship. That wouldn't happen from getting hit by a giant laser and hitting the water hard. Something made those, and it could easily tear through space-ship grade metal.

it was probably a mixture of decades of degradation, lilypad roots, deep purple vent most likely bringing large groupings of bacteria. I'm also pretty sure the reactors exploded
Taking a guess i'd say it was probably Chelicerates that made those holes, that or just general rusting from being underwater so long

I don't think squidsharks were the cause. In the jumpscare animations, the squidsharks attempt to /swallow/ you, they don't tear you apart.
They do have a tendency to bite, though; they only try executing the player if they happen to be low health. Most leviathans do that, when their prey is at full health; a lot like the reapers do from the first game.

@@Just_Poncho If I were to reply, doubt it's Warpers. Beyond Alan's cache, a handful of sanctuaries and a phase gate, there isn't much worth protecting. The research facility and QEP definitely, but those are in The Crater.

From my understanding they where everywhere before hand just eliminating anyone who got the infection so it would make sense for them to be in the artic too and maybe as they got picked off by other predators only the ones around larger more important structures (which would have had a larger warmer population) remained
@@Just_Poncho While the warpers are supposed to deal with any and all biological threats, it's possible the Architects left in a hurry after the facility was breached. They didn't expect Al-An to go rogue, and centered most of their security around the one place where the Kharaa was being studied. They probably thought the warpers would keep the Kharaa from spreading past the crater's edge, which didn't pan out all too well in the end.
Besides, while it would make sense for them to be in the arctic, any bacterial infection would have a hard time in colder places. The Frozen Leviathan's readout even stated that the Kharaa had to put in extra effort over time to survive off the dead material, so they didn't think the polar region of Sector Zero warranted much help from their enforcers.

I think the 3 members of Elliott’s team that were “ripped to shreds” might have received a joint attack from two Squid sharks and from at least one Spikey Trap. I’ve had trouble in the area with all of these to one degree or other. It’s a very small biome, the Deep Twisty Bridges, dark and claustrophobic. There are few places to hide, and only a few Oxygen Plants to prevent a diver from immediately drowning. I think Elliott and two others were disoriented and became terrified when their other team members were being picked off by each creature, and they got out before they could even understand what was attacking them.
but squidsharks dont really have a way to rip anything to shreds. they had giant fangs, sure, but those are used to grab its prey and force it inside its mouth.
the description makes it sound more like what would happen to someone who was attacked by either of the 2 leviathans, OR, the warpers. as their claws are described to be as sharp as massive scalpels.

Perhaps it has a long recharge time, and if it wastes time on a warning shot, the assumption is it can be destroyed by return fire from orbit
It's not far fetched to think it originally emitted a warning transmission not to get close or be shot down. Now, either so long without maintenance made the transmission stop repeating or human comms can't detect it. (It takes the PDA to be face to face with the QEP to understand the transmission from the gun
Given the gravity of what could happen withe the bacterium getting off world it seems fitting to take no risks

@@Prak_Giggles The investigator Alterra hired to look into the Omega Lab and Leviathan site incidents explicitly mentions:
"A localized explosive charge was then released and detonated from a distance. Lab equipment was damaged to the point of inoperability, and all live specimens were destroyed. No personnel was injured."
So nobody died at Omega Lab.
And at the beginning of the game Lillian Bench's message to Robin (the player) mentions that her mandate with Alterra ended which lead to her leaving 4546B.
Seeing as how Lillian knew and interacted with others we learn about throughout the game: it's safe to say they all just left at the end of a mandatory work period rather than died.

the problem is, subnautica is an exploration style game first. and while having some personal story is not a bad idea. in their execution, they took away player agency. it became more of a guided experience instead.

Another tragic story... Damn, I felt so much sympathy for those poor guys, more than I did for the Degasi crew. They even managed to avoid the first hit and survive... only to perish shortly after. Damn...
I think the game should've allowed us to find the remains of the rest of the crew, self-quarantined in a cave. That would add even more drama.
Considering the state of the Mercury II, that likely happened quite a while before we eventually came to the planet and the Crew was quarantined in the Arctic Spires region which means there is the Ice Worm but also likely Snow Stalkers so after they died their bodies were likely consumed entirely.
Edit: Below Zero takes place 2 years after the first game which means the Quarantine Enforcement Platform is already turned off when we go to 4546B. The Mercury also predates the Aurora and the Degasi by quite a long time (even the Degasi predates the Aurora by like 10-20 years) and thus there isn't much left of anything or anyone.,

It's terrible what's happening because of one mistake. Mercury II, then Degasy and finally Aurora. I love the story of Subnautica and Bellow Zero. But things are terrible but these personal stories of people are breaking me from inside. I'm terribly into these mini stories or personal things that happened to the crew of all the ships, but Mercury II got me the most.
These stories are like i dont know. Its just terrible. All these stories, they seem like novels to me. But I guess I'm the broken one here.
And the line I'll save them all finished me off. She knew she couldn't do it, but at least she was happy, or so it seemed to me.

Now, contrary to my last comment about the aurora not being equipped to deal with giant space lasers, the mercury seems to have been equipped to do so but still failed somehow
It's not a case of failed despite being prepared but more like a laser of that power, range, and accuracy is unheard of. The captain herself said they were lucky to only be nicked when they attempted to enter.

It’s not even that they were unprepared, it was just that the alien tech is alien to them, far beyond what the humanoids could reproduce, it takes too tier tech and skill and luck just to avoid getting obliterated by the laser
Nah it ain't about failing or being prepared, no matter how much preparations or tech you have, there is no way the human tech in the game is ever counter the Architect/Precursor tech, you do remember how much power there is in 1 Ion cube right ? They are far beyond in tech advancement than anything humans can produce.

While I love Subnautica, I'll never not find it ridiculous that 99% of these situations (that games, books, and movies portray) would never occur in the real world with professionals-- specifically those versed in Space. You don't launch a mission into unknown worlds (had to make the joke!) without sending... PROBES! Manned missions are only greenlit when there's no immediate threat of being vaporized at the molecular level upon entering atmo.
Well the thing is imagine space being this vibrant area with lot and lots of ships, humans and station; The subnautica franchise is in a year when everybody has access to space 99% of all ships that got shot down were just trying to pull a gravity meneuver to arrive at there destination faster. Certain ones were intrested by the sudden signs of civillisation during a normal mission for a company, since most money earned is from the vast areas of space people thought that they would earn TRILLIONS from this knowledge. Yet the one planet that had signs of alien life happend to have the quarantine enforment platform. But your idea is still very smart since Altera and many smaller agencies have lost many ships via 4546b so a probe would still be a smart idea. (I like to think that altera tried this but the quarantine enforment platfrom shot it down just like everything else)
that's a joke right? if anything its exactly "professionals" that end up in the shittiest of situations. there are so many channels about professional divers, with years, sometimes decades, of experience, doing this exact crap.

@@marcosdheleno while you're entitled to disagree with me I did specifically note that it wasn't impossible, just improbable seeing that there are different protocols when speaking of space exploration.
Let me explain.
Yes, a ship can make the same mistakes as a captain can generally be the reason that their vessel goes down when its their word that engages any mission. A good example being the Degasi as they were taking a detour without any specific reason i.e. getting marooned was due to error rather than incompetence.
Alterra and the Aurora had less reason seeing that the mission was A.) secret and B.) had all the resources needed to send probes to 4546B seeing that they knew a ship had gone down but didn't have specifics. Even though the choice to fly over a planet that the Captain knew had taken a ship in the past, he at least was trying to fly around the planet not land... something that Below Zero's Captain made all the wrong choices over.
Now the Mercury II specifically had the worst reason. Why? First Contact Protocol. There was evidence of an advanced alien technology on 4546B. A major difference between them and the Degasi was that Paul Torgal never mentions having readings thus it can be surmised that they were exploring without restriction. The Mercury II on the other hand was heading back and thus had more reason to be careful when paired with having readings.
As I pointed out, a simple way for both the Aurora and the Mercury II to have avoided their fates was to send down mechanized drones/probes first seeing that they both had reason to be concerned, but the Aurora wasn't trying to land like the Mercury II was. Thus the Mercury II has the worst reason for their crash.
A simple rewrite would have been "The Mercury II sent a probe but bc it was small the Enforcement Platform didn't register it as a threat." thus making it show that they had less reason to be cautious when they went down."
That's why I said 99% of events don't happen because of protocols put into place. Its the unforeseen issues that make for great story telling, i.e. the Kharaa infection that takes the crew and all the creatures on the planet. I love the games I just wish that some details were handled better.
Probes likely wouldn't be detected by the QEP or could be easily locked on, Sunbeam had an extremely close entry and almost landed before it finally got locked on and shot down. They didn't have any info other on the planet or that the Aurora got shot down either, just an SOS signal thinking they ran out of engine grease and nothing else, that is until they got to the planet and saw what happened, but weren't thinking about what could have caused that other than the fact that there is a survivor there who likely would have warned them if they would get shot down, but had no communication to relay that. I think it's hinted enough in the game itself.
Mercury was the first ever victim, they were slightly aware of the fact that there is a species of sentient life on the planet, but were never expecting a full QEP to shoot them down or ever took caution, they were just excited at the prospect of it all. That was first time mistake of a captain with a bit too much risk for reward in mind type of ego.
Degasi had the same kind of idea but weren't aware at all of the QEP or the Architects in general.
Aurora was aware of the Degasi wreck, but it was a secret mission and it was actually not to do with them entering the planet, they simply got to close while scanning the planet when they got right on top of the QEP as they were there for a while before it targeted them. They weren't aware how the Degasi crew wrecked either, they simply knew there signal was lost near or on the planet.
Sunbeam as explained before were completely clueless to the situation.
Honestly based on that I would say it's very much a possible and likely scenario considering only 2 of the ships that crashed actually knew about the possibility of there being something on the planet, but neither were aware it would be dangerous to come close. There was no communication of any of what happened on this planet to any other ship or government/higher powers of this universe.
I've been only playing these games for a few months now, and I will tell you when I beat both games I have been obsessed with these games would be a HUGE understatement, now finding more lore to these games gives me more of an idea in how big this planet and all what could be hiding in the void or other areas that may not have been explored could hold.

Most likely fractured ribs and potential mild concussion. She was dead the moment she succumbed to sleep though. Setting aside the concussion, a small area with limited air, in icy waters would have done her in. As the air quality dropped she would have entered a progressively deeper sleep. The ship was rated for atmosphere and vacuum, but with so much damage any insulation would have been at best severely compromised. So the cold would have finished her off as her body likely wouldn't have been able to effectively shiver with so little oxygen.

they probably went to deep twisty bridges and met squid sharks. as elliot described the creature, it becomes more understanding. ryley in the original subnautica got infected like on day 13-14, these guys got infected on like idk day 20 or something like that.
So as we know the Degasi was the second one to come to the planet, in search of the Mercury and for other reasons. But only Alterra would be that stupid to send another ship even near that region. Of course I know all of these three ships are owned by three different corporations, but I don't think the disappearing of two spaceships on the same planet wouldn't catch the ears of these corps. Of course they like to keep informations like this hidden, but still, everything gets out eventually.
imagine there was an easter egg in subnautica 1 where if you went so far out (at the top of the void) to the point where you found sector zero (or vice versa)

I think brute sharks are more likely than the squid sharks.. squid sharks try to swallow you whole, but brutes would have to rip you up a bit to make you easier to eat. Another strong possibility is the warpers from the first game because they can jump scare by teleportation and would shred anyone. Since this takes place before the alian gun is shut down this is a stronger possibility. 1 other potential predator is the Cryptosuchus. Though they are easily able to ward off.. they would shred anyone that gets in there range. Also people new to the world wouldn’t have much protection and when first seeing these would panic and probably get shredded as a result. The sound they make when coming after someone would also be enough to make anyone turn away to run preventing a good look at the creature.

They probably assumed there were weapons in place to keep foreign vehicles from entering the planet, but would allow vehicles to leave the planet as it would be only the planet's own ships
It sounds to me like the Captain didn't entirely believe it. She just figured they didn't have any other option but to try and hope.
They didn't exactly have any other option anyway, it was either stay and die anyway or possibly escape and get help (die trying) again a risk for reward type of situation.
Was said in the video. The captain herself says "Let's hope it lets us leave" because they weren't sure at all. It's Alien Technology far superior to humans - most people don't even understand how their car works and you think they can now anything about a QEP?

Yeah I really doubt that an entire planetary quarantine was managed by a singular gun, especially with how close the sunbeam gets before it fires
my 1 question would be is the gun we see in the 1st game the only one or would there be more, if not would it be possible to come from the other side of the planet
I think the gun is able to use the gravity of the planet to bend the path of the projectile it fires in order to hit a target anywhere on the planet. I read about it in the scan from the QEP in Subnautica.

It would be the only gun because Ryle (Subnautica Player) disabled it, and then Altera put researchers in the frozen zone of the planet and quite possible all over the planet.
