I harvested a Grizzley about 12 years ago in the northern Rockies. The hunt was un-eventful until a few weeks latter when my taxidermist call me up all in a huff but he refused to explain himself until I got there. So naturally I drove like my hair was on fire, in a blind panic that he had somehow ruined my bear mount. So I get there in record breaking even physics defying time, and there he is in his little front office area with a huge grin on his face. So he presents to me the partially cleaned bear skull, and it has some odd lumps in the bone. Turns out they were 3 rounds of 9mm and 2 of what we assumed are .38 special. So two separate people had really bad days with this particular bear by the time I managed to take him down probably at least a year latter judging by how overgrown the bullets were.
Did you investigate to see if there were any bear attacks in the area in the recent past. Or possibly missing persons ? In Alaska they have lots of people who just go missing, I would guess that they are eaten.
The 10MM is honestly one of the best things you can carry in the woods. The 10MM Auto is no joke for a pistol cartridge. Especially some of the Some hotter loads that compete with 44 Magnum ballistically. You basically get magnum level power in a fast action striker fire package with 15 round capacity. Cant beat that.
Yeah, I do believe that the Danish government issues Handguns chambered in 10mm Auto to certain government officials (researchers mostly), in case of an encounter with a grizzly bear.

So I try to bring a lil levity to those that have seen them in zoo's or in pictures, internet etc. And there is a cocaine bear from Philly, that is also a butt-bear where I live, guy is over top with the coke and the butt sex. And yes he looks very much like a bear, and scary when he is on the drugs. So even tho it's rare, it does exist, i can confirm.
A hunter in Alaska was charged by a large sow. He emptied his blackhawk 44 at the bear. The doctors removed one of the slugs from his shoulder that ricocheted off the bears forehead. Great Alaskan Bear Tails. Great book.

You can see at 5:32 in this very vid, a 44 went clean thru it from what looks like a couple dozen yards, and even if it did ricochet; unless homie was literally less than a foot away from the bear, with it's head totally vertical like a shield, I dont see how the round bounced off it's forehead and hit homie in the shoulder lol

If you go into bear territory, remember to wear bells on your shoes. And carry pepper spray. You know if you're in bear territory when you see bear poop. You'll know if it's bear poop because it will have bells in it and it will smell strongly of pepper.
This comment was a joke.... however, to anyone actually not getting the joke:. 2 things. Bear spray and pepper spray are different things. That spray kept in purses to fend off a mugger will do nothing but season you as the joke implies. Use bear spray only. Also, unless you're in the deep deep bush in extremely remote areas, bells will do nothing. If they have had any contact with civilization, they don't care about noise makers. Bear bangers are ineffective for bears that live near towns or campgrounds. I live in the Yukon, where school field trips make me sign "Your child might be mauled to death by bears" waiver forms. So I'm speaking from experience. Carry bear spray in your hands or pocket, not in your backpack, watch out for poop, and I suggest 10mm ammo for good measure.

Great old joke: The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter. They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge. Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat so you have an idea if bears are in the area. People should be able to recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain berries, leaves, and possibly bits of fur. Grizzly bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smell of pepper.
Funny story from my Dad...this belongs here, you folks will get a kick out of this. It's like when someone wrecks a motorcycle, and people are like, "Is the bike ok?" but with hunting. Ok, mid 60's. My Dad, a few of his brothers (my uncles, of course) and Gramps go bear hunting over a weekend. No luck all weekend. They are walking back to camp and about 20 yards from camp, Dad stopped to take a leak. Everyone else kept on to the camp. Dad had a bolt action 30-06 hanging off his shoulder by the strap. He's just done whizzing, and heard something behind him. Heard the sniffing, and that distinct little "huff" like when a dog is done sniffing something and breaths out. Dad, with his "gun" still "un-holstered", (Full Metal Jacket reference, here, keep up) spins 180 degrees, shoulders the rifle, flips the safety off, and at point blank range, rips off five rounds into the chest of the bear that followed them all the way back to camp. Now, he was 50-60 feet from half a dozen other experienced hunters, so Gramps and my uncles grab their rifles, and come running, because that's what you do. Dad is standing over the bear, and Gramps sees what happened, and says, and I quote, "Rick, you didn't tell me you had a semi auto 30-06!!! Zip up your pants!" Dad fired that bolt action rifle so fast, experienced hunters, and Gramps, who was in WWII, thought he had a semi-auto rifle. The bear: heart, lungs, back straps, shoulders, all ruined. They did get some meat off the hind end, so the trip wasn't a total loss. That bear's entire upper torso was GONE. I mean, it was point blank with a 30-06! The Dad: He's 76 now, still goes camping and kayaking with his doggo and a couple of my uncles and cousins and some others in a camping group about once every month or two, very active, and in great health for his age, still tinkering in the garage and helping out older family members, friends, and neighbors. Gramps passed in the mid 90's. Uncles are still doing well.

In bear county it's recommended to carry a bear bell on your pack. It's also important to learn how to distinguish poop from black bears to that of grizzlies. Poop from black bears has berries and seeds in it, in grizzly droppings you will always find bear bells
In Canada, outdoor recreationists and people who work in the forests for a living seem to be doing JUST FINE with bear bells and bear spray. And about the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat (I know you were joking about the bear bells): They are virtually indistinguishable. Both species of bears start with grasses and plant matter in the spring and both species eat berries in the late summer and fall. Grizzly bear 💩 tends to have greater volume. In Canada we have the strange concept of "gun control," which isn't very restrictive in itself, but we don't go into the forests armed with hand cannons. Different culture, different attitudes towards conservation.

In wintertime with the dogs, I was more concerned about the moose. They can play havoc to a dog team if you can't stop in time.

In fact, I'm guessing people saying they shot the bear in the head and it just bounced off -- actually missed, Repeatedly. Like the guys saying the M1 carbine rounds bounced off Chinese soldiers' quilted jackets. They were just plinking away and missing, while convincing themselves they had hit every time (as humans tend to do). I'm guessing 40 S&W, .357 Sig, and 10mm are the best rounds, because you get decent power combined with a good-sized magazine so that you can miss repeatedly/get poor shots and maybe still land the telling one.

I live in Griz country. Other than a few spooky calls...I never fired on one. My buddy, however...had a griz that thought his shoulder blade would make a great Frisbee for her cub. His friend unloaded his 44 mag, which eventually killed it but not before the bear ran off a pretty good distance with its cub. I pack the 10 mil. with a 16 round mag full of Buffalo bore. Hey I'm in Montana. I got a 10mm as well. I bought some 200 grain bear load, but then I saw 220 grain hard cast fp bear load. Which is more effective. I'm thinking the 220 but curious if anyone knows for sure

Hey Scott, you know what you need? You should bring some wooden dowels with you so you could insert them in the bullet holes and show the bullet trajectory. Sometimes you don’t know where the bullet ends up, but with like a 1/4” wooden dowel you could see the bullets path. It would also be very interesting to be able to see/show what the bullet does after impact.
Use bear spray. I lived with the bears for 20+ years. Always have my 45 70 but it is not the go to. Doing what you’re doing while the bear is moving 30mph is incredibly difficult. What you NEED in this situation is TIME, and bear spray will give you that time to get to something a little more serious if necessary. But it has never been necessary.. bear spray has been that effective.
HA. Bear spray? You mean seasoning? Bears are incredibly intelligent. They learn and they become conditioned. Bears that have been sprayed before will not be afraid next time. A dead bear won’t be able to learn on the next person. You’re literally just conditioning the bear for someone else if you’re lucky. Plus bear spray gets recalled all the time, so you’ll have to bet on if it deploys even. Most people somehow put animal lives above theirs in cases like these. But my life is ALWAYS first. Once you’ve let a bear get within 30 yards of you, you have about 2-4 seconds to react if it charges - a chance I’d never take. The moment I spot a bear, the barrel is out and ready if it comes too close for comfort. And 30 yards is WAY too close.
@@ISirSmoke Pepper spray is a bureaucratic method for rolling the dice on whether you live or not. It lets the government control guns more while still giving a citizen the feeling of security. I want to live EVERY time, not roll the dice. So a dead bear that gets too close to me makes sure I’m always alive. I’m not gonna be a fool waving my arms around “hey bear, hey bear (spray, spray,) hey bear!” So you stick with your seasoning, and I’ll stick to my 12 gauge pump with 1610 fps federal slugs.

My dads uncle was almost killed by a Grizzly bear camping near Canada. He said if he didn’t have his 357. He’d be dead. The bear tore open his tent when he was sleeping.
I live in the Grand Teton area, we have Black bear, brown bear, Cinnamon bears and Mountain lions. It is key to hike with folks slower than you. And if they aren't, make sure they are while you are running away!
@@mitchellbrown2617 Nope , not in the Lower, but when I lived in Alaska, they were around. The Grizz in The Teton area seem more aggressive than the Kodiaks did, maybe I am just remembering wrong. But Kodiaks, did not seem to be as interested as lower 48 browns are.
in alaska we have a foolproof way to tell a black bear from a grizzly(they tell you to carry bear spray and bells to make noise for grizzlies) so the way you tell a black bear from a grizzly is their droppings ones contains seeds from berries(black bear) and one contains bells and smells like pepper(grizzly bear)
As a Canadian i don't know why people make such fuss over bear (granted im in a black bear part of the country, much smaller than grizzly) but still they have been 20 death in 34 years from grizzly attack and 24 from black bear just for context moose has killed 236 person from 2000-2014. I think bear are kinda part of our folklore since its basically the only "dangerous" thing in our forest
There's a reason why AK Troopers, and the Fish& Game use Brenneke Black Magic 12 gauge slugs. I've got 430gr hard cast for my Marlin 1895 Guide Gun. Shot placement is key. Alaskan Fishing Guide Phil Shoemaker dropped a bear using 9mm hardcast.
So many people hear about how Alaskan fish and game "uses 12 GA slugs for bear" so they think any old run of the mill slug is okay for the task, not realising that the slugs ak fish and game use for problem brownies are designed specifically for big, tough game. It's like, no bill, that 2 3\4 inch rem slugger you used for deer last season in indiana won't cut it in coastal ak 😂
@jessehoon3003 , the Bernanke 3" magnums are a completely different beast. They aren't pure lead slugs. They have tin in them to harden them. They will go through about 12" of alaskan spruce. Not recommended for personal self defense. AK state troopers and police have had issues using their shotgun in city situations and blowing through the target and the whole building. Granted, most of alaska is 2x6 stick frame. But still.

We don't have Grizzlies in Michigan. We only have Black Bears. While still a dangerous animal, no where near as violent as a Grizzly. More a nuisance than anything that loves to dig through your trash and destroy things to get to the food.
Scott, Rev. Paul Eustis Florida. I did get chased by a grizzly bear. It had already killed 2 hunters mauled a third which passed later. Dad taught us boys to run down the mountains steepest slope, front claws don’t retract. Dad could see the bear chasing me down the mountain, I came to a45 to 55 ft cliff, never stopped jump right off bro. Was cut up pretty bad but lived. The AFG shot it the next day late. Scott I’m 71 still have dreams about that bear. Can hear and see in my dream still scary.
I can imagine, I have nightmares about them from when I was a child and my grandma used to read us bedtime stories from Pap's Outdoor Life magazines "This happened to me" It was a different time and I still love anything that scares me half to death. Can you figure the profile of a bear facing you, create a target, and put it on a trolly so it is coming at you at 35 mph, starting at about 50 yards, and see how many hits you can get while it approaches you. At the distance you are, you would have about one second. If the bear was 100 yards away, you would have about 6 seconds to draw, aim, and shoot.

The fact that you hit that skull with bond arms was impressive enough, it looks like it channeled through the ocular cavity through a good amount of the brain cavity and settled in the back of the head/ neck meat. That bear would be dead, or really thinking about its life choices. All that said, a terrible choice for bear defense. But damn impressive Scott. Love the content sir! You never cease to entertain!!

I bought a brand new Glock 10mm "just in case" when I rented a cabin in the Great Smoky National Park area, and I'm glad I bought a 10mm, (I didn't use it, but I now know that it would be effective). Thanks for the video, I'll let my wife know that you said I should buy a 454 revolver just in case for a backup. And maybe some more. And ammo.

It's not necessary for the round to pass all the way through for it to be effective...plus bears actual skin on their body aren't as thick as you'd think. That first 44 Magnum shot reminded me of The Great Outdoors with John Candy. Shoots the bear with a 12ga, but it just grazes the top of the head and leaves a bald spot.
Ouch! Considering Scott knows what a catastrophic detonation feels like I'm surprised to see him shoot that Underwood 340 grain +p+ out of his S&W. Way over the pressure limit for a S&W. The website excludes S&W from the safe guns but I don't know if the info on the box does. Living dangerously I guess. That said, awesome video. Bear round arguments are pure gold and Scott was the first to do a ballistic bear round video so huge kudos!!
@@yourdrummer2034 It's the cylinders, not the barrel, that are the weak spot. S&W were the very first to offer a .44 mag revolver and it was designed to shoot the original .44 magnum round which wasn't anywhere near the pressures of that +p+ that Scott was shooting. Those kinds of pressures weren't even dreamed of when the first N frame S&W's were coming out. Most manufacturers that later started building .44 mag revolvers had the advantage of seeing higher and higher pressure cartridges being designed and built their guns to handle those higher pressure cartridges that would inevitably come. S&W couldn't do that without completely redesigning their revolver making the cylinder larger/thicker to handle the increased pressure. They chose to not do that. So for better or worse, they are still excellent guns but are significantly weaker than guns from Colt, Ruger, TC and even Taurus. My S&W 629 V-Comp is a beautiful gun and while I wish it could shoot all the ammo that its competitors can, I wouldn't give it up for one of the others. If I ever buy another .44 magnum it'll probably be a Colt Anaconda which can handle whatever I want to shoot.
Hey Scott, those 10mm 220gr hardcasts suck out of a stock Glock barrel. They don't stabilize correctly and have less muzzle energy than the 200gr hardcasts you shot through the gel in that last bear defense ammo video. For the Glock 29, the Underwood 200gr hardcasts are king. Thanks for the video!

The intro is the poor fella’s colitis day lol. Great information in your video! Remember a wounded grizzly is a grizzly that is now 10x more deadly. If you decide to shoot, continue until the bear completely quits, they occasionally retreat if surprised or initially damaged enough but tend to come back so be wary. Cheers and be well!
This is actually a very useful topic since I have ran across bears in Bear Country when out fishing. I have been lucky and they have been far enough away to get out of dodge, yeah I admit it I have a weapon when I go in the wild but I usually dip if I see a bear. Out here every year a bear eats someone and every time the story is mostly the same human sees bear, human decides to stay in area, human gets eaten later that night or dawn. Human had a stick and a pocket knife. Lol. I always carry a .30-.06 or a .357 or both. You never know.

I harvested a Grizzley about 12 years ago in the northern Rockies. The hunt was un-eventful until a few weeks latter when my taxidermist call me up all in a huff but he refused to explain himself until I got there. So naturally I drove like my hair was on fire, in a blind panic that he had somehow ruined my bear mount. So I get there in record breaking even physics defying time, and there he is in his little front office area with a huge grin on his face. So he presents to me the partially cleaned bear skull, and it has some odd lumps in the bone. Turns out they were 3 rounds of 9mm and 2 of what we assumed are .38 special. So two separate people had really bad days with this particular bear by the time I managed to take him down probably at least a year latter judging by how overgrown the bullets were.

The 10MM is honestly one of the best things you can carry in the woods. The 10MM Auto is no joke for a pistol cartridge. Especially some of the Some hotter loads that compete with 44 Magnum ballistically. You basically get magnum level power in a fast action striker fire package with 15 round capacity. Cant beat that.
Yeah, I do believe that the Danish government issues Handguns chambered in 10mm Auto to certain government officials (researchers mostly), in case of an encounter with a grizzly bear.

So I try to bring a lil levity to those that have seen them in zoo's or in pictures, internet etc. And there is a cocaine bear from Philly, that is also a butt-bear where I live, guy is over top with the coke and the butt sex. And yes he looks very much like a bear, and scary when he is on the drugs. So even tho it's rare, it does exist, i can confirm.

If you go into bear territory, remember to wear bells on your shoes. And carry pepper spray. You know if you're in bear territory when you see bear poop. You'll know if it's bear poop because it will have bells in it and it will smell strongly of pepper.
This comment was a joke.... however, to anyone actually not getting the joke:. 2 things. Bear spray and pepper spray are different things. That spray kept in purses to fend off a mugger will do nothing but season you as the joke implies. Use bear spray only. Also, unless you're in the deep deep bush in extremely remote areas, bells will do nothing. If they have had any contact with civilization, they don't care about noise makers. Bear bangers are ineffective for bears that live near towns or campgrounds. I live in the Yukon, where school field trips make me sign "Your child might be mauled to death by bears" waiver forms. So I'm speaking from experience. Carry bear spray in your hands or pocket, not in your backpack, watch out for poop, and I suggest 10mm ammo for good measure.

The National Park Rangers are advising hikers in Glacier National Park and other Rocky Mountain parks to be alert for bears and take extra precautions to avoid an encounter.
They advise park visitors to wear little bells on their clothes so they make noise when hiking. The bell noise allows bears to hear them coming from a distance and not be startled by a hiker accidentally sneaking up on them. This might cause a bear to charge.
Visitors should also carry a pepper spray can just in case a bear is encountered. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away.

Funny story from my Dad...this belongs here, you folks will get a kick out of this. It's like when someone wrecks a motorcycle, and people are like, "Is the bike ok?" but with hunting.
Ok, mid 60's. My Dad, a few of his brothers (my uncles, of course) and Gramps go bear hunting over a weekend. No luck all weekend. They are walking back to camp and about 20 yards from camp, Dad stopped to take a leak. Everyone else kept on to the camp. Dad had a bolt action 30-06 hanging off his shoulder by the strap. He's just done whizzing, and heard something behind him. Heard the sniffing, and that distinct little "huff" like when a dog is done sniffing something and breaths out. Dad, with his "gun" still "un-holstered", (Full Metal Jacket reference, here, keep up) spins 180 degrees, shoulders the rifle, flips the safety off, and at point blank range, rips off five rounds into the chest of the bear that followed them all the way back to camp.
Now, he was 50-60 feet from half a dozen other experienced hunters, so Gramps and my uncles grab their rifles, and come running, because that's what you do. Dad is standing over the bear, and Gramps sees what happened, and says, and I quote, "Rick, you didn't tell me you had a semi auto 30-06!!! Zip up your pants!" Dad fired that bolt action rifle so fast, experienced hunters, and Gramps, who was in WWII, thought he had a semi-auto rifle.
The bear: heart, lungs, back straps, shoulders, all ruined. They did get some meat off the hind end, so the trip wasn't a total loss. That bear's entire upper torso was GONE. I mean, it was point blank with a 30-06!
The Dad: He's 76 now, still goes camping and kayaking with his doggo and a couple of my uncles and cousins and some others in a camping group about once every month or two, very active, and in great health for his age, still tinkering in the garage and helping out older family members, friends, and neighbors. Gramps passed in the mid 90's. Uncles are still doing well.

In Canada, outdoor recreationists and people who work in the forests for a living seem to be doing JUST FINE with bear bells and bear spray. And about the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat (I know you were joking about the bear bells): They are virtually indistinguishable. Both species of bears start with grasses and plant matter in the spring and both species eat berries in the late summer and fall. Grizzly bear 💩 tends to have greater volume. In Canada we have the strange concept of "gun control," which isn't very restrictive in itself, but we don't go into the forests armed with hand cannons. Different culture, different attitudes towards conservation.

I live in Griz country. Other than a few spooky calls...I never fired on one. My buddy, however...had a griz that thought his shoulder blade would make a great Frisbee for her cub. His friend unloaded his 44 mag, which eventually killed it but not before the bear ran off a pretty good distance with its cub. I pack the 10 mil. with a 16 round mag full of Buffalo bore. Hey Scott, you know what you need? You should bring some wooden dowels with you so you could insert them in the bullet holes and show the bullet trajectory. Sometimes you don’t know where the bullet ends up, but with like a 1/4” wooden dowel you could see the bullets path. It would also be very interesting to be able to see/show what the bullet does after impact.
Use bear spray. I lived with the bears for 20+ years. Always have my 45 70 but it is not the go to. Doing what you’re doing while the bear is moving 30mph is incredibly difficult. What you NEED in this situation is TIME, and bear spray will give you that time to get to something a little more serious if necessary. But it has never been necessary.. bear spray has been that effective.
HA. Bear spray? You mean seasoning? Bears are incredibly intelligent. They learn and they become conditioned. Bears that have been sprayed before will not be afraid next time. A dead bear won’t be able to learn on the next person. You’re literally just conditioning the bear for someone else if you’re lucky. Plus bear spray gets recalled all the time, so you’ll have to bet on if it deploys even.
Most people somehow put animal lives above theirs in cases like these. But my life is ALWAYS first. Once you’ve let a bear get within 30 yards of you, you have about 2-4 seconds to react if it charges - a chance I’d never take. The moment I spot a bear, the barrel is out and ready if it comes too close for comfort. And 30 yards is WAY too close.

I live in the Grand Teton area, we have Black bear, brown bear, Cinnamon bears and Mountain lions. It is key to hike with folks slower than you. And if they aren't, make sure they are while you are running away!

@@mitchellbrown2617 Nope , not in the Lower, but when I lived in Alaska, they were around. The Grizz in The Teton area seem more aggressive than the Kodiaks did, maybe I am just remembering wrong. But Kodiaks, did not seem to be as interested as lower 48 browns are.
in alaska we have a foolproof way to tell a black bear from a grizzly(they tell you to carry bear spray and bells to make noise for grizzlies)
so the way you tell a black bear from a grizzly is their droppings ones contains seeds from berries(black bear) and one contains bells and smells like pepper(grizzly bear)

As a Canadian i don't know why people make such fuss over bear (granted im in a black bear part of the country, much smaller than grizzly) but still they have been 20 death in 34 years from grizzly attack and 24 from black bear just for context moose has killed 236 person from 2000-2014. I think bear are kinda part of our folklore since its basically the only "dangerous" thing in our forest

Shot placement is key. Alaskan Fishing Guide Phil Shoemaker dropped a bear using 9mm hardcast.
So many people hear about how Alaskan fish and game "uses 12 GA slugs for bear"
so they think any old run of the mill slug is okay for the task, not realising that the slugs ak fish and game use for problem brownies are designed specifically for big, tough game.
It's like, no bill, that 2 3\4 inch rem slugger you used for deer last season in indiana won't cut it in coastal ak 😂
@jessehoon3003 , the Bernanke 3" magnums are a completely different beast. They aren't pure lead slugs. They have tin in them to harden them. They will go through about 12" of alaskan spruce. Not recommended for personal self defense. AK state troopers and police have had issues using their shotgun in city situations and blowing through the target and the whole building.
Granted, most of alaska is 2x6 stick frame. But still.

We don't have Grizzlies in Michigan. We only have Black Bears. While still a dangerous animal, no where near as violent as a Grizzly. More a nuisance than anything that loves to dig through your trash and destroy things to get to the food.

Dad taught us boys to run down the mountains steepest slope, front claws don’t retract. Dad could see the bear chasing me down the mountain, I came to a45 to 55 ft cliff, never stopped jump right off bro. Was cut up pretty bad but lived. The AFG shot it the next day late. Scott I’m 71 still have dreams about that bear. Can hear and see in my dream still scary.
I can imagine, I have nightmares about them from when I was a child and my grandma used to read us bedtime stories from Pap's Outdoor Life magazines "This happened to me" It was a different time and I still love anything that scares me half to death. No idea why. They were the best grandparents ever, a few nightmares over the years is a small price to pay and I love the woods and being outdoors.

Can you figure the profile of a bear facing you, create a target, and put it on a trolly so it is coming at you at 35 mph, starting at about 50 yards, and see how many hits you can get while it approaches you. At the distance you are, you would have about one second. If the bear was 100 yards away, you would have about 6 seconds to draw, aim, and shoot.

The fact that you hit that skull with bond arms was impressive enough, it looks like it channeled through the ocular cavity through a good amount of the brain cavity and settled in the back of the head/ neck meat. That bear would be dead, or really thinking about its life choices. All that said, a terrible choice for bear defense. But damn impressive Scott. Love the content sir! You never cease to entertain!!

I have a Glock 40. The long barrel gives a little less recoil and a bit more velocity. Also you can’t beat 15+1. But I bought it for wolves, not bear.

I bought a brand new Glock 10mm "just in case" when I rented a cabin in the Great Smoky National Park area, and I'm glad I bought a 10mm, (I didn't use it, but I now know that it would be effective). Thanks for the video, I'll let my wife know that you said I should buy a 454 revolver just in case for a backup. And maybe some more. And ammo.

It's not necessary for the round to pass all the way through for it to be effective...plus bears actual skin on their body aren't as thick as you'd think. That first 44 Magnum shot reminded me of The Great Outdoors with John Candy. Shoots the bear with a 12ga, but it just grazes the top of the head and leaves a bald spot.
Ouch! Considering Scott knows what a catastrophic detonation feels like I'm surprised to see him shoot that Underwood 340 grain +p+ out of his S&W. Way over the pressure limit for a S&W. The website excludes S&W from the safe guns but I don't know if the info on the box does. Living dangerously I guess. That said, awesome video. Bear round arguments are pure gold and Scott was the first to do a ballistic bear round video so huge kudos!!

@@yourdrummer2034 It's the cylinders, not the barrel, that are the weak spot. S&W were the very first to offer a .44 mag revolver and it was designed to shoot the original .44 magnum round which wasn't anywhere near the pressures of that +p+ that Scott was shooting. Those kinds of pressures weren't even dreamed of when the first N frame S&W's were coming out.
Most manufacturers that later started building .44 mag revolvers had the advantage of seeing higher and higher pressure cartridges being designed and built their guns to handle those higher pressure cartridges that would inevitably come. S&W couldn't do that without completely redesigning their revolver making the cylinder larger/thicker to handle the increased pressure. They chose to not do that.
So for better or worse, they are still excellent guns but are significantly weaker than guns from Colt, Ruger, TC and even Taurus. My S&W 629 V-Comp is a beautiful gun and while I wish it could shoot all the ammo that its competitors can, I wouldn't give it up for one of the others. If I ever buy another .44 magnum it'll probably be a Colt Anaconda which can handle whatever I want to shoot.
Hey Scott, those 10mm 220gr hardcasts suck out of a stock Glock barrel. They don't stabilize correctly and have less muzzle energy than the 200gr hardcasts you shot through the gel in that last bear defense ammo video. For the Glock 29, the Underwood 200gr hardcasts are king. Thanks for the video!

If you decide to shoot, continue until the bear completely quits, they occasionally retreat if surprised or initially damaged enough but tend to come back so be wary. Cheers and be well!
This is actually a very useful topic since I have ran across bears in Bear Country when out fishing. I have been lucky and they have been far enough away to get out of dodge, yeah I admit it I have a weapon when I go in the wild but I usually dip if I see a bear. Out here every year a bear eats someone and every time the story is mostly the same human sees bear, human decides to stay in area, human gets eaten later that night or dawn. Human had a stick and a pocket knife. Lol. I always carry a .30-.06 or a .357 or both. You never know.
