  • Not so bad when you have everything adjusted and lubricated.

This guy is right, he knows how to operate an international tractor nothing hard about it if they are adjusted correctly. They are actually easier than the Deere’s of the day. Not power shift, but a lot more usable gears than Deeres power shift, or quad range.

well adjusted clutchs make all the diff in the world there. One thing that would be nice standard equip for these ol girls would have been a foot throttle also when doing alot of roading or loader work . they seem to shift better and faster
with an rpm change. Very few came out with that option

If everything is clean, well adjusted, lubricated and the cab mounts are good, it's a breeze

We had a transmission brake installed in ours. Seems like a lot of people complained when it was operator ignorance.1086 was strong in the horsepower dept. Turn the Bosch pump up and it would dyno 170-180. Worse thing about them was a little weak on hydraulics. Nowadays, the new complainers hate the power shift trans in Deere 8000 series tractors and want the IVT which is a lot more expensive and won't hold up as long. The power shift is great. I started life on a Farmall H, 400, 350, 460, 656. 544, all the 66 series tractors and 86 tractors. I've been through most of the Deere 40 series and my last experience was with the Deere 7 and 8000s. I still have a IH 5288 which has the tri-six.

My grandparents bought their International 3588 2+2 brand new in 1981 and they said that it ground into gear right from the factory.

You still got it? We got a 6588 and 6788 both under 2k hours they're becoming rare

@@broadside9236 No. We sold both our 3588 and 3788. The neighbors use their 2+2's for haying for running the baler and haybind. One uses a 3588 and the other a 6588. They said they are so cheap on fuel.

Yours shifts a lot easier then our 1086, ours has been hard to shift since it was new! Maybe because you have the full cab to keep the shifter mechanism out of weather and dirt yours shifts well! We have the four post with top but open platform so I clean organic material out of the housing and floor area that encloses the shifter handle, when I do it seems do help but still not moved easily!

Didn't down shift on the go, wonder why 😂

That's easy as well. Especially if you have any experience with a semi.

@@smgussey it's the inline shift and left hand shifting that gets me. I can't do it

Had an early 80’s model 1086 that got bad about getting hung up between high and low range. Had to take floor pan out and move lever with pry bar. It was more of a linkage problem than transmission problem.

      My uncles 1086 always ground
The gears hard when rolling and shifting to a higher gear. From park directly to high was a grind also. I found that going from park to reverse them directly into high wouldn’t grind. I loved running that tractor though.

I always have to really think about it when I downshift my 1286, pulling up while moving to the left is such an unnatural feeling, sometimes I pull to far back and hit my head on the steering wheel. I also don’t really like the shifter on my 1466, I think it’s too far to reach but it’s definitely better than the 1086. Also I hate the TA position on the 1286, it’s way harder to push in that position, a way the 1466 is better as well

Do you have a foot throttle on this 1086? Was that an option?

    • @smgussey

Foot throttle was an option on the 88 series and can be retrofitted to the 86 series... Ours does not have one, though.
