    We ran a straight pipe on our jd 4640 and you could tell the difference in noise when you closed the door! They were great cabs that jd built for years!

    they both JD & IH are good tractors keep the oil clean & fuel clean cool the turbos and keep the air filters clean they will both last forever..I like them both

    IH was destroyed from within. Axial Flow was a totally superior product for decades. The modularity of the 68 and 88 series tractors was incomparable. Meanwhile the corporate clowns at HQ angled to line their pockets

    We were Deere dealers and large farming operation. That 30 series for the most part was Deere's dark times. Tractors were a warranty nightmare. Sound Gard bodies were an improvement over 20 series cabs.

    We have a 1086 and a 1586 but I have operated deere 30&55 series. I think the got pros and cons, the ih is a bumpy ride but it dose pull good, and I like having 2 doors, the deere (4255 mfwd) also pulls like a boss and is a bit smoother and the cab is comfortable but the a/c sucks, so dose one little door. I like both companys tho so I dont complain about either one

    I like my soundgaurd cab on my 4455 John Deere over any ih cab I've ever seen. Most of their points about soundcard cabs are non issues in the real world

    i guess they forgot to mention the hard shifting on the 86 series and having controls strung all over the cab. 30 years later you see 5 soundguard cabs to every one control center. they also forgot too mention over all tractor quality the john deeres were actually made to handle the power they produced. the 86s had numerous rearend and ta problems. there is a reason a john deere 4440 sells for twice as much as a 1086 with the same hours.

      Not around here...there are just as many or more IH to green. Don't forget, they used that owlcage cab up into the 90's, IH used it from '76 until '85. Lube the shifters once a year and they shift great.

      ok first of all the reason IH quit using that cab in 85 was because they went broke, remember. IH made a good tractor theres no denying that but they were always just a little bit be john deere. there is more to a tractor than just a cab. if i remember correctly IH never came out with a powershift transmission, and that dry clutch on the IH always wears out about every 3,000 hours vs a john deere they will go over 10,000 without a needing a new clutch. The front end on a johndeere is two pieces of solid steel bolted toqether vs a hollow pipe front end. And what about the rearend issues on the 86 internationals. JDS were made to stand up to there power. in the soundguard cab everything is right there at your right hand except for the pto now i have never been in a 86 but the 66 has control scattered every where and is very incovienent. the onlyway i would buy an IH 66 or 86 over a 30, 40, 50 or 55 series deere is if cost or fuel consumption was an issue. which brings me to the point if the 66 and 86 series were so good why do they go for half the price as a 4440 with the same amount of hours and same condition. but sorry i dont see where the 86 series are better than the johnies.

      duramax diesel powa IH didn't go broke. The Ag division was sold to Tenneco which in turn merged it with their ailing Case division. And actually the Magnum cab is the same construction as the Control Center, except with only one door, and opening the opposite way. The Magnum is an all IH design with full powershift that was meant to go in the next models in the 5X88 series. The 50 thru 5488 had a master wet clutch. Even dry clutches last a long time with proper usage. I just changed an original 6700 hour clutch in a 986 and it showed normal wear.. would have lasted many more hours... the customer wanted it done though. I also just replaced a wet clutch in a 4430 at 6500 hours that was completely gone. The IH front axles were supposed to be updated to 3 grade 8 bolts in the telescoping joint instead of 2 but few had it done. You should spend some time in an 86 series... you will see how much nicer the cab is over the 66 you ran, and much roomier and better view with conveniently placed controls over the deere.

      Ok let me put it this way if tenneco would have bought out IH they would have gone broke. They were going broke when they were bought out. and as far as the powershift goes john deere introduced the powershift in there 4020s in 1963 so that mean IH had 22 years to come out with a poershift trans but they never did. and john deere had had a wet clutch for 8 years before IH finally got one. and dry clutches may last a while but they have to be babied and who buys a tractor to baby it so you dont tear the clutch out that should have been built tough enough to handle the abuse in the first place. it also took IH 8 years after the 4430 was introduced to offer a tractor with a good front axle and not that junk pipe frontend and not to mention the Ih TA,s john deere had a much better setup with the high/low system. i am sorry but you have to admit IH was always a few years behind deere in technology.

      duramax diesel powa Nope... Ford had the first powershift.. the select-o-speed. And whoever said you had to baby a dry clutch? I have 200 customers and most with dry clutches in their tractors and I don't see them being tore out the way you make it sound. If dry clutches are so bad then why do over the road trucks still use them? IH didn't need a full powershift for years because their engines have such power and lugging ability with unmatched torque rise that quite often downshifting was not necessary. And if it was, the TA or the later STS transmission had an effective downshift. I have rebuilt my share of jd 2 speeds also. JD a leader in technology?? That's a joke! They are the only company to hang on to ridiculous 2 cylinder hit and miss engines up until the 60's.. haha. IH was always the leader in technology.. deere never spent any money on R&D.. they always waited for someone else to invent things and then took them when they could.

    we have a 1066 and 7000AC and 7020AC the 1066 rides smoother than the 7020 and out pulls it too the 7000 rides sorta smooth

    They ( IH ) put on two doors, but they put the hinges on the wrong side - they'll knock you off the steps if you're not ready for it. I don't remember ever seeing another piece of equipment at any point in my life with doors hinged on the left side. Of course they shifted on the left side too, so I guess they thought: what the heck?

      Hinges are placed the same as any modern pickup truck or car, also, try and find a modern farm tractor that doesn't have a left handed transmission control.

      @@FarmallDoctor it's not a car or truck; its a tractor with steps. I notice that nobody followed suit. Other than maybe a reverser, I'm not aware of any tractor shifting on the left side since IH. Most manufacturers eventually grouped everything on the right console.

      I fail to see any negative issue with having shifters on the left unless you are paralyzed on the left, or are missing a left arm. A great advantage is being able to shift on the left and run the hydraulic remote valves or 3pt. hitch on the right at the same time as in loader or blading work.

    I love classic IH (pre-merger), and my father bought new a 1981 1086, so I grew up in it and operating it...the rest of my family had bought new Deere row crop 40 series (4240&4440)...so almost a direct comparison to this video (30 series Deere featured in video)...2 outright lies/claims IMO...it sucked back up to implements compared to Deere. With the 1086 you had to extend your neck like inspector gadget and look over the rear fuel tank to mate implement...compared to just looking over your should in a Deere. And the 2nd claim that I found false is the IH cabs were quieter...maybe compared to 30 series Deere, but not our 40 series. Other than it be a hard-shifting old bugger, it was a great old workhorse and extremely reliable. Far better traction than the Deere 40 series too.

    To add anything they didn't compare it to Ford that had a much better cab then both. You could split it with the cab one draft and lift was east to get too it had 2 doors the dual power (open and cab) was much better then any TA out there. Ironically though all of them for their day were just as quiet.

    The sound guard was a flop, trying to invent the wheel. I still remember the brochures showing "how noise goes AROUND the front of the cab". Inters for me, this, bumpy ride thing is dubious also. Some of you boys might wanna slow down a gear or two. My 1086 and 1586 worked faultlessly, devastated to see them close.

    My 986 rides alot rougher then John Deere 30&40 series. Shifts hard now days, the linkage is getting worn! My IH 5288 does ride alot better and like the power shift.

    Quite an improvement over the 66 series and yes much better then John Deere. But still almost a decade behind Case 70 series cabs and Massey Ferguson as well. Still always liked the 86 series tractors. My father figured I won the lottery when IH and Case merged as they were always my two favourite brands of farm equipment

    Thats bs about the hydrolic seat when IH came out when the 86 series John Deere already came out with 40 series witch the hydrolic seat was optional. Honestly i love the IH's, my fav is the 66 series.

    I've owned both Both are good Deere cab is quieter. Shifting and console is better. IH burns less fuel doing the same work and are generally cheaper to get. IH FOES NOT ride smoother

    Ive driven a 4230 and a 1086 and the 1086 control center is way more quiet, clean, smooth riding, and Ice cold A/C, then a JD soundgaurd wich was dusty, loud and had poor A/C performance

      I think they put the doors on that way is because on the older tractors the hold down for the door will break and you will drive over the door and ruin it

    If you look closely at the cabs IH copied a lot of the features from the Case 70 series cabs. Also the Case Comfort King was ahead of the axel and fuel tanks in the rear

    Case cabs were hard to get out of because they were positioned on the wrong side and you felt like you were falling the whole time

      Case cabs? There hasn't been a Case around these parts in years to even remember what they were like. I think I remember that they were more like climbing a ladder to get in with nothing to grab. The IH '86 was better.

      Ive been in both cabs a lot over the years, and to me the IH cab is a lot better. What I hate most about the Deere cab is that poorly placed shifter on the right hand side. It juts out into the space your right knee needs to be in to operate the brakes, and rubs you all day. So, you move your foot to the center of the cab to get away from it, right? nope, that transmission tunnel is in the way! And if you put your foot on top of it, and are tall like I am, your knee interferes with the steering wheel. The lack of a second door, and the windows that barely open, means the cab is stifling hot in the summer if the AC doesn't work. Around here, every sound guard tractor eats A/C compressors every 3-6 months like clockwork. Why? because some genius at Deere decided the A/C compressor should go next to the exhaust manifold and muffler, resulting in the compressor overheating and locking up. Sound wise, i think the cabs are about the same if they have their insulation in them, and it isn't missing. Problem is, most of them had their insulation and carpet rot away decades ago. The forward vision leaves a lot to be desired, and the difficulty in being able to see the hitch in the Deere is irritating without opening the rear window to see it. The seat quite frankly sucks compared to the hydraulic ride seats in the IH. These are just a few things Ive noticed after running both cabs for several years. If given the choice between the two, as a mechanic alone, I would choose the IH cab just for serviceability and ease of maintence over the Deere sound guard.

    Screw the cab...Deere had a better one except for the glare from the rounded windows. I have ran both kinds, Deeres are more comfortable but IH has more low end torque.

    They obviously haven't driven each of them all day. The Deere rides much better hands down and turns tighter. I hate the doors on the IH 86 series tractors. It sucks getting into one with duals on it.

    just bought a 106. you dont get a better tractor then that. easy to get in and out and shes got power beyond. she will pull a 7 shank chisel plow for 10 hoursa on 10 gallons of fuel. and it puts out 154 hp when its rated at 136. shes got balls.. get one

      IH is still in business. They are still building trucks, and the Ag division is still building tractors as CaseIH. How do you figure that "the front end is junk"?

      Hate to burst your bubble Karl, but IHC is still around. Ask anyone in Kenosha, and they will set you straight. IHC is still alive, as a shell corporation inside of CNH. The Ag side of CNH is called International Harvester by CNH employees, and the construction side they call New Holland. When Tenneco bought IH, they ditched almost every tractor design they had on the drawing board, and embraced IH. The Magnums, combines, tillage, planters, etc all were chosen over Case designs. The 5100-MX Maxxums were the only thing Case related shortly after the merger with IH.
      As for your assertion that the front ends are junk, I am confused to say the least. I see more Deere tractors here in Missouri having their front ends rebuilt than anything else. It also never ceases to amaze me how much tighter the IH tractors can turn, than a Deere the same size. Hell, my IH 826 (94 HP) turns tighter than my grandfather's JD 2750 (70 HP) can, and the IH towers over the Deere and is longer. 105 inch wheelbase on the 826 Vs. 89.2 inches on the 2750.

      @@TheMasterClue exactly! The original "Boxcar" Magnum is essentially an improved 50-series with a fully powershift Synchro-tri-six and a 8.3 Cummins C-series (Consolidated Diesel). Dad got that from the factory engineers during his tour of the Racine plant when he bought the first gen 7140. Replaced it with a Gen 2 two years later. We still have her.

    The only advantage I could see with ih over Deere is fuel efficiency. The glare sucks at night on the Deere but at least all the controls can be reached with one hand in one spot other then the pto. Ih you got to reach all over the place with both hands can’t see out the back to hookup something easy has NO leg room pain in the ass to climb in and out of. Fuel tank on the rear of tractor once again pain in the ass to fuel if pulling something wider then the tractor. Oh and a dumb ta that’s a nightmare and cost out the ass. If they would have came out with there magnum cab an transmission instead of building the 88 series the way they did might of done something good.....

      Why you want them to do a mass recall again? There's quite a few different sites and books that basically say it wasn't tested all the way when the 88s came out.

      Farmall Doctor Got a kick out of this. Set forward cab with tank behind you so you cant see the drawbar . Levers all over the place which is fine if you have 4 hands not to mention i have walked more then ive cared to due to locking in gear. Have ih friends that wouldn't take a 86 series if you gave it too them. Even though my blood runs green i respect the 66 series.

      I know this is an old post but, I have a 856, 5488 and had a 1586 and used a 4020, 4430 and a 4440. Well I liked them all! But like the 856 better than the 4020, but hey whats not to like about a 4020. Didn't like the 4430 at all! road rough, louder for some reason, shit was always loose on it, bought broke a leg on those damn steps!lol. But the owner could have given it a little more love. The 4440 that owner reworked the whole tractor, it is sweet! But didn't like the JDs cab near as well as on the 1586 or 5488. Hated the quad shift! on all of them. I'll admit maybe if I got more used to it? I remember when I got the 1586 a friend of mine that had the 66 series said doesnt it ride rough? And it didn't at all! If memory serves me the 86 series and 88 have the seat in front of the axels. Talking about rear ends all I know is when I bought the 1586 the filter light would come on with new filters a flame out of the pipe about 6" high, bought a 6 bottom 20" plow with it and would damn near pull it in road gear, had to slow down because it threw the dirt to far. Took it to a great mechanic about the filter problem. Got a call the next day was told somebody (not me) turned it up. He said I have a dyno that goes to 250hp and it pegged it! Thats why the filter light comes on. He said how many hp you want? I said what it's supposed to have factory like 165hp, got it back no more filter trouble. Also could't really tell much difference in pulling power. So what I'm trying to say is it never had rear end, transmission, TA or motor problems with it. The mechanic said God only knows how much hp it had or what the original owner was trying to do with it. But my favorite is the 5488 by far. (so far). Also read a forum of all color tractor owners the topic "best tractor ever made" no 1 was IH 856. Maybe also someone could tell me the better series JD power shift was 45, 50, 55? A JD buddy told me to stay away from earlier power shifts. In case I ever try one. who knows?
