I've been a long devoted LA DODGER fan since I was 4 yrs. old and I remember during the 70's when the Big Red Machine would just dominate my DODGERS and I had a total dislike for the Reds. Then I attended a Reds-Dodgers game in 1976 with my older brother and uncle and they decided to go stand by the visitor's lobby exit after the game and persuaded me to get Sparky Anderson autograph. Initially I didn't want to, however I'm glad I did because I was wearing my Dodger baseball cap and Sparky was still gracious to give me his autograph. That's something I'll never forget. Sparky Anderson was one of the greatest managers of all time, but was even a better human being. Great video, RIP Sparky!
What an amazing interview, and what an amazing former manager. So honest, so humble. Not one drop of ego or insecurity. So open and introspective. Freely admitting where he was wrong in things he said, moves he made, the way he handled situations. How many former coaches/managers are like that? Many are the exact opposite. Already loved Sparky. Now, even more. And Roy Firestone is/was a phenomenal interviewer. Absolutely top shelf.
Loved this always had the respect for sparky being a tiger fan no surprise even when he was in Cincinnati and all the great players he managed he was blessed thank you
What a great man and not just a baseball man. Had the ultimate pleasure meeting him and came away wishing he’d manage my favorite teams. Loved his comments on life in general l,Baseball and Pete Rose. Pete needed Soarky
When I clicked on this, I was missing baseball a whole lot. I am missing it and Sparky Anderson a whole lot more now. Somewhere around 17:00 into this clip, Sparky talks about Peter Edward “Pete” Rose and his ❤️ is apparent. As complex a character as Mr. Rose is, it is clear that he put the “Pete” in “compete”. I miss these characters and this sport now more than ever.
I feel ya. Not many players will give you everything they have, every single night. You might like the Pete part of this... th-cam.com/video/FKf_mgQX-Ho/w-d-xo.html
I remember one year Chet Lemon was hitting like 400 in April the media asked Sparty about it . Sparky rolled his eyes and said he will be at 265 by the end of September. The whole room cracked up.
One of my favorite Sparky Anderson stories was reading many years ago about a writer who had interviewed Bobby Cox, Tony LaRussa, and Sparky. He had asked Sparky about speaking for a local charity and it was short notice, just after a Saturday afternoon game. Sparky said he would be there and he was. He kept his promise. He often would talk about his father and say things like, "My Daddy said if you make a promise to someone, always make sure you keep it." Sparky also managed a minor-league team with the Cardinals in the mid-1960s and the black players were refused entry into the hotel. Sparky insisted they be allowed or they would go someplace else. They did.
It doesn't matter if Rose isn't in the Hall. All of his true fans, and I'm proud to be one of them, know he's arguably the best player, all around, who ever played the game. Truth doesn't need the Hall. Truth stands by itself.
On an all time great fantasy team, I wouldn’t start Pete at any single position. He’d still start nearly every game, just at 5 different positions every week. Not many guys you can dream of doing that with. Imagine the Reds with Schmidt at 3rd and Rose spot starting every game. Maybe a couple times a week for Geronimo by sliding Griffey over. Yikes!
Only a fool treats every player the same in regards to team rules, or is a cowards and won’t admit to different rules. Sparky was no fool or coward. Great manager. The Reds elite players were given a different set of rules but didn’t abuse them. Why? Sparky knew they were true leaders. Listening to Bench and Rose interviews on this topic is reveals one of Sparky’s best qualities as a manager. Of course he had many other great qualities too.
Sparky with Det VS KC Royals walked George Brett with the bases loaded, after game he was asked why he walked George Brett with the baes loaded, he replied I would rather give up 1 one run than 4
did Sparky say at 14:05 that he was considering pulling Eastwick and bringing in McEnany in the the middle of the at-bat when the count got to 2 strikes on Carbo in Game 6? I'm confused about what he was saying there.
Will Ritter ... yes, that’s exactly what he said. Carbo had 2 strikes on him and had just taken one of the worst swings ever just barely fouling off a pitch to stay alive. Sparky said he then started up the dugout steps to change pitchers (LH McEnaney to replace RH Eastwick) but changed his mind for fear that Boston would pinch hit Juan Beniquez for Carbo in that situation.
I like the way Pete Rose shoved the base runner with his glove to let him know he was out that extra shove with the ball in his glove made me laugh, Pete was tough.
I met Sparky in 2000, down to earth man. I miss you, I pray you are resting in peace. From a devoted fan. God Bless You, Sparky.

Roy Firestone was a fantastic interviewer... You learn from his interviews about the people and the games

Hi Jay Emm, Sparky is my grandpa. I would love to hear more stories that you have of him!

Greatest manager ever.

I remember Sparky called out Billy Martin for using cameras to steal signs before 76 series.
Firestone must love the Reds. That's all he asked about.
Does anyone else remember "the main spark"
What's the story behind Bobby Tolan?
