    It doesn't matter how powerful the handheld is. It usually comes down to price and the games you want to play.

      I dont even like Ayaneo, but youre comparison makes zero sense. There are tons of PC gamers who would love to play portably, but didnt like tht almost every handheld was underpowered or had some kind of gimmick to keep interest. Also the ecosystems would always close off buying software outside of Sony and (mostly) Nintendo offerings, where once the console was dead in 5-7 years all the money you used to buy software was now gone
      Devices like the Ayaneo, Steam Deck, etc solve all these problems, and don't try to penny pinch you for every $ after you buy the hardware one time, and each piece of software one more time. On top of that, they solve the lack of legacy software support due to emulation being available without jailbreaking. None of them aim to sell 10s of millions of units, only Valve could potentially keep up with that demand.
      90% of Nintendo fans who love their Nintendo handhelds since the Gameboy are ok with the console life cycle/power restraints and like an easy experience. Nothing wrong with that. But dont be telling these portable PC manufacturers they gotta dumb down their products. Even at $300 an Ayaneo isnt selling millions of units from Indiegogo campaigns shipped from Hong Kong lol

      @PixelShade ปีที่แล้ว +16

      look at The Phawx videos about ROG Ally, before you fall to much for the marketing... It's really not going to be what people expect since they are overselling what a handheld GPU can offer by using specs and clever wording.

    • @Allyouknow5820
      @Allyouknow5820 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@PixelShade sure it won't do 120 fps (people expecting that are just fooling themselves honestly) and Asus marketing is... well it's Asus marketing.
      However. What will be really interesting to see is how it does at 5watts, 7 watts and 10 watts.
      Because perf per watt should be quite a bit better with that rdna3 iGPU.
      Personally don't care for that device, have plenty of gaming gear and I don't like the look of the Ally, but I'm certainly curious about the progress in perf per watt.
      For example since it's a game in this video: Ori and the will of the wisps should be playable at under 10 watts on the Zen4/rdna3 APU where here with the 6800U you have to pump it up to at least 15 watts to have good enough performance. Same with Control if you can have it at 15 watts for a 720p60 instead of having to go for 28/30 watts.
      This is where the main advantage will reside, not in providing that much power, but providing same power at a much lower wattage.

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Allyouknow5820 I'm with you mate. I'm extremely curious about the performance/watt improvements as well. Unfortunately I am getting a feeling it actually won't be as much as people expect. Looking at the difference between Zen2 and Zen3 in some cases there's only ~12% IPC improvement, with blender showing a result of 5%. which is still great as both were 7nm chips, But ultimately it wouldn't do a massive performance difference on a low TDP chip in gaming. I am actually very curious of what will happen between RDNA3 and RDNA2, since the current RDNA3 chips draw A LOT of power. So question is what kind of efficiency improvement we can expect.
      I honestly think Valve and AMD went with Zen2 since it could be much easier scaled down into a low powered APU. AMD had Zen3 design ready but still figured Zen2 would be better for the Steam Deck. Whatever they choose the APU would still be developed on TSMCs 7nm node, causing any efficiency gain to be quite small.

    • @Allyouknow5820
      @Allyouknow5820 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PixelShade regarding the CPU, it actually doesn't matter that much, and Valve rightly recognized that, betting on a more performant GPU and bandwidth (because bandwidth is the absolute most important thing in those mobile chips).
      Whether RDNA3 is really efficient, I think it is, because once you scale down the clocks the efficiency curve goes back in your favour.
      The problem is that both Nvidia and AMD have now took the habit of just pushing those clocks for basically bragging rights. Just look at the recent 4070 which does about 3080 performance, but while consuming 100/150 watts less.
      We'll see with the Ally and others, but given it is on a 4nm process and that RDNA2 was already an efficiency champ, I think it will deliver good surprises on that front.
      But again if people are expecting more performance as opposed to better perf per watt, they will be disappointed.

      @@PixelShade The phawx was only talking about how the marketing could build unrealistic expectations. i own this device for about 3 months. I have to say... its not good at all. Although better spec than my steam deck. The temperature is extremely hot after 15mins of game play, i contact ayaneo thinking its a defect but they say its... normal and advise to play with charging plugged in. It can't play most AAA games without flickers. I tried the lowest setting in Resident evil 4 remake and it crashes and reboots when the temperature gets too hot. Battery is also a joke, the device drains much faster than it charges. i can't finish a hour of game play without constantly checking the battery health. Stay away..

    Thank you for doing the performance review at reasonable TDPs / frame caps. There's no use in something being portable if it isn't practical to use it portably, and battery life forms a significant part of whether or not a portable device is practical. It's nice to have the option to crank everything up when connected to a power source, but since these devices are not marketed as 'stationary gaming handhelds', it doesn't make sense to review them that way either. That's not to say that I think the maximum performance of these devices shouldn't be demonstrated, but rather that the bulk of the performance review should focus on the more realistic use case.

    This basically outlines why most of us, even with money went and got a Steam Deck instead.... $1299 for a well spec'd Ayaneo is more than an ASUS Tuf RTX 3070 ti laptop right now, on top of the fact that this will often have to run things in 720p and achieves barely 5-15 more fps in games than the SD....I just cant get myself to pay those prices....maybe the Rog Ally will change that. Plus it has back paddles/buttons which is a must for some gamers....

    Well if you think about it, steam deck is community driven nd supported even before steamdeck was a thing, proton db allowed most of the games to run on linux. Yes Steam deck is not as powerful as the others but the amount of support from community will allow the development of the software longevity. Ayaneo and other competitors are pushing spec like smarphone but once a new iteration of it comes out the support for the software will be forgotten.

    It's worth noting with the button diameters, since you're more concerned with the actual area of the buttons, and area is proportional to radius squared, that 0.5mm increase in radius should result in about a 30% increase to the area - which is definitely a noticeable jump.

      The problem with undercutting Valve is it’s going to be near impossible for any competitor to even match the value the Deck provides. Valve can lose a lot of margin on each Steam Deck, given the platform is built on Steam and they’re going to make back that margin through software sales. I was a beta tester for Steam before its full release and while I know they’ve had their problems, they are the ubiquitous platform for PC gaming and it’s unlikely they will ever lose the top spot. Long story short, I completely agree that the Deck is likely to never be dethroned as the most affordable, price versus performance handheld. Even Asus’s new handheld has a tough battle to fight.

      I have an Odin pro and loved it but it made me crave a more powerful device. When I started looking at the Windows based handheld I was checking the Loki first but without any clear release date it was hard to settle on it. The SteamDeck is too big for my taste and the Ayaneo 2 is way too expensive for the features. I too went with the GPD Win 4 in the end. You never realize how useful a physical keyboard can be for PC games until you don't have one. I put Windows 11 on my Odin and it can run Skyrim decently. I had to plug in a physical keyboard just to name my character at the start because it can't be done with a controller and I couldn't get the on screen keyboard to work in games.

    Battery life is the unsolvable barrier for x86 handhelds. Steam deck is still the best in that regard and it's getting old.
    One thing to consider is something like local streaming on an android handheld if you already have a gaming PC. I optimized my network for it and played about 6 hours of Elden Ring at max settings 60 FPS downsampled from 1440p on my Retroid Pocket 3+ yesterday, one room away from my PC, and the latency was perfect with no stutters, with the battery still at 30% after those 6 hours of playing a high end PC game.
    Sure it's not really portable, I can't leave the house and do this, but I don't play anything when out of the house anyway and if I do it's something quick like Vampire Survivors or GBC/GBA emulation which will run on ARM fine, so...

    • @ultimategohan1551

      Battery life will get there with zen4/rdna 3 hopefully. With a 50% increase performance per watt(heres hoping), full steam deck 15w performance on those devices at 10w with 50-60+wh battery should easily put future x86 devices in the 4-5hr battery range. I sold my deck, because even at 7-9w, 800p 30fps cap, lowest settings, fsr performance, i was getting 2-2.5hrs of battery life at best for aaa games. Battery is farrr from "being there" even on the deck imo.

    1080p resolution on such a small screen?! Why people are still so obsessed about things that they wont see nor experience ...
    Considering how much output this hogs the same could be utilized to actually run things better and more things also save on battery life just by reducing the screen output.
    Even 720p or laptop notebook resolutions are overkill for such a small device.
    This was a thing for years now ever since 4K became a thing people bragging about having a 4K monitor even tho the size of the damn thing is like a tablet ... It's a waste of power and performance for such a small screen. For the same money you could buy a big screen 1080p monitor that actually utilize your PC capability and you don't waste electricity for nothing.

      I agree, I don't generally play PC games in 1080p on this. But an upscale of retro systems to 1080p is definitely noticeably sharper than 720p, and I also prefer the sharper text from 1080p when using it for Windows PC tasks or navigating menus. We're not going to get Steam Deck prices for a while. The Deck is cheap because Valve is able to sell them at cost or even at a loss since they can make up the difference with game sales. The Deck also uses a custom chip with a cheaper CPU paired with a better GPU. None of these other companies can sell at a loss or make a deal with AMD for custom chips.

    Don’t know if it’s relevant or not-but can you produce a piece exclusively exploring the difference between Windows and SteamOS in terms of sustained performance as the battery drains? Word on the street is that Windows handhelds suffer the typical Windows power tax when the battery percentage drops low enough, and I’m curious what kind of real-world implications that holds for actual play time. For example, is there a “cut-off” percentage at which the unit still functions but performs degrades enough to restrict higher tiers of gaming otherwise possible with more juice (or plugged into the wall)? Not sure if I’m articulating that clearly, but essentially I’m curious about how these handhelds are sustaining that advertised performance in the face of notorious power saving throttling, even when such options are turned off? Less a hardware comparison proper and more an OS comparison of power management and sustained performance?

      It's not about a specific % of battery as much as when you hit the point where you are draining more than what the battery can give. For example a 3.7v battery fully charged will give 4v and for most device it will work until it's down to 3.4v. I have an Odin Pro with Windows 11 installed. When I started gaming on it I would get 30min out of Skyrim before the screen would dim to minimum and performance would get terrible. At first I thought it was overheating but I realized that at 40-50% battery I was draining more than what the battery could do and Windows would go into a power saving mode to lower power consumption. An easy solution was to go in power settings and limit my CPU to 80% usage and lower screen brightness to 50% instead of the 65% that I used before. No more power saving problems after that until I was down to 10% battery.

If they end up offering it with a Snapdragon 888 or similarly powerful chipset that can play the entire GameCube catalog full speed at 2x resolution then I'd certainly be willing to fork over $500+ for something that like =)

    I feel like a bit of a n00b saying this. I've had a Steam Deck for about a year and I've never adjusted the TDP. Is the point JUST for battery? I mostly play 5-10 year old PC games that run great at max settings and when I play AAA titles from the last couple years I adjust the graphics to the highest settings that get at least 40fps. The battery can drain very quickly but I play mostly around the house. So the only reason to reduce the TDP would be if you travelled / were away from power sources?

    Just imagine if Sony took this sort of level of chip set and got good custom firmware out of it. They might even be able to get decent PS4 level playability running natively. The whole PS5 over wireless support on their new rumored handheld is just so unappealing. You can use other devices like your phone with a bluetooth controller to stream it already, so it seems really redundant if it's streaming only. But something that could natively play PS4 level? That would be amazing. O_o;

      I disagree. The better the resolution of a screen you have, the more options you have available as a consumer. The screen is by far the worst part of the steamdeck. Companies didn't start increasing the resolution and quality of their displays for nothing. Consumers love a crisp screen with good accurate colors that pop. And if you are near an outlet, you have an option to play at the 1080p resolution. How is that bad?
