I'm a 70 year old man, I have been in the construction business and mining equipment parts and maintenance. I've been in all kinds of situations with broken equipment. We had a dead axel on a D9 cat to break. We got the old one out and they wanted us to load the dozer on a truck and send it to press in a new dead axel. We emptied out a refrigerator and put the new dead axel in it wrapped it in burlap and dry ice. The next morning me and my partner Reggie loaded it in the bed of a pickup and headed to where the dozer was broken down. Mechanics at the dozer put two rosebud torches heating up the frame hole for the dead axel. We had the old dead axel hanging from a crane line. Reggie and I got the new axel out of the pickup carried the maybe 10 feet to the dozer. Set it in place and used the old dead axel to hit this one on the end. Two taps with the old axel and it was in place and you could hear the metal bump and stretch as the axel warmed up. We were all pleased with ourselves the way you guys were please with yourself. Good job.

I am grateful that everything went so smoothly for this recovery and also grateful to see nature being cleaned up. I know nothing about towing really except what I have seen here on TH-cam. While it was obviously not needed, I am surprised you didn't rig up a vehicle behind the towed excavator to use as brakes. Then again, if that happened no one would have seen an excavator jump! lol...

A large diesel/hydraulic power unit on a trailer, with long, large diameter hoses, could be hooked up directly to the machines own hydraulics and just towed behind. Might save a lot of time not having to get the machines own engine running to use the hydraulics.
