Ιt was done long before from Tamron in the 80's-90's. It was the adaptall-2 mount. You could attach any Tamron lens to any camera. Adapters for adaptall mount lenses are still made today for digital cameras. That's how i can still use some wonderful lenses like the 28-105/2.8, the 80-200/2.8, the 180/2.5, the 300/2.8 and the 400/4.0.
I was just going to comment the same thing. 👍 The main reason why the Adaptall-2 system was stopped is the popularization of AF, which required electronic communication between the lens and the camera for its operation and from what I see this system has the same limitation.
Watched this with great interest. Kind of reminds me of the Tamron Adaptal. You bought a generic Tamron lens and then purchased the adapter to fit your camera that fit VERY securely to the Lens. Right now I am using a 28mm Vintage Tamron adaptal lens with a Konica adapter on it. Purchased a Konica to Micro 4/3 rds adapter and now I can use all of my Tamron Adaptal lenses on my modern mirrorless camera !!!
There are Tamron adapters to any modern system, check out K&F concept. Without need to source those original vintage rings that are hard to find. But if you happen to have another adapter there might be some local ad for sale of adaptal to your existing adapter. Like i see one for Canon FD right now where i live. From thee looks of it - their vintage zoom lenses can give run for the money to any of the modern plastic kit lenses. Models like 17a and 09a are lightweight and also parfocal, which is terrific for video work as well as for photo. Focus peaking makes these lenses so easy to work with. There was also another manufacturer with similar mount system - Komura.. But no modern adapters as far as i can tell.
We are again, ‘Re Inventing the Wheel’! Tamron SP did this 30+ years ago! Indeed, I had couple of Tamron lenses, with Olympus OM mount! It was a good then, it’s still a good idea - however, watch out for the quality of the lens! I prefer to use OEM lenses!
I just came across your channel yesterday. You are doing a great job. I have watched at least 10 of them in one night. Will be one of my favorite channels.
Lenses can be adapted to fit, but the features of the lenses made for a specific line of camera. Stabilization on one of the newer Sony cameras, for example, can only be realized with newer e-mount lenses. It is not just a matter of optics.
tamron have released a similar system in 1973 , called Tamron Adaptall the second iteration of this system came in 1979 : the adaptall 2 i didnt know it was more comun on cinema lens. very interesting ! and it make sens !
So cool! I am kinda shocked that all the low volume lens manufacturers don't use some kind of universal removable lens mount system like this. Seems a shame for a company like Voigtlander to pick and chose which mounts to make native lenses for because they cant afford to make all the different versions. When they could do something like this, because I know they could afford to make all the adapters. I have a couple of their M mount lenses adapted to my L mount camera, but it means I dont get the Meta Data that a Sony user would get. Imagine how much better a system like this is for a retailer.
Thank you for very helpful videos. I just purchased the Viltrox booster for for EF to E Mount. What good Canon zoom lenses would be the best for video and photo?
But the PL mount is a finished lens 🤷 Additionally you can get positive locking EF adapters too which completely fix the EF adapted wiggle. I think people might get the wrong idea just by some of your phrasing which may propagate misinformation.
I corrected the EF statement with a text overlay saying just what you said (locking EF adapters available). For sure the PL mount is it's own finished mount, but what I'm highlighting here is that most people are now buying PL as a universal lens mount, and will never use them on a PL Camera. In fact, most PL lenses are now being bought for this purpose. The fact that the PL mount lens actually sits inside PL Cameras, and therefore adapters, means the lens gains very little bulk by adding the adapters. So yeah, it's totally its own mount, but speaking to the manufactures, most PL lens are now being used on cameras that are not PL mount cameras, and treated as a swappable lens mount.
It affects manual focus. There can be movement in the lens mounts before the focus moves, the play creates a focus lag. It’s a common issue, but I should have provided more detail.
Gosh, the locking mechanism looks just like a good old Canon FD or FL locking ring... probably one of the best mounts, ever, for mechanical and optical stability, since the locking mechanism has its moving parts separate from the mechanical interface to the lens.
Thank you for bringing these new tools to my attention. My reservation is you don't mention their LIMITATIONS. In reality, NOTHING is PERFECT. From what I know, all other existing lens adapters have slow auto focus speed compared to the native lenses. I hope somebody will compare the focus speed of this Nisi new adapters with other brands.
Yes, this was an oversight on my behalf. These are cine lenses and manual focus only, I should have mentioned this in the video, but I did add it to the description. This has been a problem for me, in making these videos, I use manual focus lenses most of the time now, so forget to even mention this in the videos. I know it's a big deal to most people, so I need to make and effort to remember to cover it.
The Athena. are killer. love them. I Have a Canon R5c. so I got the RF mount. wondering if Should switch to PL... I just got some rehoused PL Russian lenses. sigh. Maybe the Athena guy might hook me up. I saw him at NAB he rememberd me... FUCK. lol. I do love them so. got the 5 lens kit. btw. they are spectacular
Its being made more difficult. Now manufacturers are lazy with lens design and have the hide to sell us zooms with F8 apertures at say 400mm. They build lens correction algorithms that only work with their own lenses. They do not want you buying 3rd party lenses. Nikon is notorious for this in the Z lineup.
For sure! PL does have advantages over all of those mounts, as I covered in the video, and manufactures are making more and more lenses in the mount, so you can buy modern optics. I also have lots of vintages lenses, because I can move them between cameras, plus they are just fun.
i mean great video sure but calling this the lens that makes it happen is a bit wrong lol. cuz u just describe the advantage of a pl locking adapter compared to a non locking and stating that ef always has play (mostly correct but there are locking ef adapters too)
@@TelstarFirst I agree. Last year I decided to get back into photography. I'd used Pentax M-42 and K-mount back in the seventies and eighties so I bought a Pentax K-70 and was surprised that there were no aftermarket lenses to fit it.
@@jamesmeader6539 What some of these young lads don't realise is that back in the '70s the k-mount was the most popular fitting in the world and was used by those manufacturers who didn't have their own. So much easier with modern electronics and the much longer focal plane- flange distances than with SLR in the 1980s with the Tamron adaptall lenses

There is, not one made by NSI, but they do exist.
