What’s behind the ‘alarming’ fall in electric car sales?

  • A drop in new electric cars has been branded as 'alarming' by a transport consultant.
Sales of new electric cars are down 14.2% in the first three months compared to last year, despite the overall new car market growing by 8%.
It comes amid ongoing criticism of a lack of charging points around the country.
Transport Consultant Conor Faughnan told The Pat Kenny Show the drop-off is surprising.
"EV (Electric Vehicle) sales are down overall in the context when overall car sales are up," he said.
"General sales in the first quarter of 2024 [are] up by around 8%, but the EV - and specifically the pure battery electric vehicle - the market share for that has dropped by about 14%.
"That's a little alarming and you wonder what's causing that."

What do you class as “long charging times”. ? Time for a widdle and a sarnie will add another 80 / 90 miles of range in my ‘slow charging’ EV. From 0% to 100% is 6.5 hours. Whilst I sleep.
The range doesn’t “fluctuate hugely”! 328miles Avg range. from April to November then 295 miles Avg. range from November to the start of May. That is just over 10%! That is not what I call a “huge fluctuation “. Also, ICE cars lose range in the cold and wet.
Your ICE vehicle not paying Road Fund Licence then, next year?
EVs are NOT much heavier. A top of the range Mini is heavier than my car and so are quite a few diesel and petrol SUVs.
My tyres are no bigger than the typical SUV. And smaller than a Range Rover.
Again, it is a myth that EV tyres need replacing more regularly. Confirmed by Quick Fit and I think they might know. They do cost more than budget makes for ICE.
My insurance was not “very expensive “ compared to my previous low spec ICE. And it is held for three years. It also was easy to source.
No point in you “keep going “ as all your information/ knowledge of EVs is garnered from the legacy MSM and anti EV clickbait grifters on TH-cam.
It would be better if you based your ‘thoughts’ (and I use that term it’s loosest sense) on the experiences of those who actually own and drive EVs.

The sales for 2 main reasons:-
      - massive corporate push by companies for all company cars to be electric
      - you go into any dealership now to buy a new car, and electric cars are pushed into your face with very few other options
However you ask the vast majority of people if it’s an electric car they want? And the answer will be no.

Conor Faughnan has always talked out of both sides of his mouth when it comes to EVs. One minute, he is with the government, and the next, he is with the people. Whatever way the wind blows. The reason why he didn't go into the mining of EVs is because he knew the backlash he would get.
The lithium - ion batteries evs use are large and require several different materials like lithium and cobalt. These materials require a lot of energy to extract and re-purpose into lithium-ion batteries. Cobalt is considered the highest material supply chain risk for EVs in the short and medium term. In 2019, the production of lithium-ion batteries consumed 65% of the global production of lithium and cobalt. Producing electric car batteries results in at least 70% more carbon emissions. A single electric car’s battery contains more cobalt than 1,000 smartphone batteries. The mining of lithium is not a green activity as when an electric car rolls of the production line, it has already been responsible for more than 25,000 lbs. of CO2, the amount of making an ICE car is just 16,000 lbs.of CO2.
Volvo has said that the emissions from the production of electric cars are far higher than a petrol/diesel equivalent. The Swedish car maker said that over a car’s lifetime the electric version will eventually become greener if you cover between 30,000 and 68,400 miles which takes between 4 and 9 years for the average UK motorist. Based on the latest UK driving statistics, average annual mileage is 7,400 miles. This means it will take 9 years of ownership before the EV is greener than a car with an internal combustion engine. New research from scientists now say that it takes 50,000 miles or to travel twice around the equator in an electric car to match the carbon footprint of a petrol car because of the massive amount of energy consumed during the production process. In a recent comparison, 14 tonnes of CO2 were produced during the manufacture of a fossil fuel-powered Volvo XC40 compared to 24 tonnes produced during the manufacture of an electric Polestar 2.

The bug bear I have with all the EV bs is that the time to recharge compared with filling up at a pump is just not in the same universe. If I choose to drive from Dublin to Donegal & back in a day I can at the moment in a petrol or diesel car. If I need to fill up, it will take no more than 10mins max, depending on fuel level. A 10min charge would likely not get any EV very far, certainly not to the next charge point.
EV is not the answer. I would like choice. I'd like to see fuel cell cars & hydrogen pumps. Simply because you get more range & refill time is about the same as it is now with petrol or diesel.

    • @geoffersvoiceofreason2534

Dublin to Donegal, round trip, is 272 miles. Most modern EVs are capable of doing that distance without recharging. Also, how long are you spending in Donegal? Are you turning straight around and going back. Charge at a destination charger when there, if need be.
10 min of charge, on a rapid charger, for my car, will add approx 70 / 80 miles of range. I think you will find in the U.K. and Ireland, there will be plenty of chargers in that distance. Do you drive for over three hours straight? Most sensible people will stop for a ‘comfort’ break and possibly a bite to eat. A 10 to 15 minute stop, so just plug in whilst you do that.
I don’t think you have researched this topic at all but like most anti EV types you just listen to the anti EV clickbait grifters.

ELECTRIC CARS AND THE TECHNICAL ISSUE CAUSING SALES RESISTANCE !!!
The major issue is the recharging time. But if a DYNAMO &/or an ALTERNATOR were included, car range could become THOUSANDS OF MILES, and it could be months before an actual recharge was necessary. Why don't they install such equipment ? Quite obviously because when everyone is using Electric Cars, Governments will want to add TAX to recharging, to recoup the tax they will loose on current fuel sales !!!

I am not convinced with the current electric cars from a fire safety concern, range, cost of ownership which would include tyre costs, insurance costs, depreciation losses, initial costs.
Another concern I have relates to the emissions relating to the building of these cars, the environmental impacts of mining the material for the batteries, the power to charging the batteries which comes from fossil fueled power plants.
It took us over 120 years to improve the internal combustion engine, so let's see how long all electric cars take.

    • @geoffersvoiceofreason2534
      @geoffersvoiceofreason2534 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@liquidusblue Well, that’s not quite true. An internal combustion engine will loose efficiency the more miles it covers over its lifetime. And bare I mind a petrol engine is only approximately 30% efficient brand new.
Recent studies have shown that Tesla batteries are down to about 90% efficiency after 169,000 miles (that’s about 20 years of life if driven the U.K.s average mileage per year. That still gives over 20l miles range on a short range Tesla. Although age does have an effect as does how it is charged. It certainly doesn’t “shrink every time it is driven”. If the vehicle is looked after (as with ICE cars) i.e. don’t “accelerate hard”. Don’t charge more than 90% unless embarking on a long journey and don’t do unnecessary rapid charging, the battery will, easily, last the lifetime of an average car. (150,000 to 200,000 miles or around 12 years)

    • @liquidusblue
      @liquidusblue 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't believe the drop off is as severe in a badly serviced ICE. 30% efficiency is up for debate. The wasted energy into heat from an ICE is quite useful in winter.
Also How many times has the electricity for an EV changed forms. Is it from gas or solar (emissions elsewhere vehicle). Even with solar. This is mostly hydrocarbons for all the resins and electronics. Same with wind. All carbon fibres and resins in the matrix. That said at least this way you aren't burning hydrocarbons.
It's not as clear cut when you consider all the lithium mining etc.
I think they would do better. If they weren't pushed so much. Just let EVs exist. Some people will buy. Some won't. But no mandates. If they are better people will buy. The market will decide without government meddling.
