FREE BOAT! Well nothing's free really. In this series I have a 10' Livingston I acquired for free. It had No Title and massive holes. No Motor, and so dirty.
Let's get this thing back to its former glory!
Nice little boat. You’re doing a decent job, you scarfed the edges around the holes good, and patching both sides makes sense. Only things I would do different; use chop-strand mat (it will sand much smoother), wipe around sanded areas with acetone, brush some resin on the glass you sanded before putting on patches will help it stick, then wet it down and apply probably three layers two outside one in. But you got a nice little boat for free and are doing a good job! If you have Tractor Supply in the area their epoxy paint Majic with hardener rolls on great and can be thinned if you want to spray and is much cheaper than gel coat, looks great and about as tough as gel coat. Good work, keep it up and hope you catch some fish out of it.
Thank you so much for the feedback. Yeah I am winging this, and trying to do this on the cheap, that is functional and looks ok. I will grab some chop-strand mat. I got acetone, good idea! I know your supposed to use some kinda cleaner dewaxer, acetone is easy. I sanded the whole boat by hand really well with I think 60 or 80 grit. I will wipe it down in acetone before painting. Thank you for the product drop Majic, I bought only a quart of Total Boat Gel Coat without Wax hoping I would paint most of it, because its sooo expensive! I am going to roll it on and then use a paintbrush to (tip it) I think they call it, where you run vertical lines in your roll on job. I just found a Suzuki DT30 motor on FB market place that comes with controls for $200 so I am stoaked and plan on installing that. I am not sure if I want to do a center console or a right hand drive. My goal is pleasure boating and basic fishing (nothing fancy) I might also get a Bimini top, or possibly fabricate one out of I am thinking 2" foam board covered in Poor Mans Fiberglass. If I do a hard top if I cannot find a cheap new Bimini. I am going to do boat seat cushions myself which Ive done before, cheaper than buying new. I kinda want to do a level floor across it but I am worried about it being tippy on the sides with a high center. Not sure yet, but these are some of the ideas I have.
@@Jeep-Creep Sounds like fun and a good plan. One caution, the waxless gel coat will not fully cure and dry on its own (it’s for laminating) so once you get 2 or 3 layers you will need to get either: 1) some PVA to spray over the gel coat so it hardens, or 2) wax additive to mix in with your last coat so it will harden, or 3) a pint of gel coat with wax. None of this is hard to do, but it keeps pushing the cost up - that’s why Majik is a good option on a budget project. Have fun!
@@MaineGreenCrabs oh man thank you for seeing my amature mistakes. So I thought from what I saw YouTubing was without wax is the way to go. As you said it’s a laminate without wax. I really wanted to do a one and done method. Should I just get Total Boat with Wax after returning my without wax. Is that one and done? I thought the catalyst MEKP would harden to a paint like, non tacky, finish. Or am I just better off with the Majik product? I am totally new to gel coats
@@Jeep-Creep Yes you use MEKP in both waxed and waxless. But gel coat is actually designed to work as base in molds. So it will not completely harden and will stay tacky unless it is completely cut off from the atmosphere (mold on one side fiberglass on other) so when you use waxless gel coat out of a mold, you need something over it to create an atmospheric barrier on top. When gel coat with wax kicks (from MEKP) it will cause the wax to rise to surface and create that barrier. Other way to do it is with PVA sprayed in fine mist over the surface. The super cheap (and likely to fail) way is lay some cellophane over it and press out all air. One coat of gel coat is probably not enough unless you’re ok with it looking a little wavy. Dont fret its a free boat almost anything you do is an improvement and gets you closer to the water. 👍🏻
@@MaineGreenCrabs I bought the no wax on Amazon, so I am returning it today. Going to purchase the With Wax version. You saved me a bunch of time and money so far, thank you! I love your perspective as its similar to mine, not trying to win beauty contests, just want something sea worthy and ok looking on a dime! I actually prefer things that have no where to go but improve quality wise, vs having something really nice and new you are afraid to use.
I have discovered that it is good to have a few holes in the top of the gunwales for rainwater drainage when storing these Livingston’s upside down.
Yeah it’s a great idea for drainage
Clean it for what reason? sand it all down. repair the fiberglass, than fairing more sanding than gel coat. roll on gel coat or spray it. same as the interior
