    I will never understand companies that pay their employees the literal minimum before it becomes illegal, but expect you to put so much effort into sales that only benefit them. If you’re gonna pay me the minimum, I should be able to give you minimum effort.

      Empty Pockets Jobs You do know that a lot of retail/minimum wage jobs don’t even offer raises or a way to move up in the company? At my current job if you aren’t happy with what you get, they just hire someone else. The turnover is terrible. Also, why would you work hard for a business that doesn’t appreciate you?

    Reminds me of when I worked at my local theater. I gave it my all and never got what I deserved. I was the best of the best and I was treated exactly like the teenagers there that did the very minimum. So I quit right before the worst time of the year for the theater and told my boss to enjoy the next 3 weeks in holly jolly hell.

    I never pre-order anything because there's no point.
    Are you telling me call of duty or pokemon is going to run out of copies? I only pre-order if it's a niche game or it comes with something physical like a collector's edition.
    If they DID run out, just go to the walmart next door.

    i think for everything wrong with gamestop and the way they run their stores and the way they treat their employees all stems from one HUGE problem, the higher ups, the suits and ties, so to speak. they are just greedy business people they have no interest in gaming and they dont care how hard they are on their employees its just "make us money now" and that mentality is going to be what buries them.

    This is such a huge stressor for my boyfriend, he was getting shit a while back for his “numbers” on these types of goals being too low, even though he’s a fantastic employee who sells a ton of stuff to people!! And the worst part is the higher ups were complaining about his numbers while simultaneously his store was BARELY GIVING HIM HOURS. And wouldn’t you know it, this was all around November. Thank god his managers are on his side.

    I mean Im working at gamestop part time right now and man oh man has the company gotten stupid with their goals. Use to be a manager way back in 05 but now as a part time GA. Your only complaint I dont get is used on christmas. I've never onced cared and I know kids sure as hell dont.
    Every sales job does this stuff now. The difference is how much better some companies do it than others. Best Buy's selling culture is about a billion times better than Gamestop because it works on realistic numbers and selling real benefits to people and not forcing worthless crap. I've worked for both. Also bestbuy pays on average double the hourly pay for gamestop without any of the stress.

    • @CtheDead209-zt8tj
      @CtheDead209-zt8tj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but best buy doesn't use realistic goals I worked there for a few years as full timer in charge of my dept part timers. We would have days usually midweek where we may get 10 customers from open to close with the goal of 150k simply put not realistic they keep those high goals so they can have reason to terminate people whenever they want they don't set goals based on location and store traffic period there's only 2 ways to go in retail leave on your own terms like I did where they are calling everyday wanting you to come back because when you left so did 20-30k a day in sales went with you or you wait around for your store to downswing and they lay you all off or fire you that's the nature of retail and also why there is no future in it when the economy is good sales are up when it's low sales fall off it's how the world works it was a fun job but also a waste of time. I left went into an actual job field and was shocked when I realized that my income was pouring in 6x more and I couldn't be happier

    • @Clesarie
      @Clesarie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No offense to you but, maybe you just werent good at your job. I easily brought in 100k in sales goes with upt of around 5 items and very high branded payments. I didnt go a single month without being green. However you could just be in an area without the foot tracks and I know that feeling all to well. Goals normally are set as a general blanket and don't take into account the realism of different areas profits and trafic.

    I honestly don't understand how gamestop even stays in business with Best buy and Amazon's game deals now. The last game I bought at gamestop was bloodborne and I only bought it at gamestop because I was eating in a shopping center that had one. I pretty much buy all my games on amazon.

    This was years ago as I haven't shopped at Gamestop in a while but I remember each year I'd renew my power up rewards card and they asked if I wanted the magazine. I like reading the magazine while dropping a deuce so I ordered it but the last two times I renewed they never sent me any of the magazines. Effin gamestop.

    I have a lot of the same issues at my Big Lots. They want you to sign up customers for the rewards cards, our credit cards, and if you're getting furniture, it's 10x worse. One of my coworkers, who has been there for years, got yelled at for not signing people up for rewards. Why? Because you have to have an email to sign up and some people don't have that so the district manager tells her not to say you need an email and sign them up anyway. But the thing is, you can't. It is required. He expects us to use a fake email just to increase numbers.

    I would never go all digital. If all digital games were $49.99 rather than $59.99, then maybe I would. Its common sense that digital games cost almost nothing to sell, as opposed to physical game discs. I used to say this back when manuals and posters were included in the box, as well as box art. Although less manuals have been included(really loved manuals), I still prefer to get physical for the box and to resell down the road if needed. Digital games can never be sold. Shit I have 300 downloads in the PS3 store, but they don't transfer over and I would have to rebuy the same exact games that are on PS4 too. With a disk I can sell it and get the new gen version if I so choose to.

    In November of 2016, I used to work at a retail store called f.y.e. There is a system where you need to sell a backstage pass with every transaction you do and sell magazines with it. The backstage pass is a 10% discount card that deducts the price of all items you are buying. It’s free for 30 days. After that, the company charges your card 10.99 a month. Now here’s where I started to hate working there. Similar to the power up card, I myself had to reach a goal of selling those cards, otherwise my manager would get on my ass for not selling enough. Same with the magazines, had to reach a goal. I wasn’t selling a lot in the first 3 weeks because I truthfully gave all the details the customer needed to know but they just didn’t want it. My manager (who is and probably still is a crackwhore) would lie to the customers about the backstage pass telling the customers they will not be charged at all. That’s why her sales were really good. After a while, I had upset customers coming in and telling me “I thought the discount card was free” and “you guys are liars, I had money deducted from my card” all because of my stupid ass manager. Like a good employee, I kindly informed them about the backstage pass and guided them on how to cancel it before the next charge. My backstage pass goals were really good in December because of Christmas and people wanted to save money. In January, my sales started going down . My manager would get in trouble by the corporate manager because of the sales and for that, the employees would get in trouble. My sales were bad as usual but I didn’t care at all since I just wanted the money and be out. We didn’t get commission from anything. I got payed minimum wage so I gave minimum effort on selling the backstage passes. In March, my manager got fired by the corporate manager after finding out about her shoplifting at Claire’s lol. Corporate manager also smelled weed in the back room of the store so that was a bonus. My dumbass crackwhore manager was a drug dealer too, who happened to have weed in her purse the day corporate came and visited lmao. To cut the ending short, the store was under new management around April and I got fired in July because I gave my friends my employee discount. My assistant managers were cool as fuck and a couple of co workers too. I left out a lot of details because I felt like this post was long lol.

    It annoys me the fuck when I buy a game, new or used, and I always get asked the same question "Would you like a game warranty to cover the game in case in gets scratches?" $2 or $3, I don't care how cheap it is. The thought of being asked this question, especially when you're a regular and an avid gamer, baffles me. I keep all my disc games in cases. I don't have discs lying around. I don't use them as coasters nor have my fingers on the surface. Why the hell would you ask me about disc protection? What if the game I have is a rare game? Are you guys gonna replace the disc with another copy or just buff the disc and make it worse?

    Jeez, the GameStops in my town must really give 0 shits, since most interactions with customers never go beyond "Hi, can I help you find anything?" "No thanks, I'm just looking." "Oh, alright. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you." The only time I needed special help with upgrading my 3DS memory card, the guy just offered a $2 SD card. No "Sure you don't want a new system?" or "Oh you have a 3DS? Want to pre-order Random JRPG You Don't Want that comes with the free keychain?" just the thing I came in for. Shocking!

    I think I worked at a "unicorn" Gamestop. My manager just didn't give a fuck about numbers and what not. Hell, he was out in back always smoking a joint, my location was super laid back and chill. We just sold shit and whim, didn't worry about used games vs. new, the member card and what not. After he quit, we just all kind of scattered. Like, I didn't quit, but I wasn't fired either. As a matter of fact I'm still in the system apparently and it's been about 8 years...

    Lots of weakly managed companies rely on 'all-stick' management because they are unwilling to use any 'carrot' techniques.
    And they'll pretend that they don't have the authority.. like 'hey boss, if I meet three of these goals today, can I take the next two thursdays or weekend off?" the boss will be, well Stewart... if it were up to me (and it is) then I'd totally let you do that.

I never received the coupons and now all my points we're gone. 8 years here I'm telling you. I have tried calling GameStop customers service and after 3 hours of hold multiple times I gave up. @9:00 - You pretty much answer it at around 11:24. Same as how telemarketing firms can exist: Companies find their niche, and some aim (or fall into) the lower end of the barrel.
    The maddening part though is what you describe with the goals structure that's enforced by management: Lower tier company trying to play as though they're fostering some kind of entrepreneurial, up-from-the-bootstraps kind of work environment; "Be serious about succeeding, or else." Or... else what, exactly. Is a weird psychological something that tends to go on in managerial, at all levels: They realize the larger picture at some point, but then create this game to lie to themselves about their - and the company's - station in life. Which in itself isn't necessarily bad; crappy situations may call for personal motivation of some kind, any kind, to either succeed or get by. The problem is that plenty of others get dragged along in this weird, Tony Robbins style corporate crusade.
    Is probably corporate's attempt to placate their shareholders and the stock market with the thought that they're a business that's reaching for the stars!... when in fact everyone else who actually gets on with the work are just trying to get things done, reasonably. Tower of Babel vs. a farm.

    I worked as a shift manager at gamestop during the launch year for the x1 and ps4, that alone made me hate the gaming industry and it was entirely due to the customers who were upset that they couldn't get their consoles as though it was my fault.
    As for the insane expectations, I told my store manager and district manager that we can push stuff on people all you want us to, they aren't going to buy it if they don't want it and signing people up for memberships multiple times with different typed versions of their names/phone numbers/emails is unethical. I didn't work there long after that.

    Best types of companies to sell for would be insurance sales, auto sales (preferably a strong brand like Toyota or Honda), cell phone sales (usually the best paying ones are working directly for a wireless carrier), home improvement (roofing, windows, siding), real estate, possibly some furniture stores (be careful of over staffing issues and make sure the store has strong traffic), and a few other niche industries. A good sales position will reward top producer with a yearly income range starting at $45,000 per year to a limitless top end (some sales jobs cap your commission which is complete BS).

    I don't know if GameStop works on a manager bonus system, but I've worked at a company that does. One major reason such companies set absurd goals is to avoid having to pay the manager a full bonus. Set unrealistic - or better yet, contradictory - goals, then use failure to meet them as a justification for not giving the manager the pay he was led to expect.

    I currently work at Gamestop as a Senior Guest Advisor.
    I can tell you, the goals have only gotten more strict. Preorders have extended to not only games now, but collectibles. We’re expected to encourage people to preorder things like Pop Vinyls, but unlike our games, Pops at Gamestop don’t have set release dates, only tentative ones. This means that you have to sell people on products that they don’t even know when they’ll get. And to make matters worse, because we only hold products for 48 hours after release, most people don’t even pick up their collectibles because they’re unaware of their release.
    This means that cancelations have only become more prominent. And pro goals have risen to 20%. That means that 1/5 customers must subscribe to our paid rewards cards. And with a heavy focus on selling collectibles, it can be hard to sell rewards cards on products you’ll get no benefit from having.

    This reminds me of my Macy's days and offering the Macy's Star Rewards card. The managers were constantly on your back every hour. "Did you open a new account yet? Did you open a new account yet?" I hated doing it, and most people were annoyed because you had to ask them if they wanted a Macy's card every time they came in. Of course, they had quotas you had to reach every week or you'd get a talking to and a warning from your manager. I had to do the greet and escort the customer thing too, and that annoyed me and the customer, because they didn't want to be bothered and I didn't want to do it. I had to do it though because the managers watched you like a hawk to make sure you did it.

Then immediately after i said that to him he responded with " Oh wait .... let me check in the back and see if we got new ones delivered recently " . Sure enough he walks out with a new ps4 box ready to go. Of course the guy knew they had them new but just trying to hawk the used ones........ damn snakes. People really have to learn how to outsmart them and beat them at their own game literally.

    At the moment I work at a Gamestop Prestige. Hearing you talk about the gpgs for switch and ds games made me a small bit confused. At my store its not just scratch protection its full on anything happens we replace it same day if we do have it in stock (otherwise its checking out the warehouse). My managers always say for anything and to do it for those especially since they have that exposed metal bits. Of course if you take care of the games its very rare they stop working. But from my own idiot experience i have about 5 completely defective 3ds games. @everyone else in the comments: do other gamestops not replace it? Ive done tons of gpg swaps on defective carts. -not to say the gpgs arent still nonsense or to shit on other gamestops for not being my store im just curious!-

    • @Hexium_Vexium
      @Hexium_Vexium 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think my store's a Prestige store; pretty sure it's not. Anyway, yes, we do an even swap on defective/damaged games if they have the GPG. Fun story to go with this, as an example: he bought a cheap game, bought the GPG, said he was going to destroy the disc overnight.
      Came in the next morning, said he'd gotten really drunk, one thing led to another, and he'd melted the disc in his microwave. We replaced it for him because he had the GPG.
      The only time we don't do a GPG swap is if we don't actually have the game in-store at that moment, but that's not really a common occurrence and we take steps to get a replacement on its way to us ASAP.

I can also see a in store invite only employee party. Have like a day where the higher ups plan a employee party & for those who are invited can take advantage of the special promos of that day. Give you example...invited guess will engage in game tournaments , win prizes, & take advantage of special offers while the associates get a day to unwind, still get paid for that day but meeting your goals party will give the customers & the Sales Associates a chance to connect & build current to new relationships.

    I've had the PowerUp Rewards card for years, but I recently switched over to the Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked. I got so sick of Gamestop attempting to sell me used/opened games as new. Several times I either ordered new games on their site or asked for new games in the store, and the games I received were not sealed. I took the opened games back and got my money refunded each time, because there's no way in hell I'm paying the new game price for a game that's been opened. A word of advice to Gamestop - If you're going to sell opened games, then DISCOUNT THEM AS USED.... My advice to customers - Don't let Gamestop get away with this bullshit. If you pay for a new game, and they try to give you one that's been opened, TAKE IT BACK AND GET A REFUND. I think part of the reason why Gamestop keeps doing this shit is because they get away with it 95% of the time, and people are either clueless as to what new means, or too lazy to take these opened games back for a refund. Gamestop is basically banking on the chance that a high percentage of their customers will be too lazy to take these opened games back. Gamestop is on their last leg, and for the moment they are surviving solely by taking advantage of kids and their clueless parents, who don;t know any better. They get ripped off with trade-ins, and then pay new game prices for used/ open games. Sad but true.

    They only printed stuff out at the check out area but yeah i knew there was something fishy with that power up rewards thing, saying i saved so much money when i knew i hadn't really shopped there that much previously. so a big hint that they were pulling those numbers from somewhere else, interesting to know that it was coming from the magazine, which I am kind of hoarding for some reason.... yeah not sure why

When I was last there, each transaction was like a fifteen minute thing about used games, pro cards, warranties on games, pre-orders, the website, and add-ons. I mean, sure it was annoying on my end, but when a two customer line is a 30 minute wait because I'm supposed to argue with every customer about why they should just keep spending money... I think that game stop has a policy of writing people up for being a " people person". I got "ambushed" by lp and my dm asking me about "fraud" because I gave a lady a free xb1 and a PRP because she had been back twice replacing two TWO different redurbished consoles.
    I asked "How do we retain people coming in when we sell garbage from the ROC? (Refurbishment Operations Center).
    The LP guy goes "You have been with us for a while now and I have seen a lot of people who feel like thet are not getting where they want within the company and so thet try and 'get back'at the company." Soo then I asked if that were the case and I wanted gamestop ro just lose money why I would have refused to take the $100 bills with identical serial numbers toward the Ps4 the ass wanted to buy last week? 🤔
    They kept it up, implying that I was committing fraud by being friendly to people who had gotten screwed so i handed my DM my keys and left.
    Now I am kinda screwed cus I have a disability that makes it really hard to just go get a job and work anywhere. 😥

      Goodwill has a program to help people with disabilities get jobs. They helped me when I thought I wouldn't have a chance and would have to get on disability. Now I work at Menards and it's going great so far! See if you have employment help in your area, and I don't mean the ones where you just hand them your info and wait for them to call you, people you meet with every week that will teach you how to answer interview questions and help you look for jobs you can do despite your disability.

      Sam Hem I found a job with Advance Auto Parts. Its going well ans most people are really cool. I am getting full time hours but I would like to make more on the hour because I would like to have a life at some point. Its not easy having to live with Mom as a man my age... but I guess its not my fault. I'm doing the best I can. Hopefully if I work hard I can get a raise or promotion or both. 🤔

      That's great! I hope you get a promotion so you can live on your own. I also live with one of my parents (dad), and the only hope I have of moving out any time soon is to rent a house with friends, blargh.

    Hey Fanta, just wanted to say I watch your videos all the time. I think you have really great hindsight, I just quit GameStop at the beginning of this year. Some things you say aren't completely correct, but mostly you have it spot on. Keep doing what you do man, I love looking forward to your videos. (I really like you showing what beer you drink )

      Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos Jebediah! If I say anything inaccurate, it could be because what I'm saying is based on what it was like several years ago when I worked there.

    I have not much at GameStop for awhile. I use to shop at GameStop in the 360 ps3 era and they had a game card for $5 to get 10% for used games which as ok. I did get preorders sometimes at the time. But they did push preorders a bit too much. I also shopped at Best Buy for games when they had more games.
