I work in the staffing industry. These retailers are terrified of their workers unionizing. So they hire and promote genuine basket cases and assholes that are just functional enough to be a manger, but not enough to be a real human being. This creates a miserable work experience that promotes very high employee turnover. With high turnover you can't unionize because by the time a union rep has handed out his materials and is ready to ask for a vote, everyone he's contacted no longer works at the company and he has to start over, because the process can take 6 mo to a year and the average length of employment at these places is about 3-4 months. McDonald's, and probably other fast food chains, use similar tactics. I find the practice disgusting, myself. There should be no reason at all that working at a simple retail store should be anything less than pleasant with the only drama ever coming from rude/unhappy customers. The mind games and utter incompetence of these low level managers is unacceptable ethically speaking, but desirable from the standpoint of upper management that know it will prevent unionization.
    Now hiring: complete dicks
    inquire within
Management Positions Available - especially for control freaks

That's not how the companies see it, at least not with low-skilled industries like retail and fast-food.

Nah man it's not some conspiracy by tons of companies to all hire bad managers. The reason this happens is because most of these stores are franchises so the "managers" are really just low-level supervisors. The "owner" of the store is really a manager and doesn't control all aspects of his store. Sure, he is earns income off the store's residual profit, but the corporation owns the land, the brand, and he technically leases the employees from the corporation. So he is an owner in name only, and the manager is a manager in name only.
So the store "owner" and the corporation are the only ones who care about the store's profitability because only they get a chunk of the residual profit. But the game is rigged so that the CORPORATION ALWAYS WINS! The corporation makes most of its money from renting the land to the franchisee, and they get and increase in net value when property prices increase. McDonald's is, in many ways, a real estate company that leases its properties to franchisees with tons of restrictions and regulations so they eat the franchisee's profit while also guaranteeing profit off the land and brand name of McDonald's.
So the store is ALWAYS strapped for cash because the store owner doesn't own the land he has his store on, or the brand he is using. He cannot take out a loan during tough times to keep the store afloat because he has no collateral. So the store must always be cash positive or else it closes FAST. So they must hire the CHEAPEST WORKERS POSSIBLE! They don't care if these workers ruin the brand name because the store "owner" doesn't even own the brand (talk about a conflict of interests). Also, the quality of workers barely even impacts the store's revenue, so, as an owner, why invest in better employees? No reason unless you get more money, but you don't. In fact, you do best to make a store profitable, hire anyone with a pulse to "manage" it (the store really runs itself and corporate provides you with idiot-proof training manuals), and open up as many stores as possible! The best franchisees are the ones with 10+ stores, not the ones with a single store that they've been the best store it could possibly be. These businesses suck because the "owners" are financially punished by improving the store and are GREATLY rewarded by owning 10+ stores that they never even set foot in. That, and the true owners of what really makes a store special, the brand and the physical space, are a multinational corporation whose officers never set foot in said store either.
This is why most of these managers are clueless - the economics of most of these retails chains business models force the franchisees to cut costs at all cost. So they hire all bottom-of-the-barrel people because that's all they can find! I know this because I have owned a franchise company and, believe me, I wanted to hire better workers, but I couldn't afford to. Corporate eats so much of your budget that it literally is not an option to pay a good manager $25+ an hour to do good work.
someone with any skills will not work at these stores because they don't pay well and they are over-regulated. That means little-to-no tips or cash under the table, which any low-level, low-wage employee knows can be a lot of your income. For example, why work for Wendy's at $10/hour when you can work for a contractor helping out at $15/hour cash under the table? Only if you need that sort of income for legal purposes (welfare, probation, etc.) or you just don't know any better.
McDonald's can really care less if their employees try to unionize. They have an 100 million-man supply of scabs to hire from in the USA. If all MCD's workers somehow unionized tomorrow they would all be fired, replaced within 2 weeks, and all franchisees could even be compensated for lost revenue, as this would be cheaper than permanently paying higher wages. Unionization would also cause corporate to accelerate its automation plans

ISINAT, I might agree with you except I've seen stores turn down people who I knew personally to be reliable and honest for positions, hiring instead complete jackwagons and there was no dispute over hourly rates, as it's all minimum wage. It's because they want to promote the jackwagon to manager shortly after they demonstrate they at least don't steal from the store. They don't want reliable honest people because those types have their lives organized and would be likely to organize against the owner should the issue ever come up. There's no explanation for choosing a schizoid 30 year old over a healthy energetic and smart college kid, when they would be both making minwage. These stores want the assholes and dicks of the world to work there. So they're either really dumb, or it's deliberate. Maybe it's some of both. It's worse at stores that actually have unions. The amount of petty rules and dogshit protocols you have to memorize are designed to make you want to quit, to deny the union long-term membership. The union doesn't care either because new workers have to pay dues without getting any benefits for a year, so they have no incentive to try to make it better. The union has its 25-year+ core members that it takes care of that make up about 30% of its membership, and everyone else is 1-year or less and it stays that way forever. Slowly their core members retire or just die and they wonder why no one wants to support them in a strike when they call for it. A 3 month member isn't going to hold a sign for $3 an hour so that the core members can keep benefits that the 3-monther won't see ever. The world is full of happy pleasant people that just need a bit of extra money. There's no reason to hire jackasses. I often like to cite In'n'Out Burger as a place that hires genuinely pleasant and sane people. They're always nice and seem very professional and congenial to each other too. I never hear about any drama from those places. It's possible, but some places just don't want the nice guys and girls, because they're still afraid of the organized labor boogey man.

    • @roscoedash6673

IDK man you never know why someone got hired. You see them as a dumbass schizo but they may have SLAYED that interview. I've hired shitty people before that looked amazing on paper. They were probably budding sociopaths so acting like a good worker for an interview is easy to them. Or maybe that idiot manager knows the boss, is family, the boss owes him a favor, etc. Also, the smart college kid may "over qualify" for a job, because they know it's not a good fit for him
To be fair, I can't comment on every store's business model. Some may be hiring shitheads because they want the turnover. Maybe they think their new employee training and onboarding systems are so stellar that they don''t need experienced workers, only cheap help. I can buy that some stores are doing that, but not all.
Just wanted you stop see the other perspective as well. Many of the store "owners" are franchisees that were basically lied to by Corporate. They make all these promises on how your business will grow and you'll make all this money. But if you don't read that entire damn FDD or hire a lawyer to read it then you don't realize all the hidden fees and rules to control you until it's too late. Get this - I was paying a hidden fee just to pay my workers, so Corporate even makes money cutting your check!

    Does anyone remember FuncoLand?
Got kicked out of the store when I was 14 for playing the mgs2 demo by some pimple ridden fuckface.
    “How old are you?”
    I’m 14 sir..
“Do you have a parent with you?”
My grandma is buying me devil may cry.
    He looks at her.
“Well you can’t play this game so you have to leave.”
So my 14 year old ass gets kicked out while they sell my grandma all the old bullshit CD repair kits they have in the store.
She fuckin came out with 3 CD polishers and 5 containers of that brown liquid they used to sell to clean cd scratches.
    She payed 145$
    Poor grandma..

I remember working at pinkberry early in the company's life, first one outside of hollywood/LA area, in the SFV. We broke all records for sales and was swamped for a good year with rushes around the block at least twice a day every day.
We had rules to follow from corporate. We got in trouble giving too many raspberries and blackberries. So we followed it and when people wanted more we would follow corporate protocol, basically they would need to pay like 75 cents or something like that for extra.
Then one of the owners came in with an email from a customer complaining about not getting enough raspberries according to him. This was a month or so after being chewed out for being too kind in giving those out. I brought up "so regardless of what we do we're going to be chewed out for giving too much raspberries or not enough." Because are we to follow corporate rules, or just give the customer what they want? Where's the consistency?
Needless to say I immediately got on the owners shit list, and within 4 months was forced to quit because "I had an attitude." A wave of people immediately quit when that happened, even though I told them not to just because of me. And within 6 months after it was so bad that basically everyone there quit because things got worse. Many customers went to other stores after I left, most notably Mike Tyson. I shit you not. Mike would come specifically to my store cause he liked me and I hooked him up on the Oreo topping.

If my daily activity isn't causing me to be a sweaty mess then it isn't that big a deal to skip a day. I was commenting on twice a day being a bit strange.

Life lesson to the youth... just because you work your ass off does not mean you will make a good manager or get promoted to a manager. You might be tossed aside for someone else.
And PS if there is a lot of manager changes... you'll get tossed soon when you get promoted as manager.
Take the position as manager to use on your resume for the next job. Keep your chin up!

I came across your stories over the weekend and literally watched a crap ton of content. Out of everything I have ONE question that nobody ever answered.
WHY DOES MADDEN GET SO MUCH HATE? Damn. Being from the Great White North- Canada I love NHL & NFL games. Out of every Gamestop ex employee stories always laugh at Madden fans. I was even lauged at by a really fat chick too busy talking about an RPG and laughed when I asked about Madden 13 when it came out. I actually knew the Manager and had her "Coached" and later she was fired. I enjoy "Gamer" games and traditional classic games from NES to SNES to Sega Genesis to Turbo Graphix 16 and Atari. I just don't appreciate and can't understand why most people who have these horror stories always give Madden games and gamers hate. Can you explain why in a video possibly?
Either way - love the channel. Definitely subbed. You're the man, Fanta.

    • @FANTAVISION
      @FANTAVISION  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks John! Might do a video covering the hate for it, but it really boils down to the laziness of EA. People see buying Sports games as stupid due to the fact that they come out every year with only slight changes and have the balls to not only charge $60, but they now have a lootbox microtransaction system in every game. NHL is super fun though, just wish it wasn't so monetized. Glad you are enjoying the content, and I'll be sure to keep pumping it out as much as I can!

I'm not going to mention exactly what store this guy worked at (because he might still work there) but a Store Manager at a Gamestop in Virginia once offered to reimburse me and pay $160 of his own cash for Watch Dogs, which was only days old, and a bunch of other games I was trying to trade in for store credit if I came back at closing and picked up a quarter oz. of weed and an eighth of mushrooms for him.

Back when Red Dead 2 came out I went to get it from the Gamestop in Galloway OH near Columbus just outside of the I-270 outer belt, I walk in, there was only one guy at the register and I was one of 3 costumers in there at the time, He seem out of it like something sucked all his energy out, he got kind of mad when I wanted to use the money I had on my power up pro card and it does seem like that turnover rate at that store is really high because there's a different person working the few times I go to buy a game or trade one in every few months, it used to be fun at that Gamestop, awesome midnight release parties with tournaments and pizza a free shwag but now its just stand in line and pick up your game so I don't even bother with them anymore plus supply usually beats out demand these days, I'll walk into that Gamestop in the morning tomorrow to get BFV and they'll have the extra copies of the early enlister edition and they don't even bother holding onto them because the pre-orders are probably still in the shitter.

Tre no, but managers have a yearly conference and get a shit ton of swag. The year the new consoles came out, managers got free xbox ones and ps4s and probably 10 or 15 free games.

I shower every three days, but the day before my shower I usually take a bath. I got into a bad habit of showering daily when I worked at a car wash (sweating...who knows what chemicals got in my hair) and my god did my scalp and acne prone skin pay for it. I also cut my hair to a couple inches and showering just made it easy to care for. But I’ve been growing it back out...and showering is bad for it. Not that sweat on the skin is good either. That being said.....I don’t stink. I don’t know what some people are doing wrong, but even in the vet medicine field now I know how to clean myself up and not smell like dog. And if I feel really dirty I just suck it up and shower. I think ethnicity plays a role too in skin/hair care and showering but I mean I’m just a whitey. Even in my job now though I get those clients that just...reek. Like not even BO, there’s just something foul. Sorry for the shower ramble on your old video. Your videos have been honestly fascinating for me, and I can empathize with a lot of the client/manager experiences. My only semi-retail experience is at a car wash, otherwise I worked in small and corporate practice clinics towards my career, but man did that car wash prepare me for the sheer stupidity of the world. And yet some parts were the most fun I ever had at a job, but other aspects were just awful. Also...THE DRAMA. Your Walmart drama episodes kill me because it was the same for us. How the hell is there drama at a damn car wash. And ya mostly...sexual drama.
