    Awesome! The ONE change I'd make to make it usable though would be to make each insole have it's own circuit, otherwise walking is gonna be a struggle XD

  • @wjf213
    @wjf213 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Good video. What did you say the diameter of the wire is? I know it is 4 meters long, two for each foot, but how thick is the wire? It sounded like you said 4mm and that can not be right, or did you say 0.4mm diameter which is about 0.015". Thanks and keep up the great work.

      4 years late but he said 4mm thick. Did you end up making it?

    • @wjf213
      @wjf213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@01imh No, I didn't. I took the easy way out...I moved south to where it's warm in the winter. I did buy nichrome wire but I don't remember what size it is...I think it was 22 or maybe 24 gauge wire, and just playing around with it, it seems like it would work great, but again I didn't make it into a working model. I will say this, it gets HOT with a short wire, so I didn't cut the wire, I just hooked up the power to one end and then played around attaching the other end of the power supply wire about 2 meters down on the nichrome wire. I was not sure how much my PS was putting out, so I didn't want to cut the nichrome wire too short or too long, so I played with it, but never made the project, but I have no doubt it will work fine using instructions in the video.

    • @Morngaroth
      @Morngaroth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heating tube can be found anywhere, but I'd suggest to search for carbon heating wire, can be easily ordered from aliexpress or anywhere online if you can't find it in local stores. As for amperage - it's said right in the beginning of the video, but it's better to calculate it according to your wire's resistance with the ohms law.

  • @h82fail

    This is cool thanks. Interesting how you wrapped it in heat-shrink tubing. Wondering how annoying wires down my pants would be to put the batteries in a backpack. My toes/feet get so much colder faster then the rest of my body. I've tripled up socks before.
    Not sure why you would need a regulator with batteries though?
    For example 3.5mm nichrome wire (27 Gauge / .014") is rated at 11.3ohms/m or 22.6ohms per sole. 22.6ohms times 12 volts = 6.5watts each. The amp rating on the power supply or batteries makes no difference, its the resistance of the circuit determining the wattage.
    You would need to control the voltage to get more or less heat. Or you could wire both shoes in series for a low power (half) setting and run them in parallel for a high power setting. At least I'm pretty sure I understand electricity, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

    So basically, the max power of the insoles is 24 watts. Because 12V @ 2A = 24 Watts. That means that since the insoles are in parallel, Each insole is 12 Ohms each. Making the total resistance connected to the power supply 6 Ohm's. Each insole is 12 watts @ 1A.
    Btw, even the caption says the wire is 4mm thick. That's not possible. That's thicker than 10 awg NiCr A or NiCr C. You wouldn't be able to bend the nichrome if it were that thick.

    • @kindaluni34

      Its impossible to calculate the resistance of a circuit by knowing only the power supply. If the power adapter could output 4amps why would the circuit change resistance?

      maybe you could tell me , if i wanted to make this and power it from a usb power bank , thats 5vs , or make a battery pack from lipo batteries , say 3 in parallel and just use 3.9 ish volts . what kind of regulator or bms should i choose ?
      also it has to be small enough to fit in my bike jersey pocket , so i think 3 or 4 lipo cells would be ok . And each heater would be be independent !
      I made one last year using a usb board and usb wires , but it was too fragile , so this year i will use drone battery connectors and a better switch . I like to be be able to just click them on and off as I ride .

      Roast some Rice/Rock Salt/Sand and wrap it in an old T-Shirt or just boil water and add a good amount of salt and fill a SmartWater bottle and boom, the bottle will shrink a bit in the beginning and will stop after the first 1 or 2 uses after that the size will remain same. Why SmartWater bottle? Its kinda flexible to go around shoulders and knees and doesn't make noises like other waterbottles.
