Great video john, that slow down is horrendous! I have the at games one and although not perfect is good for holidays. But that one shouldn't even be sold!
I have the 2013 atgames model, blue with a smaller screen. The 2015 model they updated to the bigger screen and added grey. Earlier models than 2013 were 3-button, black with orange buttons. Post 2015 they include save game support for a couple of the built in games (not supported for sd cards).
When it comes to portable Genesis/Mega Drive on a budget, I really enjoy the Retro Gen. I have a review of the unit. Doesnt have a sd slot but it does play original carts and it is region free. It can also be hooked to a TV ,) Thanks for sharing John. Greetings from Portugal.
John Hancock Good point on there. But, I have a rom hack of Knuckles in Sonic the hedgehog, on a cart, and it does work on the Retro Gen. Dont have an Everdrive, but could work also.
I would love to put a Raspberry Pi Zero in this handheld... Personally I think atGames did a good job on the design of their portables housing... Even the Atari one looks cool!
See I got dooped. I ordered mine like 2 years back when there was no videos on either system. I saw the Atgames one and ordered mine thinking it was the Atgames one. Took me a while to realize that I had a different one. I ended up doing a review on my channel and damn I feel compelled to get the Atgames one now!!!

John how is the sound with headphones? I know that those small speakers often make the game system horrible to listen to. But often they are a little better with headphones because you're not relying on the crappy speakers. Just interested to know if that helps and if these are worth picking up for a long flight.
Have you played your Mega Drive lately? 50hz may be slower, but not like that. I play 50hz PAL and have absolutely no problems with it, but it is what I am used to of course.
2020 UPDATE... ANYONE wanting a portable sega similar to this... Get the ATGAMES VERSION and do the NETOBOOTLOADER SD mod to fix the sound. It's worth it if you really really gotta have one.
There is a firecore hack that improves it a little. You put it on the SD card and run it like a ROM then it takes you to a menu that looks very similar. @johnhancock

"THE AVENGERS!" title screen actually did sound that terrible even on the original genesis. It's definitely playing at too high of a speed for the actual game though.
If anyone wants a great way to play Genesis games on the go, just get a PSP. It plays Genesis, Neo Geo, SNES, GBA, Playstation 1, NES, and a bunch of other consoles very well. And that isnt even counting the PSP library of games.
We also have reviewed this on our channel en compared. One thing is good about that clone! THe speakers itself are better!! Those are louder and better than the ones in the original ATGAMES Sega Handheld! Besides that everything is garbage!!
I love your videos john but if you had gotten this sent free you'd be pointing out all the POSITIVES and how nice it is just to be able to play all these games on the go and the quality isn't to bad and the sound is bearable. Instead you're ripping it apart.
I bought what was advertised as the real Atgames version and the seller sent me this instead. It does play SNES/GBA but they run just as bad. I used it for about a day then threw it out.
Why even consider playing Emu Consoles, if you can have the real deal the Sega Nomad. Even while mcwill makes a high quality lcd mod. Cant wait for it, that he gets it ready ^^.
No word on if the emulators used in these devices are legal? I would like to know on the box. Without the emulators the roms would be useless and the quality of the Emulator is what defines the play experience on these devices (for example Sound Quality and Frame Rate).
Nick, I never said that about roms. My point is those emulators are still in development and the hundreds of thousands of programmer hours that went into them was done in 'good faith' that their work wouldn't be stolen so a handful of Chinese companies could profit. When these devices come to market they hurt the entire emu dev community. That means more Streets of Rage with bad music and choppy fps and less playable games.
OK, I figured this is where the conversation would go. I will preface this by saying: I don't know what emulator they're using. I don't know what the license terms are for that emulator. However, many emulators are licensed under GPL, or similar, and members of the general gaming community (and even more baffling, often THE AUTHORS THEMSELVES) don't seem to understand that the GPL *specifically* grants the right to do exactly what these clone system manufacturers are doing: "When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, *not price.* Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (* *and charge for this service if you wish* *), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs; and that you know you can do these things." -- GPL v2 license. So, when a device manufacturer "steals" that emulator, they are doing so with the author's (or authors') /explicit permission to do just that/. When a confused author responds to this by getting all butt-hurt and whining about how "they didn't even ask us first!" ... there is ZERO requirement to ask for permission. That's the whole, entire, literal point of the free software license ecosystem. Freedom. To use the software. However you want. If you don't like those terms, don't publish free software. It's THAT simple. The ONE caveat to this, which gives ANY room for legitimate criticism, is that most of the fly-by-night manufacturers are not publishing their (potentially) modified source code. That is actually a violation of the license. But, if they use stock code, compiled as-is, and include it as a binary library on their system with a proprietary front-end, they're pretty much OK. The true irony to all of this is, those people erroneously crying foul that "the Chinese are ripping off these developers" are then using that software themselves (having not paid penny one for it) to play ROMs they often do not have any legal right to possess. Don't misunderstand, I'm not against ROMs in theory. I have and do emulate as well. I also (to the extent possible) have spent considerable time and money acquiring that software in original disc/cart form. I still make no claim to be perfect, it's just... if you're going to throw stones... well...
I got something called a pxp3 slimstation, and let me tell you, for 20 bucks I got about 140 genesis games, they all work great and it was a good investment. It includes Gain ground, which is one of my all time fav genesis games. Check it out it works good and the sound is great.

This garbage version makes the AtGames version look spectacular. Only thing it does better is that it allows you to play other roms instead of just Genesis games but the performance are still garbage. While the AtGames runs at full 60fps, the clone runs at around 20fps, such slowdown indeed.
Just get a 15 euro psp from somewhere. Ive been playing all these games and every other classic home and arcade system for years on one. stop it with these ridiculous systems.

The PAL Mega Drive isn't very slow. It's more than playable.

the Brazilian guy fixed the sound and many games that didn't work in the SD before. Just put the file in the SD and go for it.

that bootleg handheld looks to run even slower than a pal Megadrive which runs atleast 20% slower than its ntsc counterpart.
