I worked on a 67 Beetle in 2003. Complete tear down bolt by bolt. Stripped to bare metal and all rusted out sections replaced. Turned it over to the owners running for them to finish the fun part of completing the assembly. But up to now it sits in their garage motionless. These beauties are a great piece of engineering.

I now own the Carmel 1967 westfalia. I camp and drive 1000s of miles all the time. It's wild how one persons decisions in Wyoming affect me all the way in California
Nice. Has the motor been out of it since you got it. I got that running before I brought it down to Cali and was amazed that Shawn drove it as much as he did with the same motor that had been sitting in for all those years. JC.
@@Volkswear yup I've put thousands of miles on it. I just adjust the valves and keep adding oil. It needs to be pulled and resealed. Leaking from the oil cooler.

As art, VW vans are great. As vehicles, no one who had one could possibly think its a good choice. I've owned quite a few and don't want any more of that. My split window, shortened 65 bus was my daily driver until one day, after a close call with a person making a sudden left turn in front of me, I got scared of it and wouldn't drive it anymore.
I drive my '72 Mercedes L306D bus every day. I take it over the Sierras regularly. They were never sold in the US so there aren't many around, but they seem to be far more rugged that a VW overall and look pretty similar as well.

The introduction of Delo 400 MGX into the public transport vehicles, performance is beyond customers expectations. The drain time is triple fuel economy is tremendous as is the engine performance.
I had a 66 Westy....sold it for $500 in 1991..drove great and solid..these are cool vans but pricesd about 10 times more than they are worth because of the Yuppies that have no concept of money....
The mountain air has preserved them. A part of me says maybe let some other people find and restore them, snaffling all these is a little depressing to the rest of us hoping to get one some day :-( The odds stack up rapidly when they are bought up en masse like this. The sellers would make far more if they advertised them to joe public rather than let them go through traders.
shame you guys didn't rescue the bug too, everyone loves a good bug or two. I know where 8 60's and 70's bus's are rusting away here in Canada its really a shame, never see them on the road up here.

Here in Finland i just found one t1 panel van body in good shape, it doesnt have engine, axels, seats etc. And a week from that i found a t2 bus that has everything on it, but is badly rusted out. I will have to ask the price for them. The t1 i am most exited, but dont have any place to work on it.
Hi Spencer: My son is a bus collector, and he feels the late (77-79) bay window buses are the best, especially if you find a 79 with hydraulic lifters. Add solid state ignition, and there's not much else you need to do for routine maintenance, other than changing the oil. Contrary to popular belief, the fuel injected engines work much better than carb engines. My son is also a VW Master Technician.
I would agree that the 77-79 Bay Windows are excellent years and fairly reliable. The down side is the rebuilds on these engines can be very expensive. If you are able to find a 68-71 Bay Window Bus these are probably the cheapest to work on. They have the same motor as the beetle and rebuilds are 1/3 the cost of a 2.0 liter rebuild. If you are looking at Vanagons try and find a 86-91. The 2.1 is a much better engine than the 1.9. Thanks for watching. JC.

why do ppl like them so much from the early ones to the latest. my Dad owned a sky blue pick up in the early 80s back then it turned heads for the wrong reasons it ran on petrol and it drank the stuff he used to joke that the back was for carrying the petrol tank.
I've learned that when you make a deal on an Old VW you don't wait to go get it. The longer you wait the more likely things are to go south with the deal. JC.

One mans project becomes another mans headache. My uncle schooled me on the VW bus and told me to avoid them at all costs. You have to have the will to work on on them because thats pretty much what you do is work on them. Once you learn them, they are not bad. Just not me. Like a boat,they cost,and cost,and cost.
Sold my 2003 Eurovan after owning it for 13 years. I cry everyday, it was a mistake. Have not been able to find anything in the American van market that is comparable in size, performance and compactness. Quite frankly there is none. VW is making a hugh error by not bring the van back. There is a hot market for vans.The VW executives are asleep at the wheel putting out 4x4 that look like all the others and are extremely costly. After being a VW enthusiast and owner for many decades, am walking away. Recently on a trip to Europe, I saw many vans by Peugot, Citroen, Fiat all better handling than the ugly, wide bodied Toyota, Hondas and Nissans.
A few. Split Buses are getting harder and harder to find but so far this year there have been 5 found in our area. This year we've "rescued" 2 splits, 2 bays and a Vanagon Syncro Westy ourselves and been involved with 3 other split buses. We don't video them all just the stuff that is hopefully entertaining.
