Freddie was so close to Montserrat and trusted her so much that she was one of the very few people that he told of his illness before he would perform this song with her...he had loved her voice ever since first hearing her perform in London.
Montserrat Caballé has said many pop/rock singers have asked her (after this performance) to perform a duet with them and she has always said "No" because she has said she respected Freddie Mercury too much and she would never sing with someone else. Also, she was the only person Freddie wanted to sing at his funeral and she was. They truly loved each other.
She only said about other pop singers asking her to record a duet with her that it must be something really special to make her agree to do it. And she later recorded a lot of duet with many artists. The one with Gino Vannelli "Rose In December" is really beautiful.
When the band Queen was due to go to Barcelona for a concert, a spanish journalist asked what the band knew of the city. Freddy Mercury answered 'the Catalan Nightingale' which was the nickname of Montserrat Caballe, this is how their collaboration started. Afterwards, the song was chosen as the anthem for the Barcelona olympic games.
Definitely the best song created for an olympic game. No other song has had the impact of this musical wonder. It was a real pity that Freddie could not sing it at the opening of the games due to his death 7 months earlier. I understand that Montserrat did not want to do duets with anyone in the rock world after this song. Enormous was the respect they both had for each other. Great reaction, greetings from Argentina
Freddie Mercury was so much more than a rock singer, he was a brilliant musician, an excellent singer, songwriter, storyteller, and he had the range to sing operatic songs. Montserrat Caballé was one of the most famous opera divas of the last century, she was famous for her very high soft notes. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk of singing with a rock star, because she recognized The Musician in Freddie instantly. There are 2 more songs at La Nit 88. The Golden Boy (that is even more dramatic) and How Can I Go On, worth to check them out.
THIS SONG WAS PRODUCED FOR THE OLYMPICS 1992 in Barcelona......Monserrat told that Freddy have d´said to her that he will not be alive when they started.......and she sings the opening ceremony alone with him from the screen.....
Have long said that Freddie is the /only/ rock singer who could have pulled this off and will die on that hill. Love that hand gesture from Montserrat towards the end (about 7:50), she's done her run up the scale and she just pings the song over to Freddie with that flick of her fingers. The pair got really close after doing this, and while she wanted to do it for the Olympics Freddie admitted to her that he was never going to make it. So bittersweet.
Beautiful reaction , i feel so proud and goosbumps , i'm 63 , from Barcelona , born in this my city. You welcome at any time. Keep on rocking lady❤ Greetings from Cadaqués, the most beautiful coast village in the spanish mediterrànian coast. Check It , go after Barcelona !!!
Sra. Caballe was one of a kind. She had an unparalleled mastery of a technique called Coloratura...those runs and ornamentations. And her eagerness to collaborate with Freddie to create this masterpiece for the Olympics hosted by her hometown was beautiful.
Is so especial for our city and is a big honor. And ty for you empaty for freddie and Montse(abr) of Montserrat, she is one of the best opera singer ever. Stacey thank you for remember this moment. Im 18years at the moment of the olimpic games i born and living in Barcelona is very special you reaction thank you again. Sorry for t my English😊. Its so bad
Montserrat was one of Freddies favorite singers and idols. A big dream for him to sing with her, told by him self. I have a feeling that he thought more of her, then Barcelona when writing this song, a hidden hymn
Barcelona is a collaboration studio album between Freddie and Operatic Soprano Montserrat Caballe’ the song was released in 1988, Freddie was asked to write a song for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992,unfortunately Freddie passed away before he and Caballe’ could perform together at the Olympics ,Freddie and Caballe’ absolutely adored and had great respect for each other, when Freddie died , Caballe performed Barcelona at the 1992 Olympics, she did not attend Freddie’s funeral but her song, “D’amour Sull Ali Rose” was played at Freddie’s funeral,Caballe’ was from Barcelona and there is a interview after Freddie passed with her talking about how much she loves and adored Freddie,There’s another collaboration between these two with the song ( How Can I Go On ) which is phenomenal check it out, great reaction thanks 🙏
Thank you again for this beautiful reaction to this magnificent music. It's been a long time since I watched the video and I already had tears in my eyes seeing Freddie and Monserrat Caballé returning on stage holding hands. Thank you very much Stacey, Merci 😘
These two singers with their performance have united their talent and their souls, giving to those who listen to it this exciting masterpiece for eternity. 🌺
An amazing song and performance from this fantastic duo.I know how much you love Freddie and Queen but he has other great songs as a solo artist such as I Was Born To Love You and Made In Heaven. Thanks for your amazing reaction, you are the best TH-cam reactor and look forward to even more of your musical reactions.
Freddie Mercury intended to record at least one song with Montserrat Caballé, but the Catalan opera singer asked if they could record an entire album. Mercury and Mike Moran, with the help of Tim Rice and Caballé herself, then wrote seven songs. The Catalan singer's only request was that one of the songs mention her hometown, Barcelona.
I think you can see the genuine affection they had for one another. These performances with Montserrat were Freddie's last public appearances. Another lovely song together was "How Can I Go On?"
Ho sentito questa canzone un milione di volte, e ogni volta mi si drizzano i peli e mi vengono i brividi. Non sto esagerando, mi succede davvero. È incredibile...
Finally this song! ❤ I absolutely love it! I heard it in 1992 during Olympcs for the first time. I was 8 and since this time this song belongs to my favourite Queen's songs. Thank you for the reaction! It's so amazing.❤
A once in a lifetime performance. The stars aligned here. I think opera and rock are one in the same. Opera was rock before there was rock. And rock is the modern equivalent of opera. Freddy wasn't just powerful he was FEARLESS!
That was in 88, four years before the Olympics when Barcelona got the Flag from Seoul. Logically it was planned that the duo would open the Olympic Games but tragically Freddie died half a year earlier. Thus an earlier recording of the song by them was played over the speakers.
Roger Taylor, the drummer for Queen, said that Freddie Mercury's singing sounded like a "manic goat" before he became famous. Taylor said that Mercury's singing was "dreadful" before he perfected his vocals and said that Mercury "learned quickly" to become "beautiful Fred".
React to the very emotional song "How Can I Go On" which Freddie and Montserrat sang at the same concert, just after this song. It was the last time Freddie Mercury sang the song live in front of an audience, as this was his last live performance.
This song was everywhere in Barcelona at the time of preparation for the Olympic Games. Monserrat suggested they record an entire album. Freddie co-wrote all the songs with Mike Moran and Tim Rice. It's a wonderful record. Suggestion: "How Can I Go On"
they had a genuine affection and friendship, there is a video of how all this came about.. sadly Freddie did not make it to the Olympics... Montserrat and Freddie made a complete album, May they both rest in peace and continue to make wonderful music together wherever they are now.
Great reaction to these two stars. I love them very much. Montserrat Caballé was one of the greatest opera singers of the second half of the twentieth century and Freddie Mercury one of the greatest rock singers. Their meeting could only give something great.
Great choice. This allowed Freddie to have free expression. Great reaction as always 🫶 One of my most favourite City’s in the World too. Everytime I return it does take my breath away.
This is the song that first introduced me to Freddie's singing. I was much younger back then, I think that I was in elementary school. His voice echoed so much in my head, when I listened this song for the first time. My first thought was what a vocal giant this guy was. Years later I actually discovered Queen, coincidentaly, watching Two and a half men, there was a reference about Queen in one of the episodes. From that moment, little by little, I started becoming a hardcore Queen fan, and to this date I still am.
I was a teenager-almost 20 there. Good times for Spain. After decades of darkness we joined the EU in 1985 and the 1992 Olympics where the final endorsement to our young democracy. You could really smell the optimism in the air. As always, grass wasn't as green as it seemed, but happy years and happy memories nevertheless. Freddie was a giant, even as sick as he was already. Missed forever ❤
I'm sure you'll love Spain. My best holiday there was a 3 week drive down to Alicante and back from England. We stayed at about 20 different places in the camper van to see the landscape and places.
Quisiera conocerlas.
I was 10 when the barcelona Olympics took place, I heard this on the TV coverage and really liked it. I was that age before I knew or cared what was cool. My mum bought the single for me on 7" vinyl
Bonjour Stacey 🥰🥰😘!!! Still a lot of childhood memories for me, I remember seeing this ceremony live on TV, I love this performance by Freddy and Montserrat, it's really magnificent, a beautiful moment of music!!! thank you for sharing this!!!! 🩷🩷🩷
Variation on a theme: "Under Pressure" performed by David Bowie, and Annie Lennox with Queen at a memorial tribute concert for Freddie Mercury in 1992. The Mint Green Duke duets with the Raccoon Ballerina.
Something that does not get mentioned enough (imho) is that this is not only a truly beautiful song, powerful and all, but rather the fact that Freddie held his own with ease alongside Opera Royalty. Caballe was, during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, one of literally a handful of the greatest Dramatic Sopranos in the World of Opera. She sang live and recorded in Spanish, Italian and German alomgside the greatest singers of that period. Do follow up reacting to videos of the other songs they recorded together, not forgetting two that they recorded not live but by exchanging recordings: La Japonaise and Ensueno, the latter in Spanish with Freddie singing high baritone, not his natural tenor.
Recorded in advance for the Barcelona Olympics. Freddie knew how sick he was and would probably not live to see the Olympics. He passed Nov. 24, 1991. 😢
Muy buena reacción , me alegra que eligieras Mallorca mi Isla ahora la tuya , y espero te gustara y tuvieras una buena estancia, espero te guste Barcelona maravillosa ciudad , un fuerte abrazo desde Mallorca
Here’s some city songs: “New York, New York,” Frank Sinatra; “Southbound Ryan,” Denis DeYoung; “Ventura Highway,” America; “We Built This City,” Starship.
They did indeed record an entire album together; I heartily recommend you search for it and purchase a copy. I remember reading that Montserrat relates that she had told Freddie that she couldn't wait to perform this song with him "in a couple of years at the Olympics," and he took her hand and said, "Darling, I won't be here in a couple of years," and told her of his illness. At that time she was one of maybe 5 people in the world that he had confided in. The song was played for the Olympics, and if I recall correctly, Montserrat sang live while Freddie's half was played on a giant video monitor...and at the line "God willing, we will meet again, someday" she held her hand out to his image on the screen...
Stacey, I'm from Spain and I lived in Barcelona 7 years. It's a beautiful city and I'm sure you will have an amazing time there in your friends wedding.
BTW, The background vocals are actually ALL Freddie's voice (even tho there are "background singers"... They must've been included for visual effect, IDK.
Hi Stacey...just caught this. I did comment on another video. I'm new to your channel. I watched you review Queen at Live Aid and your reaction and commentary...I was addicted to you from then. Another Queen song I don't think you've reviewed is Who wants to live forever..theme from Highlander movie. Also your new found Phil Collins interest..against all odds Phil Collins Live Aid 1985. Keep them coming. You're amazing. Hi from the UK
This was created for the Barcelona Olympics, but was never used after Freddie untimely passing, some people believed that it was also due to the news that his passing was aids related. Though I don't know if that is true. It did become the unofficial Olympics song, and I believe it got to number 1 in the UK charts.(I know I bought it)
Si vienes a España en 2026 , ven a la ciudad de Bilbao , seré vuestro guía turístico ! Un placer verte reaccionar a Freddie Mercury y a la banda Queen , gracias !
"Barcelona" was re-released in the US in 1992 to coincide with the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It reached number 2 on the US singles chart. The same as in the UK charts.
Before going to Barcelona, I strongly recommend watching/listening to the compositions from the album "Gaudi" by the group "Alan Parsons Project" And first of all - "La Sagrada Familia", because in Barcelona you will definitely get acquainted with the architectural heritage of Antonio Gaudi, and of course with the Sagrada Familia. However, the album is essentially conceptual, so it is highly advisable to listen to it in its entirety, from beginning to end. P.S. It is better to listen to "La Sagrada Familia" in the original recording of 1987. It has the best sound, IMHO.
Freddie was a fan of Montsy and Montsy was a fan of Freddie ... when Montsy found out about it in an interview, she called Fred, met him, they felt in "love" (very best friends), made an whole album together ... and this is a part of the result! Check out "The Golden Boy" (< incl. a gospel choir).
The whole album "Barcelona" is great. I would recommend from the same album "La Japonaise", "The Golden Boy" and "Exercises in free love". If you want to see Freddie Mercury suited, check out the video of his version of "The Great Pretender" or Queen´s " Who wants to live forever" video. . Happy to hear you are visiting mi city in 2026, hope you enjoy it !!!!!
The way Montserrat Caballé carries the entire weight of the song without taking the spotlight away from Freddie is impeccably professional.
Freddie was so close to Montserrat and trusted her so much that she was one of the very few people that he told of his illness
before he would perform this song with her...he had loved her voice ever since first hearing her perform in London.
Freddie genuinely adored Montserrat!! ❤
Montserrat Caballé has said many pop/rock singers have asked her (after this performance) to perform a duet with them and she has always said "No" because she has said she respected Freddie Mercury too much and she would never sing with someone else.

I can only be grateful to Freddie for singing and making this song about my city.

I think, if Freddie hadn't joined Queen, he would've been a huge success in musical theatre. His stage presence and voice are perfect for it.
Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe indeed did a whole album together.
THIS SONG WAS PRODUCED FOR THE OLYMPICS 1992 in Barcelona......Monserrat told that Freddy have d´said to her that he will not be alive when they started.......and she sings the opening ceremony alone with him from the screen.....

Now you can understand why freddie was the best artist....not only front man!!
Thanks for this tribute to him
Sra. Caballe was one of a kind. She had an unparalleled mastery of a technique called Coloratura...those runs and ornamentations. And her eagerness to collaborate with Freddie to create this masterpiece for the Olympics hosted by her hometown was beautiful.
Beautiful performance! In the way they looked at each other, you can see the respect and love they had for one another.

Stunning, Beautiful, Magical Masterpiece.

Beautiful. And the calmest Freddy has ever been on stage....lol.
This is why Freddie is the greatest singer of my lifetime.
Montserrat looks beautiful and also amazing.

Freddie wrote this for her. Barcelona was her hometown.

"How can I go on" and "Guide me home" will make you break down, that's a given! Same album with Montsy 🤍
when she grabs his hand when he looks so lost in how can i go on breaks my heart
Montserrat sang by herself before the 92 Olympics. I love them both as you do! Thanks for checking it out!

They met at Barcelona's Ritz Hotel, 1987. He was so nervous, lol. You pronounced Montserrat so well (my mom's name btw)
That was in 88, four years before the Olympics when Barcelona got the Flag from Seoul. Logically it was planned that the duo would open the Olympic Games but tragically Freddie died half a year earlier. Thus an earlier recording of the song by them was played over the speakers.
You looks so excited and in love with Freddie specially because he wore that tuxedo .
I like see you happy and gorgeous 🤩🥰
That was such an overwhelming and amazing concierto, gellega and British, one in a million, pure glory. I luv it!
Montserrat was the last "gran dame" at opera, she was the "soprano of the 20th century". Truly a star like Freddy in a different genre..
HI STACEY GREAT REACTON LOVE THIS SONG, GET GOOSEBUMPS EVERY TIME I HEAR THIS.😘😘
Roger Taylor, the drummer for Queen, said that Freddie Mercury's singing sounded like a "manic goat" before he became famous.

They're musicians and artists! Freddie is an Artist!!!

You'd see Freddie hit those high gorgeous notes himself in the song EVERCISES IN FREE LOVE from the same album, Barcelona.
Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé - How Can I Go On
There’s audio tapes out there of Freddie and monseratte jamming on Freddie’s piano at his house all night long.
Thank you beautiful for the reaction ❤❤❤
Every time i hear this song after all these years it brings tears to my eyes
So happy you reacted to this , it's really special . Please watch the show must go on by queen and also who wants to live forever.

Variation on a theme: "Under Pressure" performed by David Bowie, and Annie Lennox with Queen at a memorial tribute concert for Freddie Mercury in 1992. The Mint Green Duke duets with the Raccoon Ballerina.

The song is a few years before the olympics.. and he was dead, when the olympics were held in Barcelona.
BTW, The background vocals are actually ALL Freddie's voice (even tho there are "background singers"... They must've been included for visual effect, IDK.

I can't watch this without crying.
