Last year my sister was at a festival "Cropredy" in the UK . Looking over to the beer tent she recognised a familiar face just chilling with friends enjoying the music ... no other than Mr Robert Plant . Hi Jess, hi Mike your reactions make me chuckle. Love you being open to ye olde music. How about Deep Purple 'child in time ' live 1970 ? Thanks again , love your channel, Paul.😅
The song is heavily inspired by the Willie Dixon song called "You Need Love" which was sung by Muddy Waters, and rearranged by The Small Faces who called it "You Need Lovin". Willie Dixon wrote most of the great Blues songs that were later covered by the '66-'72 rock/blues bands from both sides of the Atlantic.
This is definitely the definitive version of the song, but you should know that Zeppelin didn’t write it. It was written by bluesman Willie Dixon and originally recorded by Muddy Waters. Zeppelin credited themselves as the writers so Willie sued them. I believe Zeppelin settled out of court and Robert Plant admitted that it was “a Nick” (his words) and that they didn’t think anyone would know because it was a pretty obscure blues record. I love Zeppelin but to me it’s important that the original writer and artists get their dues. So many blues artists got shafted by the music industry.
You're only talking about the lyrics. The music and song construction is all Zeppelin and nothing to do with Willie Dixon. Zeppelin could have done the exact same song with different lyrics and would never have needed to credit Dixon. Plant was ONLY referring to the lyrics when he said he nicked them. He said Jimmy's riff was already there before he took lyrics from Dixon.
Interestingly, while the song was Willie Dixon's, Whole Lotta Love as a recording was further from the original song than some of the licks played by notable blues guitarists in songs that were considered originals. Whole sections of guitar solos were lifted from the great bluesmen who went before. That is not a copyright breach. It is mimicry. It is probably because succeeding generations of bluesmen "borrowed" from their forebears. Lemons were being squeezed and singers were aspiring to be backdoor men in lyrics well before the first recordings were made in the 1920s.
I saw them on their first European Continental Tour in April 1969 in Rotterdam - The Netherlands. It was a special offer to see them in De Doelen for 2,50 Guilders. It wasn't even sold out.
Led Zeppelin never considered Sabbath and Purple their peers. They disliked any such comparison. Quite right because they had next to nothing in common with either of those bands.
Mississippi 1962. Imagine the reception this song received (You Need Love - written by Willie Dixon, recorded by Muddy Waters). No Jim Crow in the UK 7 years later, and many Americans heard their own music for the first time.
Just a matter of interest here. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin saw a performance of the Japanese group " Band Maid" a year or two ago. He likened Akane , the drummer, to John Bonham. He was so impressed with her that he requested a photo with her.

After the drummer John Bonham died in 1980 the band split up. 27 years later, with Bonham's son Jason on the drums, they did a one off concert called Celebration Day in a venue which seated 20,000 people. The tickets were sold online -over 22 million applied for tickets. They sounded just as good as 30 years before when I saw them live in 73. They were offered $1 billion (1.6 billion today) to play 3 concerts in the US in 2008. They turned it down.

The line " i wanna be your backdoor man " when i was young i thought he meant he was going to sneak in through the kitchen back door 😂
'In Through the Out Door.' was one of their albums.
It's an old Blues song trope, referring to the lover who sneaks out through the back door as the husband comes home by the front door.
A backdoor man in the song relates to a side piece, the husband goes out the front door, and the side piece comes in through the backdoor.
