This is basically my dream tool, although it has a bit of a prototypey vibe. I could literally add just about any specialized tool I ever need. The phosphor bronze washer idea sounds great.

totally. I'm also a sucker for those colors.
Really, the tool can get the annoying feeling lost that I'm always carrying something around I will never need.
(currently I have a Wave+ with me and it has something that I totally hate and think is worthless weight)

Thank you for your in depth and honest review on this multitool. I really enjoyed this because you showed all sides and did not hide anything. I think Goat Tools is into something really good, but it will take time. We are so critical on companies that come out with such a unique item that might have a few small issues. I see a lot more good than bad in this one, and can’t wait to see what they do in the future. Maybe they will kick the larger companies into gear 😂.

That modularity is still pretty cool. It seems nice as a lightweight, incidental use tool. You're not going to beat on it, but being able to customize an incidental tool like this is awesome. No longer have to waste space on tools I will never use. I hope they make a kind of swiss army knife version where you just have that one half. Little disappointing about the locking being weak. Having that be replaceable would be nice. And really hope they improve that file.

Yes, that x100 😆. I'm definitely going to try the"One Legged Goat" (coining the phrase now) mod when my tool gets here. The really cool part is that with removable tools that you can buy separately, you can build 2 "One Legged Goats" per tool, making the cost comparable to a regular Swiss army knife.

    • @McRootbeer
      @McRootbeer ปีที่แล้ว +1

Me too. I bet 80-90% of people who're backing on indigogo are backing the concept and potential future of the platform rather than the initial tool itself. I think goat tools will succeed or fail based on how much community engagement and good will they can muster up from users and aftermarket vendors.

  • @CharlesHeller

What I get from this review is that the Goat Tool might be good for modding to specific purposes, for instance boating, (one guy below mentioned a Marlin spike - capitol idea!) or possibly for cycling. (I know that there are dedicated cycling tools.)
The scissors really sells me on the Goat Tool. Also love idea of using other 5mm pivot tools for donors, and really like the brass washer idea. Might be fun to adapt it to the scale tools from SAK, & see if there's a way to stick a very small flashlight to it (maybe just lanyard something to it and skip trying to engineer.) I carry several lights on me anyway, but SOMETIMES having a very small light on board can facilitate a quick, one-handed fix, repair, or rescue.
Just taking out stuff I don't use and putting in washers to make it light is an idea...
Also modding it to take the only 2 keys I use and make it my "everything tool."
Would love a "lightsaber mod" for Goat Tool, but probably have to wait until the new Force awakens...

I think you hit the nail on who this is potentially for. Speaking personally this is exactly the thing I was waiting for, and backed it as well. I probably won't ever need to do hard work much in my life and a lot of other existing multitools that exists before this didn't really speak to me without feeling like I'm wasting my money on tools I won't use. With something like that I can take out or add to suit my needs, even if I'm more paying for the platform itself.
And hey when I realized I do need a harder use multitool / proper tools, I'll get that later as needed.
Looking forward to your tests and forth ER reviews.

Tool already has a strong following and the modularity design is great so I don't doubt they will improve the design. Looking forward to more blade styles, jig saw blade adapters, scalpel blade adapters etc. Maybe do a sawzall blade mod video like you did with the wave in the near future for the goat tool?

  • @johnsanford3596
    @johnsanford3596 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Want. Want. WANT. WAAAAANNNNTTTT!!! :D. Here's hoping that they do a diamond file. One thing about the saw blade, it looks like the saw plate hasn't been thinned down enough. These multi-tool sawblades don't have any actual set to the teeth, so to achieve the same functional benefit of set teeth, the plate (the portion of the saw blade behind the teeth) needs to be ground thinner. I have a Charge+ G10 in my hand right now and the difference in the thickness at the spine of the blade vs the thickness of the spine of all three of the other blades is substantial.
I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of mods the tinkerers across the world come up with for this tool.

One of the real challenges for a wire cutter is cutting a coat hanger. It may likely damage the cutter. My SOG has a nick in the pliers when I cut one in the middle of the cutter (and not the inner-most section).

Modular multi tools are such an exciting idea, can't wait for it and others to go from the Kickstarter stage to public sale. I do wish that there was a larger variety of scales available, to get the comfortable, rounded edges we see on proprietary tools.
Part of the reason I'm excited for the modularity is that I was considering the bibury 22 in 1 recently, but was hesitant because of the 2 in 1 blade and since screwdrivers are a big part of my use case, the lack of a bit driver caused my hesitancy. If there was a way to get a plane edge blade and bit driver on that, the tool would be basically perfect for me, and modularity would fix that without needing to mod the tools, which I don't always have the time to mess with.

Excellent review! No sir... No wasted material at all. And you focused on important points... I am so sick of people spending ten minutes measuring and weighing tools lol. I agree with your comments on the locking system... As someone who spends a lot of time evaluating knives for dangerous situations, I try to get people to understand the joint of any instrument is usually an inherent weakness.
Just as no folder I know of has the stability of a full tang blade, people have to recognize the elements that determine what a multi tool can achieve safely and consistently. For this tool (the GOAT) specifically, we are looking at a solid medium sized tool. I would compare it to many SOG tools but not a tool like the Gerber Multi Force, or the Leather man you made a similar comparison with.
It is what it is... They could make a larger platform with more robust tools, or they could improve design reliability through newer versions, perhaps a clip that shuts down the modular tool where there is open space... And as you say, I would focus a lot of attention to the chronic instability of a locking system that always has one open area that can be stressed.
I also agree and you are one of the few people that make this point: Stainless is great material... Do I really need my multi tool to last 3 generations? But making that steel so that function is optimal is important and when a tool has a flimsiness to it, that is troubling. BiBury seems to recognize this, the saw comparison you made was a great example. An aside: it is interesting to me how Chinese innovation sometimes is not noticed. Tools like the latest Roxbury and the BiBury are well made muli tools. Alas GOAT is in the right direction. They seem destined for great things... already that scissors and the xacto type blade stand out, as well as (perhaps) the wire cutters. I look forward to subsequent reviews.

    Certainly here I did...
The second is, "did this video waste my time?"
This was a good investment for me. I learned, esp about the lock.
Lastly, "can I improve my life with some hack, mod, or maneuver in a video?"
I'm left-handed, so this one will come in handy the day my Goat Tool arrives.

A very pragmatic review. Thank you. There seems to be one reality that might be eluding all of us multi-tool aficionados though: this is a portable, compact and EDC-type tool. It is NOT a dedicated tool for a specific task. None of these (types of multi-tools) from any reputable company will ever replace a proper tool: the folding knife will never measure up to a full tang quality knife like a Gerber StrongArm Fixed Blade Knife, or even a Morakniv. None of them will ever replace a 16oz DeWalt anti-vibe hammer. Etc. (You get the point, I hope.) These items are designed to get us out of a pinch, not to replace the tools of a trade - no insult to the G.O.A.T. name.

Firstly, your "Wire for testing the cutters" question - you need to get hold of some aircraft-grade "Nyvin" electrical cable - which comes in a multitude of diameters from tiny to monstrous - think approximately one-sixteenth to half-an-inch diameter - with a multi-layered, fire-resistant outer covering, then the insulation, then a stainless steel stranded conductor in the centre. Secondly, and also related to the pliers, it appears as though there is another, additional tool feature here, which is a flat "crimper" section behind the plier pivot area. This could be useful in several situations.

I wish the plierhead was a bit more streamlined, but other than that this looks like a good development. I'm excited for what people do with this, especially whatever cottage industry crops up for 5mm pivot tools that you don't otherwise find in multitools.
I wonder if some of this can be moved back to the other types of tools, allowing us to use some of this sort of stuff in other pre-existing multi-tool shells. (I do know how cramped they are for space, though -- the signal has the cheap-feeling add-ons because it just doesn't have any more room than the tools already there otherwise.
it definitely looks like if it pans out, it could replace my Signal for office carry -- I bought it mainly for the hammer-head because sometimes things need to fit somewhere they don't want to. I was hoping you would go more into the actual mechanism of how the tool changing actually works with a disassembly. However, I can kinda see how it would work. Probably a D shaped shaft controlled by the tool changing arm.

I think it's a game changer as a multi-tool, especially for the UK, given our more stringent knife laws, the ability to carry a knifeless modular multi-tool that I can customise is really appealing, granted, I don't think it would replace my existing pocket carry given how much functionality I've got, although as a lightweight alternative, I can see a use for it, which is worrying because I really shouldn't buy another multi-tool lol. I'm curious what Ben from TX Tool crib and Jon Gadget would have to say about it actually.

I hope/think future GOAT tools are going to epic. They need mad testing and reviews to fine tune. They clearly have listened to complaints we all have about existing MTs and hopefully will improve the ‘flaws’ in their first releases.
The only thing I don’t like so far is the squareness of the handle scales.

Thanks for answering so many questions (yay lefties:P) And many of the negatives like the locking bar, clumping etc i have seen coming. Would still like to have one, but the shipping cost, taxes and paying options make it a nogo for me right now:/ As for never coming out with a product that good the first time, the Swisstool came out in 97 and still kicks ass:) But of cause they got a 100 years or so headstart creating multipurpose tools:P Anyway, looking forward to see where the Goat tool goes, hope it succeeds, love the custom aspect of it very much.

Given the softer steel for the frame, how does that affect the "hammer"/persuader's performance?
I don't use my multitool too frequently, but when I need it I really appreciate having it. This means that the wear and lock issues aren't a huge problem for me, and the modularity lets me avoid carrying other things to cover the shortcomings like I need to do with other tools. More importantly, I gotta support anything that makes the industry more open, repairable, and customizable. Sick of multitools sitting unused in drawers because the toolset wasn't quite right.

    • @maxlvledc

On the subject of flex, for what it's worth, plenty of full sized, dedicated pliers have flex in the handles too. I have a pair of Knipex linesman pliers,(03 02 180) that I can make flex. Same goes for a pair of 250mm cobras. Solid steel handles, but there is still flex!

ill be honest, ive been trying to find a multi tool that actually gets me excited, something that can ACTUALLY be useful and not just a whole bunch of tools youll never use which is why im subbed to this channel. this might be the first one that actually gets me pumped about the idea of having a custom MT. though i am a gamer, so i know better than to get excited for something before it ever hits the market especially something on kickstarter/indiegogo (still remember the ouya hype) but i hope a ton of companies get behind this and starts making custom attachments
honestly i dont know why no other companies thought of this before given tools in the modern day are all about the addons and the razor blade business model, with things like crkts deabolt why not lol

Maxlvledc: TSA: Style PS or Free P2?
    Which would you recommend?
Both modified to use Phillips / Screwdriver flat bit & P2 also modified for removable scalpel (so no blade on plane). Or would you not do the flat bit mod on the P2?
    Updated:
I just picked up the P2 & even though I only paid $40 I'm not sure I have it in me to alter the blade on the tool & invalidate the warranty. I found 3D printing plans to use flat bits on the Free w/out alterations so I'll probably do that. So I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. BTW I got a P4 last week for $60.
Watching your channel is costing me money in the last month: Bolster, Charge, GOAT, Free P4, now the P2 & thinking about the Style PS. And I already had 7 other Leathermans. I should return the Bolster & Charge & go to a 12 step program.
The really funny thing is I stopped carrying a Leatherman 3 years ago when I stopped being a Scout leader.

To tell I wish there will be a serious level of MT customization.
The problem to me is when you are in MTs you indeed need 2 MTs and try to find the best complementary tools. And in most cases there a Leatherman brand MT or Gerber or Victorinox SAK as a sort of main MT and a cheaper model with things that aren't present with the main tool and then add mini screwdrivers and wrenches to the mix.
To be honest I would love to see insulated MTs then a more ajustable wrench based one a bit like the dual force or with something with knipex style plier heads like those plier wrenches and cobra wrenches. Then I have the ultimate combination of MTs for a lot of tasks.
Sometimes specialized MTs can be a must, mostly something designed for a particular job or a mix of jobs that works well together.

Electrician USA. Multi tools are not used by electricians as much as you think, because they are not insulated. Standard residential wire is 14-2, 12-2, 10-2 romex. That's14, 12, and 10 AWG solid copper. Anything larger then that is beyond a multitool. You can cut these wires individually or cut the romex of 3 wires at one time. I have cut 14-2 romex with my Leatherman PST and Kick. But you need to cut from one side of the wire and then the other because the cutters are not wide enough to cut the whole romex or all 3 wires at one time. I do not cut more then 14 AWG solid copper wire with my multitool. Stranded wire is a good test for multitool cutters to see if you can get a clean cut through all the strands. Regular lamp cord up to 14 gauge stranded. I do not cut steel wire with my multitool. That would be up to the indiviual. Hope that helps.

Dominick you know what you should have in your multitool arsenal or at least consider is the SOG Paratool and Power Plier. I'm a huge Leatherman fan but I like a couple of tool from each company. The earlier SOGs are very well made. Not saying they're bad now. They had a nice weight and a useful toolset. I can have appreciation for almost any multitool. The 90's brought good competition to market. People love Leatherman's breakout Original Pocket Survival Tool which can out in 1983 and the Super Tool in 93 or 94, I love the tip up design of the Paratool, very unique and was designed by knife maker Blackie Collins. The Power Plier introduced the "compound leverage" designed by SOG founder Spencer Frazier. What makes the Power Plier different to is it came with a Robertson square bit driver. Gerber had the Multi Provisional Tool for the Army and Mr. Kincaid from HVAC BUDGET told me the Multi Plier was very well made and popular. I'm not a fan of the Gerber Sliding plier design but that's just me. In your opinion, is the GOAT multitool as well made as some of the tools I have mentioned? Does it have the capability of making a firm statement to the multitool industry?

    • @maxlvledc
