A quick video covering the repair of a dead (no LED - device not detected) XBOX 360 Wireless Adapter. This adapter is used to connect an XBOX 360 Controller to a Windows PC.
I threw mine in the trash this morning, went to work and then saw your video on my frontpage. Fished it out of the bin, removed the fuse, soldered a solid piece of wire in and voila it works again. Thank you very much mate
That is awesome!
Dude! Saved me $40 by not having to buy a janky third party adapter! Thanks a ton. I literally had thrown the adapter away earlier today after taking it apart and not seeing anything obvious, and then on a whim decided to search TH-cam later and discovered your video. Thanks a ton!
My method was not pretty but it seems to be working for now. I just put a big ol blob of solder over the two points and it seems to have done the trick.
Thanks! This fixed my receiver!
When I saw the video my first thought was "Man. This guy has a huge soldering iron." But then I opened my receiver up and realized how tiny everything was on the inside.
I wish I would have bypassed the fuse first before doing a rewire of the usb cable. I was on my second one of these receivers and didn't want to spend the money on another and your video helped me get it working again. Thanks. Same as @coolfizzin I fixed with a little bit of solder to bypass the f1 fuse.
Great you got it working! Just bear in mind that that fuse is supposed to be "a fuse", in that if something on there shorts, it could damage the PC / PC PSU. So a solder blob will get you up and running, but its better to perhaps get an 0402 or 0603 sized 0 ohm link from Digikey / Mouser / RS / Farnell / eBay!
@@GadgetUK164 understood and appreciate the extra info. Will order one of those today.
I know this video is 3 years old at this point, but you've saved me buying yet another receiver. Thanks!
Some more videos coming soon - getting a few smaller ones out of the way first! That gold rim around the outside doesn't appear to be the antenna btw! Looks just like a ground rail.
I just wanted to say thank you man you saved my old controller, I lost all hope after it didn't power on and every store told me that they don't sell those adapters anymore. I opened an old mouse and found the 0 ohm link there, I don't know how long will the fix last but thanks to you I now how to repair it.
MAN i love you .. there was literally no option to buy new reciever in my country .. i had an old motherboard from back in the day that i kept for parts (one of those cases that u never use) but what did u know there was lots and lots of the same fuses on it so i took one replaced the one from the reciever and it works. I have never touched a soldering iron in my life before so it was really really hard to do it it was so small :D but in the end it works THANKS .. i love my old 360 controller its better than the ps4 or xbox one
Thanks so much for this video! I managed to fix my wireless adapter using it. I'm not very skilled at soldering, but it worked out. I simply bypassed the bad fuse with a ball of solder.
Thank you very much for the video, I also got my adapter repaired. However, I was able to replace the SMD fuse (design 0603 with the marking D = 250 mA quick-acting) with a fine-wire fuse 400 mA design 5x20 mm. Two wires were soldered to the small glass bulb fuse and the whole thing was covered with shrink tubing. The wires on the back are soldered to the pins of F1, but the fuse is fixed with some glue on the front along the circuit board near the USB cable. The plastic mechanism of the button must remain free. The fine fuse really fits from the available space. I also measured the current draw of the circuit, which was 85mA. Since these small glass bulb fuses are more common, it's easier to get hold of one. I would prefer a fuse over a jumper wire/0 ohm resistor as the USB port protection is maintained.
Seen a lot of these dead before. Bought a bunch when I saw a fix online many years ago. :) Thanks for keeping these alive, Chris!
I fixed mine before there was any online fix ;) I had it early after they were released, and it lasted approx 1 week before it died lol.
@@GadgetUK164 I probably only used mine once before it died but I had no idea when it happened (was well over a year before I discovered it). Looked online and saw I wasn't alone! These seem particularly fragile.
Fun fact: the original package promised Wireless Racing Wheel with Force Feedback support even though that never happened.
thank you. saved my evening. I just made a solder bridge :X
Worked fine for me too but only for around 4months it happened again I bought the new Xbox controller now, modded it and I am very happy now 😊
Yes I'm interested in seeing your PC build mate.
Never seen that little fella device before. A very fiddly video but once again, it's a simple fix for Chris.
Really sorry to hear you were made redundant but I really hope the new job is going well, and it's brilliant that your still making this videos for us lucky people.
Thanks Jamie =D
thanks man i got mine fixed! jumped the fuse with solder
This saved it from being thrown into the trash, thank you very much!
Thanks, fixed my borrowed broken receiver with a straight piece of wire in place of F1 (which when tested had no continuity). It works.
bro i cant believe that actually worked, thanks. I am so relieved now.
@@savionramsundar1935 yes and still working one year on.
@@Noidy312 nice!
Good video, thanks. Mine died yesterday and it was also the little fuse that had blown. Seems like this is a common issue. I ended up just shorting the fuse pads to get it back up and running.
Brilliant! It looks very hard to buy a replacement but I was able to fix mine after watching this video. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Excellent, a couple of nice short vids Chris. Just about to watch the alarm battery vid as I had to do this last year, and I was worried about it going off and disturbing the whole street. Haha noticed the watch as well ;-)
Thanks Vince =D Haha at spotting the watch! I can understand your concern about annoying the street - that was my worry. The other worry is that you cannot stop it from going off once you've finished the work lol. That was one of the reasons I went with this approach, coupled with the fact there are like 70 or so wires in there for all the sensors and power inputs etc etc. It would have been a nightmare to silently shut it all down and remove / reinstall the PCB. Plus I was worried about it reseting to factory settings and not being able to set it back up again - I am sure I would have been OK as I have enough documentation on it but it would have been painful...
Have built many pc's in the past so would be interested in seeing yours, always something i like watching. Nice repair as usual! :), I bet its suprising how many of those get thrown out.
Thanks for this vid! Short and sweet and saved me having to plonk down money to replace mine!
No problem 👍
Thank you very much! You helped me enormous! Just brigded the zero ohm (F1) and it worked. I love you! :D
Thanks! Just note that its better to fit a zero ohm link as they are probably rated to 1/4 or 1/8 of a watt. If a short occurs it could kill the USB port. That said, USB ports detect shorts and often handle it by isolating the power - so probably not a worry.
Thank you for sharing your knowlede, you safed me 20 bucks. I'm investing these in futher soldering gear. I could replace the 0 Ohm bridge with solder.
Great video Chris keep them coming love these videos 👍
Thanks man. Saved my adapter from trash :)
No problem 👍
worked by bridging the F1 - 0hm with a drop of solder
Great quick repair, thanks for posting!
perfect video, helped me with my issue. Me and my dad have decided to just put some soldering on top of 0 ohm link. Receiver works so far :DDDDD
Nice work!
Thank you mate . Fixed my Microsoft XBOX 360 Wireless Adapter not working because of a dead fuse . Year 2022 .
OMG Thanks!! I was just about to buy a new controller!
Wish someone would make a small version of this.
insulation on the cable is necessary?
Thank you very much. Iv'e just repaired a Microsoft adapter by replacing the 0 ohm resistor. Great!!
Would love to see the new PC build please.
I feel embarrassed now that I threw my dead one in the bin without even looking at it 🤣
Well done mate
Haha =D I think most people would assume they wouldn't be repairable - this is a super common issue with them!
@@GadgetUK164 At least I know now for when my new one breaks :)
Had mine for years from what i see mine has 2011 on it, had it since new great to know what can go wrong ,now i just need another controller i gave mine to my sisters son with my xbox 360 so i have no controller for driving games now.
@@GadgetUK164 can I just bridge it with some wire if I don't have a 0ohm link around?
I just tried to use my adapter and when I plugged it into my pc I got nothing, so I found your video and sure enough that fuse on the bottom was bad, I removed it and made a bridge and it's working again, I wonder what's causing this fuse to blow? and if we leave it bridged will it burn up other components? Thanks for making this video, it took me less then 10 minutes to get my adapter back to working.
A slightly bad connection can cause the fuse to pop. Just bridging it risks damaging the USB side of your computer should it fail. Just buy an 0805 0 ohm link from eBay.
Nice little fix 🙂👍
Short Video, but very helpful!
Thanks!
I used a tiny line of kitchen aluminum foil and some insulating tape because I've never soldered anything and I'm afraid I could destroy it for good. It's working just fine but do you think it could cause a fire if I leave it plugged it?
It's never a good idea to bridge a fuse position with wire or foil! That said, USB ports have protection for over current, so it will likely never be a safety risk. Personally I would rather use a single strand of very fine wire - perhaps 0.1mm thick, or just search for a zero ohm link component of the right size (0805?) on eBay. Those are usually rated to 1/4 watt or 1/8 watt
Thankx i repair it but without detail, only by wire. It broken after when i try to use reciever with ps3.
this works thanks!
Yes, please introduce your new PC to your audience!
OK, will do at some point soon hopefully!
Yes, I'd love to see it!
Very Helpful! Good to know. Thanks. But I dont think that is the problem with mine. :(
muito obrigado era isto mesmo🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I replaced F1 with a copper wire, and it works perfectly. Thanks!
That will work, but note it is a safety feature. If the device fails short, it could kill the USB port its connected to.
@@GadgetUK164 Then I'd better get a 0 ohm resistor as soon as possible. Thank you so much for your insight.
What I did back in 2006 when I first got a 360 was bought a Logitech i think device which looked like a mini router, had 2 aerials and a ethernet connector, was a nightmare to setup on Windows 7 and requried something like I.E 6 to get into the setup age which basically was a simple page asking for a SSID and password, I think it was limited to WEP. Think it cost about £20 at the time but went up to about £50 when the official Xbox device came out then back to to basically nothing when WPA became the standard. But didn't bother me as 2010 onwards used LAN.
What I forgot to say was I used a cheap alternative to a official product lol. I guess thats the same for controller adaptors.
This wireless adapter is for the controller, not the 360 itself
@@dailyskeptic I know.
Thanks a lot. That was my problem too. :)
Glad I could help!
what is the name of the part that ws installed? sorry im not an electrician, just want to have my receiver working back again, it is now 12 years, it broke today , just want to use my 360s controllers they are jewels
It's a zero ohm link. Probably rated to 1/8 of a watt. eg. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334514919945?hash=item4de2a49a09:g:8EUAAOSwDiJi4UgM&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4IXoJM6PEJRg10KdOBQjsF3Nt9orB9stM5ZBzt03SOVdPrUcez%2BGkl3J6%2FFKiCeWQb5AEXZM0bXTK4ztdx2JqXq5kSSL6Asol6LnyHPQ%2FIYWO9RG8rtjSUUB68WzZ0YkPQG0bxS%2FosbMgjm1bVsQj6wuH34F0CPuZAKLaQac0PxcWLwpe%2FwQ5NdI9ocGi7NlZCohgU7LaOzZXAQ%2B%2B7B%2Fqfxju5ozrV07Wa3G5D8tFiyjMNEsfOlOz9KEZGmY87qd8sKGRU5IubiW44DmyfcpTGG6UCY8w9VuToh%2F%2BIMz%2Fc46%7Ctkp%3ABFBM_KD91vZi
@@GadgetUK164 tysm on my way to purchase it
The only issue I am having with my Xbox360 controller to PC device is software, constantly needing to be reinstalled.
thx. i repair too
SMD 0603 or other size ?
0603 would likely be OK I think!
Спасибо тебе добрый человек)
Do any of you know the rating of the faulty F1 fuse? I will short it for now, but eventually it would be good to replace it with a fuse of the correct rating again.
The original component is just a zero ohm link. It's probably rated at around 1/8 of a watt.
Very Very Very 👍
Подскажите, пожалуйста, как называется данный предохранитель, какие у него характеристики? Я не владею английским, поэтому прошу прощения, если ответ был в видео.
Nice video
Hmm my one of these is a clone.. I wonder if the fix works on 3rd party ones too. :)
i soldered wit tin in f1 and nothing happend, when i connect the adapter it leaves mi pc without sound and y have to restar
In some instances that fuse may have blown because something on the adapter failed. It could be a bad IC.
Oh damn i thrown away mine! It had the same problem
hi. I bought a used wireless receiver (microsoft original), plugged it into my Win10 PC, and it shows up as wireless receiver, but when i press the button, it starts blinking, I press the contoller button and it starts blinking as well, but never syncs up. Do you think the receiver is broken, or do i need to install drivers myself despite that the receiver is apparently recognized?
If it's powering up but not syncing, there's probably something wrong with the antenna part of it. Maybe a failed transistor if you're lucky!
@@GadgetUK164 I figured it out, it's stupid by Microsoft. So I had this plug & charge cable, and hooked up the Controller to the PC as well, only then did Win10 install not only the Plug&Charge thing but also the XBox Wireless Controller itself. Now I can remove the cable and it still works. stupid, but whatever, it's Microsoft. So installing the Receiver is not enough, you gotta somehow also install the Controller itself. Any Idea how to without this plug and charge cable?
When I plug in my wireless receiver my computer says "Device Descriptor Failed"
That might mean there's a fault with the device. You could try connecting it via a powered hub.
You are the fucking man!!!!
I dissaproove... not enough GadgetUK AMSR in this video... no dirty talk or rubbing ;) ( some minor tapping doh so i forgive you! )
Haha =D
I can't get mine open!!! EVERYONE IS FIXING THEIRS AND I CAN'T FIX MINE. Just want to put a ball of solder on there and call it a day
You have to prize them open with plastic or metal spudgers! They can be hard to get into - the shell is glued basically from what I remember.
thx i save 15$
