Hi guys and welcome to my new Video, today i want to Show you how to build your own selfmade wireless Receiver for xbox 360 Controllers.

" Things you will need:
•Soldering Iron
•Soldering Flux
•An Xbox 360 RF Module (Ring of light board at the front of the Xbox)
•An old USB you don't care about
•5v Diode
•Driver for the receiver
•A brain
•OPTIONAL: Play and charge kit to sync controller to board anytime you want to
Before we go on, I have to warn you that you MUST sync your controller to the RF Module via Xbox before you move on. You don't have to worry about this if you have a play and charge.
The revisions of the RF Boards matter for Windows 8 but not for Windows 7. Xenon RF Boards are Rev.A, and at one point they revised it and made Rev.B. If you guys use a Rev.B board you will get better results in range and overall performance and of course W8 synch-ability. "
To sync a controller either; A) sync the controller by plugging in the RF Module in an Xbox and sync with the Xbox's sync button, or B) Plug in the controller via play and charge while the ghetto receiver is in.

+Jack Maday Look, the Xbox 360 has had a major hardware bug which caused most of the batches for the first few years to die, so there's a shit ton of dead ones around, they're worth only a few $, and they're good enough for this project.
+Siana Gearz right i literally have almost 20 dead phat 360's laying around. i used to 'repair' them but as we all know that was an uphill battle.

Dude seriously I don't feel like going to the ONLY place in my area to buy a diode as radioshack is VERY far from my home... I have a diode and you said I can use ANY diode... I have some 1N5392 diodes laying around and a board... will it work? or kill it? I killed my first one trying the led idea this is my LAST BOARD. The diodes rating is IN5392 Rectifier Diode 1.5A 100V

Did this shit and it worked!
First I used an LED I ripped from a broken speaker. It probably wasn't the right voltage because the RF wouldn't power on although the LED was shining bright. I went for a shop and bought a 5V zener diode for €0,20, soldered that shit right up and it works like a charm. Super smash on PC here I come!

Come to think of it, this is actually great if you don't want a receiver dangling out of your PC, making it great for HTPC build. Just shove it somewhere inside.

Guys you should be using two rectifier diodes in series on the usb 5V rail to drop it to ~3.3V that the board runs off. Or use a zener diode to create a regulated 3.3V source.

This is because in the xbox the rail supplied to this RF unit is 3.3V. Unsure how much protection microsoft built into the unit, but 5V could significantly decrease the life span.

Ah, I knew saving my "reject" 360 chassis (ones that refused to stay "fixed" after using 5mm bolts to clamp down the heatsinks to fix the RROD) would pay off! Thanks!
To anyone still trying this;
You have to use a diode or diodes that lower the 5v red wire to 3.3v. Because if you feed 5v to the board you can fry the controller.
I suspect that's why so many people are complaining in the comments.

@@emesito Should work, as long as the voltage doesn't exceed the 3.3v you should be fine.
@@thyaguster I changed my mind and i'm currently using one the diodes that comes in the disc drive (AMS 3.3, since I have a slim)

Wow, thanks! Saved me a few bucks. I already had everything. I had been given 2 rrod xboxs. I'm a tech junky so I had a few bad USB cables and a few LEDs. I was able to use a red LED to drop the voltage to around 3v. I placed it in a plastic box, painted it black, and outlined the Xbox stencil for the led. Looks great!

I've had a dead 360 just sitting on my floor in a corner for years. Well my pc wireless 360 receiver just died and this bideo just gave me some great last use for my old dead 360 :D
I haven't tried it yet because of the screws, It's hard to find the right driver for it here in my country well wish me luck.. did you try it without a diode?

I recylce broken/damaged tech for stuff like this too, and loved this tutorial. Personally I would just buy and RF adapter, but loved how to learn to do this anyway.

Thanks, worked in 2023 on windows 11. The driver install process was a tiny bit different though

@@CptJunior In device manager I went to "other devices" and selected the unknown device > update driver > browse my computer for drivers > let me pick from a list of available drivers. In the list scroll to the bottom and find "xbox 360 peripherals" and select it, finally select xbox 360 wireless receiver from the new menu and install it.

@DebProdigy It won't. I just plugged it back into the xbox 360 and synced a controller that way. But once you sync you won't have to do it again.
@DebProdigy Yeah although I can't be 100% certain, if they were already synced and you didn't desync them they should be fine.
I can't get mine to work on windows 10... It just shows up in device manager as Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) or (Port Reset Failed)...
Any ideas? I can't install the drivers...

Hi, great Video, worked perfect for me, but after a reboot i no longer get Unknown Device in Other devices, now it is an Unknown device under USB controlers and does not allow me to update driver with Xusb21 ,, Says " not compatible" any ideas? thank in advance

That mod only powers the controller. It will not be able to communicate with the computer.

when I plug in my receiver, my computer says "USB malfanctioned" and the receiver doesn't show up as "Unknown Device" but as "Unknown USB devie Device Desprictor Failed". Can anyone assist me with this problem please?

Eh... I guess it's cool, but you would need a broken or unused 360 to do this. Might as well buy the receiver as I doubt people got broken 360s they can just take apart to do this.

i agree, but for me i actually did have an rrod xbox that i was trying to flash, when it just got to the point of no return i took it apart and then found this guide, its not really helpful for anyone but console modders...which if you aren't one you shouldn't be doing anything like this anyway! haha
Also, you can get really cheap RROD Xbox's on Ebay or something. My friends got like 10 of them lying in parts in his attic.
exactly, found an auction on ebay where he had stacks of them for $10 each, they are unfixable permitatly without a reflow/reball which is hard and takes ages, even then it can and probably will fail again (slow clap for microsoft)

I'm a bit lost with the use of a zenner diode, especially since it's in series with the 5V wire. Could it be that you need to drop the voltage down to almost 3.3V? Or?
i made all the procedure correctly my windows recognize the device ok the drivers ok but no flashing lights or anything on the module.What am i doing wrong?

pluurep unfortunately I don't think that you can as the chip is very different. I tried when I looked up the slim rf pin out and it did not work.

thank you, this is awesome. it can be made from every day household items, i had two broken xboxes so getting that part wasn't hard, and i even made a little case for it. had to sync the controller beforehand tho because i dont have a play and charge kit, but it works, its cheap, only cost me .99 (and that's just the cost of the diode)

I did exactly the same as you did, except I used an LED instead of a diode. My main problem now is that when I want to install the drivers like you show in your video, it say's it can't find any compatible drivers. The device info tells me there's a Code 43 error, which seems to be some USB connection error.....
Any thoughts? I would love for this to work!

I read that both the xbox controler and normal mouse and keyboard for pc all use the 2.4 GHz frequency. Is it also possible to overwrite the software on an wireless reciever of an old mouse/keyboard and put the driver of a Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver on it and get it to work?
+Drag0nvil i might be a little late to this but 2.4 GHz is a rather standard frequency, nothing interferes really since it's intelligence enough to keep the signals a couple of KHz apart from each other so your speakers don't turn off when you press the A button

i made this last year and its still holding up strong, thank you for the video. also i download the windows 10 update and it could not read the receiver. i just went back and re-did the device manager process and its works like new. Thanks again for the video!

Thanks for the tutorial! Still works in 2022! Windows 10 comes with the drivers for this now, so you don't have to download them. Scroll all the way down to "Xbox 360 Peripherals" and it'll be in there. I used 3 standard 1A diodes in series to drop the voltage from 5V to ~3.3V. Worked first try! Time to play some local co-op!
I've got this thing connected with a voltage divider, voltage across the resistor is 3.7v when connected to my computer, but nothing shows up in device manager. Did yours work as soon as you plugged it in? Also on Windows 10.
@@EntropicCheese I wouldn't recommend using a resistor voltage divider to get the required 3.3 volts. The resistors will only allow a small amount of current to flow, not enough for the device to power up and function. 3 diodes is the easiest solution and it allows the device to sink as much current as it wants. Windows will make the device connected sound when your device gets the proper amount of power and is able to boot up.

@@YOanimator Hey it was the current, and I got it working and i followed your steps to get the driver installed. How did you get your controller synced?
@@EntropicCheese Great! My controller was already synced to the board when I removed it from the Xbox. If you need to sync your controller you will have to temporarily plug the unit back into the Xbox, boot her up and sync like normal from there. There may be another way, but this is the only that I'm aware of.

It's always integrated in Windows. In W10, Go to the "drivers" setting of the device, Update Driver, Browse computer for Drivers, Let me pick from a list of drivers, and almost at the end of the list, you will see Xbox drivers. This will only work for OFFICIAL xbox wireless modules. For unofficial ones, this used to work, but it doesn't work anymore after some W10 updates. Now you have to use a hacked driver (literally 1 line change in the driver code) and it's a pretty elaborate process. On the plus side, the driver used to de-configure itself super frequently and now it works perfectly 100% of the time.
Hey man, I did the steps and it works, and gets to the Unrecognized Device popup, but I can't add the driver manually to work with the receiver, Windows gives me an error telling me that the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows driver isn't compatible with my device and I should get one correct for my Windows version even though it is correct. I have Windows 7 x64. What do I do?
