  • Yesterday evening (13th March) MPs voted on whether or not they supported a no deal Brexit. But things weren't that simple with Yvette Cooper putting forward the Spelman Amendment. Ultimately the house voted against no deal, saying they wouldn't want to see a hard brexit in any situation; going further than the original vote May set out.

      Darren Skjoelsvold OK cool. First of all, I still don’t fully understand what Brexit is and the motivation behind it.

    • @darrenskjoelsvold
      @darrenskjoelsvold 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@raeanna33 So Brexit is the UK dissolving their charter with the EU. So the EU or European Union is kind of like a pact or a treaty which extends rights across borders from one country to another. Once you're in Europe, you can basically just drive across the continent as long as you're going from EU country to EU country and even driving between Sweden and Norway is pretty painless since those two countries have a unique relationship.
      The thing is the EU also governs defense and trade agreements. The UK imports a LOT of goods. From food stuffs to automobiles to friggin toaster ovens and the trade deal they have as part of the EU means that all those goods travel into the UK quickly without having to go through a protracted customs inspection.
      Basically when you think of the EU, consider if the individual states in the US were even MORE individualized and the federal government instead of being a centralized body was actually a treaty and contract of cooperation. So Minnesota would have a trade and free travel agreement with Wisconsin that was enforced by the trade and cooperation treaty instead of being different states in the same country. So the end effect is the same (you drive across the bong bridge if you're traveling from Duluth to Superior) but instead what is supporting that free travel and commerce is different. The EU countries also share a common currency (the Euro) except for certain members like the UK and Sweden who retained their own currencies the Pound and the Krone respectively.
      OK so lets then move back to the vote that changed everything. The UK decided to hold a vote where the people would decide if they wanted the UK to leave the EU. The government didn't think the people would be stupid enough to vote to leave and held an election instead of doing their FRIGGIN JOBS. By that I mean that parliament could have voted down movements to leave the EU but having the people vote it down sped up matters for them though and they were lazy and decided to shoot down those individuals who btw were funded by foreign countries in part but meh. The parliament thought they could just let the people vote but having a vote meant that there was a period of campaign and the probrexit people did a LOT of campaigning.
      Typically that campaign was full of half truths and misleading information but that's sort of the way of things these days. And without anybody calling out the probrexit side on their BS they got away with a lot of it.
      Next step was the vote. Never underestimate the idiocy of the masses. A person is a wonderful intelligent creature but people are panicky and prone to making terrible decisions when in a herd mentality. Individual voters voted FOR the exit thinking it would be ok because their neighbors would vote to stay. So you had a situation where many people who voted for it wanted to have a do over but YOU DON'T GET A DO OVER, IT'S AN ELECTION NOT A GAME! sorry..
      So the people voted to leave the EU and this causes a LOT of problems, not least of which is the current peace in Ireland. Now the current tenuous peace is mostly only held together because there is no border between Ireland and Northern Ireland thanks to BOTH being in the EU. (again back to those borders being eliminated) You see, in Ireland (the isle not the country) because part of it is a member of the UK and another part is a sovereign nation they would have a border however with the UK being in the EU then that means that the two nations who are one common people (Norther Irish don't see themselves as anything other than Irish after all) could coexist peacefully.
      Now with a border we may return to the bloodshed that you're likely only somewhat familiar with because of a song by the Cranberries, Zombies. You know that part where she's talking about with their tanks and their bombs and their guns. She's talking about Ireland where a terrorist organization (yes a terrorist organization lets get real here) called the IRA killed countless people because of nationalism. You know that old chestnut that got the Nazis rolling and is our own current President's position? Yeah, nationalism... Which was actually also one of the factors in the Brexit election.
      So in short, Brexit is the British people's response to their parliament not doing their job and telling a bunch of crazy nationalists funded by foreign countries to go stuff it and thus allowing STUPID people to vote to basically ruin their own nation. The only consolation is that after laughing at us for voting in Trump, they screwed themselves over even MORE because this doesn't even have checks and balances mitigating the damage and will likely lead to disaster on a monumental scale that they'll never recover from. Lets be honest, they don't have the resources which was the whole motivation for the British Empire in the first place and without some kind of trade deal to keep the resources keeping the tiny island nation afloat (see what I did there?) they will have uncontrolled inflation and even potentially a flare up in hostilities between Northern Ireland and Ireland again which will be bloody.
      So Brexit in short is Parliament not doing their job and getting screwed over because of it and dooming the entire nation into turmoil and because they assumed that their people would somehow be smart enough to not fall for nationalists funded by foreign powers but in history people have NEVER been smart enough to not fall for that and us Americans can at least take solace that now WE'RE not the stupidest nation on Earth. No our allies across the "pond" are indeed the biggest morons on the planet.

    • @raeanna33
      @raeanna33 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Darren Skjoelsvold wow. Thank you for summarizing that up for me. I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know a lot about the EU beforehand. I have, of course, heard about Ireland and Northern Ireland, but did not understand the consequences of Brexit for them.
      Of course, we see this happening once again. Nationalism at its absolute worst. The US is, in my opinion, on the brink of a civil war, but after heading your explanation, it definitely sounds worse off “across the pond.”
      So. Parliament. Are they basically bought off like Congress, turning the nation into a corporatocracy? I mean, I just can’t wrap my head around the notion of leaving the EU. Did they just not think about the consequences? Obviously the masses didn’t. We all know very well that the majority of the world’s population are incapable of critically thinking and analyzing, so I get that. I just still don’t quite understand parliament’s motivation. Was it just because it was a promise Theresa May made? Similarly to Donald Trump’s wall, where he is only trying to do it because it was a campaign promise?

      @@dobbsmill3676 I think it's May who really outplayed them instead, hitting them with a Zugzwang. She lost the opportunity to force them to choose between her Deal and No deal Brexit, sure, but she now has standing to force them to choose between her Deal and No Brexit, instead. Since they voted against Leaving with or without a deal, she can argue they effectively voted against Leaving at all.

    • @dancorps1388
      @dancorps1388 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KerbalFacile not really. Parement is currently split 5 different ways, with noone in a majority. On top of that the majority coalition only have 13 more votes then the other coalition of party. That easy to sway. Another thing is that May said she would step down if her party lost majority in the last election. She didn't. Which means that the second party have a lovely scapegoat to blame nothing happening with Brexit. Of course they are against Brexit at all, and want to stay. Which means more people are wanting to stay. Which makes those 13 seats from earlier easier to sway. I have no doubt that the 4 vote differences is cause by people from the majority switching to the minority. So when she says it will be no Brexit versus her deal, it the minority won that round.

MPs do not want her deal, they do not want no deal - and as the EU is not going to give them a different deal, they are practically saying that they do not want Brexit, but at the same time there is no majority and no time for another referendum, which would be questionable anyway, as it can be very well argued that this would be undemocratic. The MPs are all just in for their own olitical gains, May might be the only one in there who actually does things in the interest of the UK and not just in the interest of her own party/career...

I may not agree with a lot of the BS that comes out of his mouth, but it is certainly entertaining to watch the media make themselves look like idiots over his comments. I am not sure if I should be horrified about that notion considering he is the president of the largest economy in the world or astounded that it actually worked to get into office. It is quite sad, however, that our Congressional meetings often have a similar "brexit" feel to them whenever AOC brings up her ridiculous new green deal (if you have not heard of it look it up. its hilarious!) in that "we want to achieve these ridiculous goals but have no idea how to do it. please give us more money, oh and don't worry about the details or facts, those don't matter" sort of way.
