How Bercow Changed the Future of Brexit - Brexit Explained

  • Until yesterday there had been rumours that May was planning to bring back her deal for a third meaningful vote. Then Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, changed that. He declared that she wasn't able to bring back the same deal again without substantial changes.

      Mr Bercow disobeys parliamentary convention when it suits his remain views. Like when his own legal clerks told him he could NOT allow one amendment pro remain and disallow another that was pro Brexit.
      Then suddenly , parliamentary precedent is THE MOST important factor. Even when it date from the 17th century!
      How can you not see that this is corrupt? Utterly, totally put the bastard in prison, Tammany hall corrupt?
      This is the true corrosive, toxic effect of the EU on society. Everything is now viable to defeat Brexit. Corruption, undermining democracy, a mad parliament imposing dictatorship. People talking denying suffrage except to the elites. For what? A trade pact with delusions of grandeur which has been on the slide for the last 10 years, unemployment, austerity, national bankruptcies, rise of extremist politics, and you would chuck our democracy under a fucking bus for THAT?

      Prorogation of Parliament is not the same as dissolution for a new election. It requires a majority vote of the Cabinet and all open motions, bills, and amendments will lapse (at a time when Goverment is already in a pinch to pass all the necessary Brexit legislation). Carry-over votes would be required for each to make it to a new parliamentary session which will only commence with a State Opening including a new Queen's Speech. Until then Parliament comes to a complete standstill (mere days before the current Brexit deadline of March 29).

      I haven't .. combed through the whole width and range of British press over this case, since I value my sanity too much. But I'm imagining that not all of them would mention that Bercow of course would be completely out of line - if - he had made a ruling on this without being prodded to do so by a member of the House. And that the reasoning behind the ruling is at least as important as that the precedent for it exists. I mean, in normal circumstances, everyone would see right away that the ruling was not made at a very early time in the process, or as a response to May fielding the proposal, so that it's not actually hostile to the government in that sense, or in any sense, far from it. In the same way, the ruling could have been made much earlier, had that been appropriate like he says, if he wanted to actually sabotage the government. While the "annoyance" with the government just comes from them pushing until a ruling would have to be made -- which then really is running the clock, just as the opposition has accused them of, which prompts the request for the ruling.
      So Bercow neither helps or sabotages anyone, but simply produces a ruling on request for an item brought up by a member. That he does this without sounding like he's about to fall asleep is undoubtedly also to the benefit of everyone.

    Bercow did not change anything.
    It is a long standing rule which broke May's misbegotten tactic. A tactic based on intransparency, ambiguity and dereliction of securing parliamentary support in due time. It was clear from the beginning that such an approach will fail in the UK. As the UK is a parliamentary system. Did the Prime Minister not know that ? Or did she really think that she will be able to put forward the same motion again and again until the result will please her ? By Jove, what an uninformed person !

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Old Monty
      The referendum showed a very close call.
      The UK is divided to the core about this matter.
      And yes, leave means a fundamental change to society, remain a continuation of the current situation.
      The leave camp is divided in protectionists and globalists, two contradictory standpoints, and remain sits in between.
      So in fact there is no majority at all.
      That is why the government should have looked at consensus, what policy can get a very wide support in the population.
      They did not.

      It's rare for me to reply on comments here, but I believe it's necessary this time. I have read your views on the current situation that we've been dealt and fully respect the opinion. Going back to your point on invoking article 61 of the Magna Carta...I can firmly declare myself and the entire country; halfwits and a bunch of zombie-like buffoons with no grasp of the actual turmoil we are in, if we ever revisited that time. It would be a step backwards in search for hope rather than the answers we so desperately need right now.
      Just to put this out there, the European elections are in May (23*-26*), Mrs Theresa May wanted her deal to be accepted before April, giving the country some time to stitch up the last bit of loose ends with the European Community. however, she's had a Parliament with no bravado to save our country, so they all bottled it entirely...on a nationwide emergency. over the last two years it seems they've all been blindfolded by the Europeans and told to open them when Mr. Donald Tusk claps his hands.
