      The fantasy behind all the parliament comedy is that they try to vote for a deal?? a deal!! the EU says that any deal is plausible after exiting the EU.. so you eider left without a deal or you implement the backstop you pay the 39 billions ect ect and then... when the EU have the money you preside apply the deal, if.... the EU have not problems with.
      I totally understand the UK is really humiliating but if is not backstop in place then there is no deal..
      this haven’t gotten trough in parliament jet..
      _Option one the backstop ergo not crush out and a sort of long staying before new deal is reached.
      The EU guarantee the 39 billions and the UK not to crush out.
      _Option two not backstop, you don’t pay a penny, the EU get the UK in international court CIADI, you crush out. And you'll negotiate a deal as 3 country
      There is not much debate around is really simple any outcome is shit for the UK any... and no one won to have the responsibility to implemented.

      That is not it. May is stubborn but not stupid.
      She needs to placate a base that believes that the UK is in a position to impose terms on the EU. She also knows full well that this is impossible. Her deal is terrible if you believe that the UK could easily get much more concessions from the EU. So this is how many Brits wish to view matters: a bad deal as a result of May's piss-poor negotiation skills.
      From a European perspective, the UK can either accept this deal or leave with no-deal and live to regret the consequences, regardless of which Englander negotiated the deal. From that perspective, May is right: it is either this deal, no-deal Brexit, indefinite delay, or revocation of article 50. Inasmuch as she is determined to deliver Brexit as part of her premiership and she wishes to avoid no-deal exit, she has to insist on _this_ deal.

      It's an antiquated system. Every time the vote is close, all MPs have to leave the room and go through separate doors depending on whether they vote yes or no. Then, the number of people in both lobbies is counted and the result presented to the house. Of course, electronic voting would bring this 20 minute procedure down to 2 minutes. It would be the reasonable thing to do. But "reason" isn't something that comes to mind when thinking about British parliamentary democracy.

    Why didn't Parliament hold indicative votes immediately after the referendum? For that matter, it would have made a lot of sense to hold indicative votes before Brexit so it would be more clear what people were voting for. And how in the world is Theresa May still PM?

    • @joefox9875
      @joefox9875 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular MPs have limited power to propose legislation. Most of the power is vested in the PM and cabinet, and to address your points:
      1) They assumed they would win the referendum
      2) Having lost the referendum, they did not wish to seem weak by asking what anyone else wanted again
      3) All politicians likely want Theresa May to take the blame for Brexit, so it would be great if she could hang on a few more weeks, ideally making a few more aloof speeches

      Joe Fox, I’m admittedly coming at this from an outside perspective as an American living in the UK, so thank you for your response. I understand that all from a technical and political standpoint, but the complete lack of strategic policy-driven planning for something this important just blows my mind. And why does May hold on to PM anyway? The writing is on the wall that she is the scapegoat for everyone. If she cares about her reputation, she could call Conservative MP’s bluff by threatening to resign if her deal fails.

    Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that the EU holds all (or at least most) of the cards here. All this talk about getting longer extensions and getting a better deal from the house seem to ignore the fact that the EU has already said this is the best deal the UK is going to get, and they seem to be against a delay that stretches into the EU election. So, the house is in charge now, but how has that really made things better? Don’t they have the same constraints (from the EU) the PM has?

    • @Joesolo13
      @Joesolo13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah that's pretty much right.
      Brexit will be rough on Britain, and the EU doesn't really have reason to bend over backwards.
      So leave will be annoyed and remain will be pissed because neither of them get all of what they want.
      Remain obviously doesn't want to go at all.
      Leave wants more British control over Britain's trade and such but if they have any kind of deal they're still ceding some, even a lot of control when losing all say in the matter.

      Don is right ! I'd add that the "DIVISION" part is the announcement that this process is going to take place. Notice that just before, the speaker asks the MPs to say yes or no. If there is a clear majority at that point then there is no point in doing the long formal vote and the amendment passes or not just like that.

    • @bobbob465
      @bobbob465 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Here's as full a description as I can provide.
      "Division!" = "I can't tell by the voices, so we're going to count votes!"
      We do 'divisions' in the US as well, at pretty much every level of government. Some boards/councils/etc. have members raise their hands to show Yes or No, or do roll call with each member stating their vote when called (the US Senate does this) or install electronic systems for members to push a button and have the vote recorded (a lot of state legislatures run this way).
      "Clear the Lobby!" = "Get our vote counting system ready!"
      "[Lock the doors!]" (We never get to see this one, so I'm guessing at the exact words.) = "Time is up for everyone to show up to vote. Lock the doors and start counting!"
      The House of Commons has a...gleefully antiquated way of counting votes, in my opinion, but it works. There's a Yes lobby and a No lobby, both accessible from the main House Chamber. Each member enters the lobby of the vote they wish to make, then two members assigned to count votes stand at the exit to each lobby. Those vote counters literally count heads of each member exiting the lobby. Then, after the votes are counted, the four vote counters (two counting Yes, two counting No) get together, record the numbers, and do that cute little bow-step-bow thing right before one reads the vote totals to the house and the Speaker. Then the Speaker re-announces the numbers.
      "Unlock!" = "We've counted all the votes, so let members in and out of the chamber again!"

    I really cannot see the point of indicative votes.
    1. Barnier, Tusk et. al have said that the Withdrawal Treaty is the only deal on offer and is not negotiable. It is either accepted by the UK parliament in it's entirety or else the UK leaves with no deal. This rules out Norway-like deal, Canada+, Canada++, Canada/Norway super duplex retroflex or any other weird combination. It also rules out remaining in the CU and SM.
    2. MPs might indicate that they support revoking A50. HMG will not do this as it would be tantamount to the Conservative Party writing a suicide note. While this might be popular with the people at large, I think I can confidently guess that it is not popular the membership of the Conservative Party at large or Conservative MPS in particular.
    3. A second referendum. HMG will not do this and support in the House is, at best, lukewarm. Referendums are rather unpredictable. 2016 being a case in point.
    4. No deal. Whilst gaining increasing support among the people of the UK (according to opinion polls), MPs are increasingly at odds with their constituents and so this will no show great support in the House.
    5. Long extension. I might ask what for? If I don't, the EU certainly will.
    This would involve the UK taking part in EU elections. The EU is already facing a rise in the EUrosceptic presence in the EU Parliament, they will not wish to see members of UKIP and Nigel Farage's Brexit Party adding to this.
    6. Call a general election. HMG will not do this, T May already tried this once and see point 2 above.
    MPs can indicate all they want, but the EU are firm that it is Theresa Merkel's Withdrawal Treaty or no deal. HMG is firmly against revoking A50, a second referendum or an early GE.
    Indicative votes is, to my mind merely politicking with no other objective than to further the personal careers of the likes of Letwin, Cooper, Benn, Watson et. al.
    It sets a precedent that will degrade Parliament in the long term and demonstrates the complete disdain that MPs have for the mere people of the UK.

    • @ConnorMartinGames
      @ConnorMartinGames 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make some excellent points however, aren't deals such as CU, canada/Norway+ etc only ruled out due to the demands put in place by HMG e.g no free movement etc. If such restrictions were lifted such option would probably become available. Tbh I think it is somewhat arrogant on HMGs part to put such restrictions in place because "people voted to end freedom of movement"etc even though the ballot paper only specified remain or leave. There were a great many options open to the prime minister regarding brexit initially. However she seemingly shot herself in the foot by placing these demands, which would seem to have caused the issues surrounding her current deal.

    Please make a video explaining what the "DIVISION, CLEAR THE LOBBIES" is all about and what happens afterward.

    • @magnus.magnusson
      @magnus.magnusson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the house votes on a motion it starts off with a voice-vote. If there isn't a clear majority for one side or the other the speaker yells "division", announcing that the vote is divided and it cannot be determined who has more votes. "Clear the lobbies" refers to the division lobbies, one for "yes", one for "no", where the MP's gather when they vote. Anyone who isn't an MP cannot vote, and thus must leave the lobbies. The MP's have 8 minutes to get to their respective lobby before they are locked out of the vote.
      The members then walk back into the chamber while tellers mark their names off a list. The results are announced, and the speaker shouts "UNLOCK" to indicate that the voting process is over and the lobbies can be unlocked again.
