Have to disagree, AB inbevs approach to Camden is to move brewing to Wales, Brew at high gravity, switch to Hop extract and most importantly they now pasteurize the beer which was the whole point of the original beer!
I live 600m away from the Höfbrau brewery, great beer but the locals have only 1 choice Augstiner. Höfbrau hardly comes on offer, also it's a government owned brewery, but they still do brewery tours (abeit the shop being closed 😞). Normally the bottle here is 1€ per bottle in a crate of 20.

Somebody finally talking sense! I live in Siegen as a Brit. The beers in Germany are ok, but the saying ‘you don’t know what you’re missing until it’s gone’ comes to mind. Great vid. The quality of the stuff in supermarkets in Germany is so superior. So many breweries local to the city you're in that spank big brand names.
Technically the Camden Hells is a mixture of a Helles and a Pilsner. Really underrated beer. Tends to get looked down on these days because it’s popular. Weirdly, I’ve found that if you drink it out of a 330 bottle you get much flavour from the German hops whereas in the glass it’s a more rounded beer.
Yes I agree, people hate on British lager as it's mainly brewed under license trash so this comes under the hammer too as it's now ABInBev. Must admit though they have nailed it really for the mixture of a Helles and Pils. I love Helles style and you get that for sure and it doesn't come at stupid prices you're paying a bottle shop for German imports.
Strange how regional variations change things so much, Hofbrau is very easy to pick up here in the NW and it's been a good 18 months or so now since you've been able to get Camden Helles for less than it. At the moment the Germans are winning on quality and value. Also we have Booth's supermarkets who stock an incredible selection of beer 😊
Yes Simon! This is the type of content we want. Just to point out though that when you start to take price into account you can almost always buy 2 x 10 multipacks of Lost Lager at Morrisons for £17. That then makes it the equivalent of 96p for 500ml. Totally changes the equation if you are happy to buy in bulk.
Just returned from terrific trip to Munich, the locals were in favour of Augustiner Lagerbier Hell beers. Very tasty, shame they don't seem to be on UK supermarket shelves. Great review & thanks 👍👍
Not sure about that , Augustiner and Spaten Helles don't agree with some folks gut. Mine too... but love other helles and augustiner dunkel is an amazing beer ...
Because they aren´t owned by a corporation and hence have no international distribution. I know, Warsteiner is independent, too. But they're also five times bigger than Augustiner.
@cehaem2 warsteiner is as near a commercial lager as it gets in germany . As for augustiner etc. Things are quite regional in Germany .. it's only recently that it's become widely available in Northern Germany , Berlin etc ... I saw it on sale in a supermarket in north Italy last week , and hb and ofc paulaner.. you can get these gerrman and bayern beers in the specialist beer shops in uk , albeit at 4 times the price they are in Germany and the regions they are made. Bottles of Augustiner helles are a fair bit cheaper in munich than berlin for example.
@@sisi2484 I mentioned Warsteiner in the context of having a distribution network vs being independently owned and operated. If you read my comment again you will notice that i mentioned exactly that in the last sentence. Compared to Warsteiner Augustiner is a dwarf. I remember buying it from a local Getränkermarkt in Bochum in 2006. it started popping up in Berlin cornershops around 2000, just as the gentrification process was about to kick off. iIt gained popularity because it is an independent brewer. Pretty much each and every offie in the UK or Ireland does it now. Even my local offie (and I live in NI) used to sell Spaten and another ABK from Kaufbeuren. Don´t ask me how it got there. One of the Belfast pubs even did Engelbräu on tap some 10 years ago. I haven´t noticed a significant difference in Augustiner pricing between Bavaria and the rest of the country.

Unfiltered Camden Hells from the original brewery in Kentish Town is easily the best British brewed lager. Unfortunately the Camden you find in the supermarket is basically Budweiser
Agree with everything you've said. I'm currently on Brewdog as its cheap in Sainsbury's, 15 cans for £12. But I prefer Camden and when thats on offer I buy that! I think that Hofbrau was in the Lidl Oktoberfest box last year, I am hoping Lidl do that again this year! Boycott the fake eurotrash like Madri and Cruzcampo thats full of Glucose Syrup!
Hofbrau is an incredible lager, and over there it’s almost cheaper than water. Very nice I drank it copiously whilst over there recently. It’s a shame it’s so much more expensive here and only available at Morrisons as I don’t have one near here, I’ll have to make a trip over. Definitely one of my favourite lagers of all time they just get it right
I recently went to a hotel bar and the only 2 lagers on offer were Camden and Amstel. Amstel tastes like cat pee, so I thought I would try Camden. Wow! I've been missing out for years! It's not readily available in many pubs, but when it is, nothing else gets a look in now 🍺
Recently Brewdog had three x ten packs of 440ml Lost larger for £21 in Morrisons. I went back time and again until I had accumalated 12 packs. It has a slight Germanic taste to it, its not bitter and is refreshing with a nice flavour. Its probably not fair to say its the best of a bad bunch but I find it satisfying and price was the deciding factor for me. I don’t think British larger can compete on taste, its just a matter of how low do you want to go or how much can you afford to pay to get reasonble beer?
I'm glad I watched this, I used to live and work in Germany and the Netherlands so I was spoiled by all the super quality beers and I won't touch the UK stuff, but Brewdog may be worth a try? I wouldn't normally touch anything liquid or food made with London tap water, having drunk some from the tap while working there (yikes! no wonder bottled water's so popular there), but you may have persuaded me to try a bottle.
Having recently returned from Munich and spent A LOT of time in the Hofbrauhaus, it's my current favourite beer. I haven't found anything that surpasses it.
Humans being as varied as there are beers, I've never had a Camden Hells I would say was good; be that bottled, canned or on draught. Glad you like it, and all the best to the brewery, it's just not my cup of tea
You had a 3.8% can of carlsberg in a recent video - if you can still get another one, could you compare it to the 3.4% which has now been sneakily stuck on the shelves... cheers! Great content!
Agreed. When I lived in Germany there were so many beers, all delicious. There were (and still are I suppose), 'alt biers' (old beers), which are darker and much more like our light or pale ale which are equally delicious but not really like pils. I particularly looked forward to visiting Dusseldorf and drinking Dussel alt. I'm surprised the German supermarkets don't try it over here but maybe it doesn't travel? I only ever saw it on draft not bottles so who knows?

@@andrewsteer8860 Yes it is. If you buy in multipacks it is less than a third of the price of the Hofbrau featured here. As for taste that is a matter of personal opinion of course.
Appreciate the review and I've yet to try Krombacher myself, but if it's close, surely the fact that the Camden is 660ml vs the Krombacher's 500ml should come into play for your £2.50.

I quite like a Lost now and then. It is a bit lighter and more rounded, but miles better that Carling and other British brewed 'lagers'. But answer me this - why when you criticise the 'earthy' smell of Burton brewed lagers because of the hard water, do you rate Cambden so highly when they must also have hard water? Or do they treat there water somehow?
I've enjoyed your beer reviews since 2010. I recently found out that Greg Puckett of Greg's Beer Reviews passed away. I'm bummed about this, I also started watching Greg's videos in 2010.
Shame morisons only in GB, not the whole of the UK Would be helpful to clarify if the glasses are nucleated regarding carbonation and head retention as it makes a difference.
I was disappointed with Camden but I like bitters and stouts so maybe will give it another go after inspiration from your video. Keep up doing what you do it's great - love the cat chaos and checking the right number of fingers for 8 out of ten mind I would defo be the same.
just learned a lot about which and why lagers I like.. seems I'm mostly a pilsner man am deffo not a new-world lager(?!?) fan as it reminds me of early-teen parties where you try and invent a version of snakebite by mixing leftover cans at the end of the night.. lager and bitter do not mix too well.. Q: How does Camden Town Hells Lager compare/contrast with Paulaner Munich Hell Lager
Had my first pint of Camden Helles in Manchester the other week. Fantastic beer! Have never seen it before,as I live in northern Ireland. The Irish lager is terrible.
You're being Upstaged by the CAT. Great review especially taking the price into account. Although 5.1% ABV does attract a higher Tax Duty in our wonderful country but not 50p a bottle. Great to see a British Brew score so well against the Germans beers. Now back to the CAT. Lol
I do like Camden Hells, certainly can never be accused of being sweet! On the contrary, sometimes I find it a bit salty - probably depends what I've eaten or drunk before pouring and drinking it. I do love the branding and the logo - brilliant logo, it says London with the circle, it says a Brewery tower with the middle bottle like shape and the typeface and name is smart as ... all hell. 😉 Lost Lager - enjoy it too - much sweeter than Hells, for sure. It can be had for quite cheap, but probably overrated in my humble opinion. Never been a big fan of hoppiness of Pils Lager, I also find it far too carbonated for my taste and too bitter - Krombacher is one of those. However, I've had Austrian Pils served in a bar where the publican had a fridge set to an exact temperature and it was bloody lovely. Maybe I need to give Krombacher another try - and concentrate on getting the temperature of the beer spot on. Great video by the way.
Big fan of the Camden Hells, tastes much more like a proper Lager than the BrewDog "Lost Lager", which is too sweet and fruity and not crisp, clean, and dry enough to be a proper lager in the Czech or German style.
Was just in italy one of the big supermarkets did hb 2 euro. Paulaner in another big supermarket same price more or less. Never bothered with either in Germany . Love rothaus pils ..and some of those bavarian dunkel beers are amazing augustinerbräu in particular. Not a fan of their regular helles as it gives me gut ache
I think you previously gave Hofbrau original a 9/10. Surely we can't be dropping a point for £1 extra for an imported beer from Germany Simon? I do like Krombacher and it's fine. But a Hofbrauhaus lager being knocked out for that and god forbid a Camden Hells for the sake of £1 is madness...only IMO mind. We will never drive the price of the great German beers down if we keep paying cheaper money for inferior stuff back here. If you want better pricing for an imported beer then the numbers need to be reflected in sales. Camden Hells is that inferior stuff I spoke of IMO. I've tried it on PD, in pubs, in bottles and wee 330ml cans to see if there was something I was missing. I cant see it. Anyway the cool wee cat agrees with me, as soon as you knocked Hofbrau out in favour of Camden it was making it's feelings very clear.
Those Paulina's are awesome do you do the weiss or dunkels? Honestly is you want cheap good larger instead of the licenced stuff brewed in Northampton the Polish shops do a good range
MOINSEN UT NOORDDÜÜTSCHLAND😁👍 The creation of the “Helles” beer style The light was born in Munich in 1894. The Munich Spaten Brewery was the first brewery to brew a light lager. It is probably an irony of history that the new light beer was not intended for the domestic market, but was first carted to Hamburg for testing - just in case it wasn't a success. After all, the master brewer didn't want to ruin his reputation among the locals. The light beer from Bavaria was well received by the sailors in the far north - luckily! From 1895 onwards, Bayerisch Hell could also be served in Munich. allerbest un hool di wuchtig👍

When we can get krombacher, hofbrau, Spaten, Warsteiner etc in UK supermarkets there is literally no reason to buy anything British made
Not to mention Budvar and Pilsner Urquell.
Price. Lost Lager is 95% as good as those beers in my opinion and if you are happy to buy multipacks when on offer it can be less than a third of the price of the hofbrau.
@@davidk7262 it’s not that much cheaper and no where near 95% as good though is it
Bang on. If more consumers had their “red pill” moment we would have a much better beer scene!
@@andrewsteer8860 Yes it is. If you buy in multipacks it is less than a third of the price of the Hofbrau featured here. As for taste that is a matter of personal opinion of course.
You can also get Krombacher for 50c a bottle, here.
Camden hells is a boss beer your cat was the star of the vlog
Never seen Hoffbrau in any of the 3 Morrisons local to me ! 😢
Appreciate the review and I've yet to try Krombacher myself, but if it's close, surely the fact that the Camden is 660ml vs the Krombacher's 500ml should come into play for your £2.50.
Krombacher is 660ml at Tesco, well it was when I got it last week.
That is a very good point.
its not a si beer vid with out the bottle top dropping on the floor. top beer review as always.
24.30.... I laughed my head off! Wonderful video
You need to look at bottle size too in terms of value for money with the price. Camden seems a bigger bottle than Krombacker for the same money?
12:36 not keen at all on zesty citrus type light colour beers Orkney Brewery do a few and I’m not keen on any of them. Glad the range is good with stouts and IPA’s. Have you tried any Orkney Brewery or Swanny beers from up there.?
there is no comparison to German Beers
I love German beers but Belgium has the best stuff. Those Monks know how to get pissed in style.
@@Wimplemannah well overated . Im English but live in Bavaria half the year. Some of the lagers and pilsners are incredible. Around Franconia also highest density of breweries in the world ,1100 ,some great ones
@@147breaks Sounds like you have had plenty of practice arriving at your position, fair play. Had some incredible Weissbiers and Dunkels in Germany, so have no issues with your preference.
@@Wimpleman I've been living between both countries for 8 yrs , developing a beer belly because of the gorgeous German beers lol
Camden more than likely soften their water before they brew.
Cat scared the shit out of me
I've enjoyed your beer reviews since 2010. I recently found out that Greg Puckett of Greg's Beer Reviews passed away. I'm bummed about this, I also started watching Greg's videos in 2010.
Kronbacher has dropped an ABV. It was 4.9 percent. Maybe that's why they don't highlite ABV on the label.
Really like krombacher but my favourite when I lived in Germany was warstiener
Wish Hacker Pschorr was available easily in the UK as that was my favourite in Munich both times I’ve been. Augustiner a close 2nd
Hi Hofbrau 500ml 1,75 sterling(24.40kr) in Sweden ..strong pound atm in Sweden,
Atb
Now we can brew good lager in UK Hells will have their lager made by Carlsberg in nothampton, increase the price and reduce the aBV
Shame morisons only in GB, not the whole of the UK
Would be helpful to clarify if the glasses are nucleated regarding carbonation and head retention as it makes a difference.
I was disappointed with Camden but I like bitters and stouts so maybe will give it another go after inspiration from your video. Keep up doing what you do it's great - love the cat chaos and checking the right number of fingers for 8 out of ten mind I would defo be the same.
just learned a lot about which and why lagers I like.. seems I'm mostly a pilsner man
am deffo not a new-world lager(?!?) fan as it reminds me of early-teen parties where you try and invent a version of snakebite by mixing leftover cans at the end of the night.. lager and bitter do not mix too well..
Q: How does Camden Town Hells Lager compare/contrast with Paulaner Munich Hell Lager
Will buy those top two next time I am in tesco.
Had my first pint of Camden Helles in Manchester the other week. Fantastic beer! Have never seen it before,as I live in northern Ireland. The Irish lager is terrible.
This the guy that said fosters was amazing?
There were 10 German Beers on the wall, 🎶
And the British Brews from Britain shat their pants🎶
🤣
Never got way with Camden Hells, best british one is Thornbridge Lukas by a mile.
You're being Upstaged by the CAT. Great review especially taking the price into account. Although 5.1% ABV does attract a higher Tax Duty in our wonderful country but not 50p a bottle. Great to see a British Brew score so well against the Germans beers. Now back to the CAT. Lol
7:50 … who’s knocking ? I 😂😂😂
@@jasonsmith7737 It's that headboard again!
I do like Camden Hells, certainly can never be accused of being sweet!
On the contrary, sometimes I find it a bit salty - probably depends what I've eaten or drunk before pouring and drinking it.
I do love the branding and the logo - brilliant logo, it says London with the circle, it says a Brewery tower with the middle bottle like shape and the typeface and name is smart as ... all hell. 😉
Lost Lager - enjoy it too - much sweeter than Hells, for sure.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 24:33 absolutely pissed myself 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The cat was the star of the show ! 👌😂
I know a bit of topic. I love Samuel Adams but can't get it anywhere. Is there anything out there similar
The cat stole the show ! 🤣
Big fan of the Camden Hells, tastes much more like a proper Lager than the BrewDog "Lost Lager", which is too sweet and fruity and not crisp, clean, and dry enough to be a proper lager in the Czech or German style.
Brewdog lost lager did win worlds best international lager award
I like lost, but its their cheap go at breaking into the cheap lager market. I find it watery also, the others on this show are far superior beers.
Camden Hells is great, not even "for a UK lager". Krombacher is different and lovely too 👍
Was just in italy one of the big supermarkets did hb 2 euro. Paulaner in another big supermarket same price more or less. Never bothered with either in Germany . Love rothaus pils ..and some of those bavarian dunkel beers are amazing augustinerbräu in particular. Not a fan of their regular helles as it gives me gut ache
Hofbrau is actually pronounced 'Hoff Broi' similar to 'Lowenbrau' which is 'Leerven Broi' (Lions Brew)
Tescos has gone down hill after no longer carrying Sam Adams Boston Lager, a most underated Beer.
Loved Sam Adam’s , sadly missed
They've got Paulaner Münchner Hell though
That Camden Hells had nine lives...
The Camden hells is excellent the Brewdog in cans and bottles are hit and miss alot of the time but on tap really good
Nearly every day I am drinking Krombacher particularly as currently here there is an offer buy 4 cans and get a branded cool bag
German larger beers are very good but they do not have the variety of all the other beer types we have in the UK.
Sounded like somebody's headboard knocking in the background there!
Camden Hells I like. My issue is - owned by a mega company. How long will it be before they start cutting back on the ingredients?
@@sr6424 they’ve been owned by InBev for 9 years, if that was going to happen it would have already happened
Came for the beer review, stayed for the cat 😂😂😂😂
Those Paulina's are awesome do you do the weiss or dunkels? Honestly is you want cheap good larger instead of the licenced stuff brewed in Northampton the Polish shops do a good range
MOINSEN UT NOORDDÜÜTSCHLAND😁👍
The creation of the “Helles” beer style The light was born in Munich in 1894.
That is fantastic information, thank you
