As an automotive engineer, yep that's pretty much always is the case these days. Same case with hot hatches or any "suped up" variants. For example, Focus ST and RS variants were planned in from the start of the platform design. What may happen is killing the variant mid development, but creating a performance variant from scratch on an existing platform in such a short period of time is rarely, if ever, seen these days.

gm has new inline 6 , gm has new inline 6, how about a transverse inline 6 powering electric motors? or just half a v12 mechnaical connection to wheels? i6 is more effceint and les weight (easier to control drifts, cheaper) and sounds better than v8, although the weight would be less in center of car, that maybe not a problem. by effiency, i mena more power and less weight to push. in automatic transmission mode, the electric idea would be the smoothest correlation between driver input, power and sound, with no transmission shifts or whatever number of manual or automatic transmission shifts driver wants... if hes lazy at the moment , he will nto be willing to put the effort to have more fun, if hes not he will put the effort. he can spin the engine for the sound at low speed, and not loose some the energy because battery (althought its possible to have no battery, battery is heavy and doesnt last long the more energy there is going into and out of car).. given lotus emira is v6, maybe weight will be similar to emira too? give us that hydrallic steering so peopel can feel how close to grip limit car is... how much can you feel grip limit of rear wheels etc through seats?

But this is exactly what I’ve been wanting, hybrids, electric components aiding the superior ICE engines. And this just knocks it out of the park. • @wbass243

sorry, but from an engineering standpoint, an electric motor is "better" than an ice engine. It has more power to weight, Is more effecient, and requires less maintenance. The issues arises from batteries. They don't hold as much energy density as petrol fuel. So in order to put down the kind of power an rc car does, you'd need a huge bank of batteries (weight) or have a tiny run time (fast discharge)...So weight negates the efficiency savings that an electric motor gives you. Just thought id chime in.

YES, it's an amazing idea. I think it makes the most sense, as people have said in the comments. The main point I realized is that you don't need a new charging infrastructure, and you don't even have to pay for a charger in your garage, you could just use 120 volt extension cord, on a regular receptacle, and the gasoline engine could do the rest of the charging (that's the beauty of a hybrid). Something I want to point out, I LOVE the new Corvettes, but there is nothing better than the sound of the original NON flat-plane crankshaft 6.2L Chevy engine with push rods, and an underhead camshaft with a 2 valve cylinder head. Have you heard a 2006 Chevy Z06? OMG. For the sound alone, I wish they offered one of the original LS1 engines (or whatever the last code was that they used for the push rod engine).

    • @Avetho

The electric motor driven by supercapacitors charged by the motor which drives either a generator or the wheels depending on driving demands seems to be the best, but the E-Ray is just about its equal, the motor picks up the slack for the engine under acceleration and recovers energy from braking for the next takeoff, the engine cruises efficiently at highway speed for nearly a thousand miles, and if it used supercapacitors instead then it would be safer than a Tesla which is prone to exploding because of how unstable NCA chemistry is.

They were planning on moving the RL (which became the RLX) to a V8 powered, RWD platform to compete with the Lexus LS, and the plans were that the next generation NSX would get the same V8 (improved of course). But once 2008 hit, they had to cancel plans for that engine and platform, and that’s how they ended up with the “sport-hybrid”, and while innovative, the technology was still too new for it to be impressive to the normal person, which is why the RLX and NSX were a let down for most people.
