"Failurepoints" where a popular topic in the early days of "DIR-Diving". They were everywhere :) Now lets discuss some examples and see what this is all about.

Thank you ISE. Your videos are always a great help and source of information! I've taken the liberty of removing the static noise from the audio. I've sent you a link on your email with the mp3 file, in case you want to replace the audio of the video with the one I've sent you. Happy new year!

    Hi Achim,
Really enjoy watching your videos very informative. I was wondering if you could do a video on propulsion including fins and scooters please.
I notice you use the Hollis fins quite a lot in your videos and I saw a pair of Scubapro jet fins in the mine video you published on TH-cam.
What do you think to the other tech fins on the market for example OMS Slipstreams, XS Turtles, Apeks RK3 HD, XDEEP EX1, Tecline powerjets etc. How does the biomechanics of the diver effect his propulsion; for example, would a diver with longer legs want a heavier fin?
    Thanks.
    Cheers
    James

I think sometimes people focus too much on "potential" failure points, where they focus on first stage orientation because the diaphragm may be exposed, or a long hose because the longer the hose the bigger snag hazard it becomes.
It's good to be aware of potential failure points, but adding an extra o-ring so you can have an elbow and route a hose better, may be less of a failure point than not having the elbow, and have a hose that makes a loop.
You need to look at the overall picture. What do you gain, and what do you risk. If you have two first stages, the chances that a first stage fails doubles, but the chances that all your first stages fail is drastically reduced. If the chance that a first stage fails is 1%, if you have two first stages, the chance that one fails is 2%. The chances that both fail is 0.01%. (Yes, I know this is not completely true and the chances can increase dramatically depending on a variety of factors, but for the sake of theory this works as an example.)

Hi Axel, great video as usual but no harm to bear in mind ‘probability’ when discussing failure points. Identifying a hazard (failure point) without measuring the probability of it occurring is meaningless i.e. a hose rupturing is a hazard but if the probability of it occurring is 1 in every 10,000 dives then that is an acceptable risk, whereas if the probability was 1 in 10 then that risk is an extreme one.

About a regulators holy war, Apeks adepts can use a Apeks DST + 5th port kit to get a correct hose routing.

Great video as usual. What style mask do you use?

The mask in the video is the ScubaPro Ghost. But any frameless mask will work (e.g. Hollis M1).

What are your thoughts on air integration? Benefit over spg? Use with an spg? Redundancy vs increased failure points?

Would hose protectors solve the rupture problem?
