Manufacturers of such batteries need to be investigated because it is extremely hard to imagine that they were not aware of these toxic dangers!

    • @etaxalo
      @etaxalo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

im pretty sure they are aware but it comes down to
      A) if the battery dont receive shocks/damages it can be considered "normal operation" (discharge-recharge)
      B) to swap out the specified chemical that releases said gases upon heating up could cost millions and the new chemical might not be so efficient as current. so until the new battery chemical is tested developed again for possible errors/efficiency in smaller form like tablet/phone batteries they will be hard pressed to re tool their entire lineup for EV batteries
      C) lots of chemicals can be considered "safe" as in it wont explode/release certain gases on their own, and in certain conditions they can react and combine with others to make dangerous chemicals (there are videos here on youtube explaining how you can make chemical weapons from 1-2$ home cleaning solutions)

@@mercdragonsNo, that's completely wrong lithium iron phosphate and lithium titanate do not suffer from thermal runaway.
That is they will not burn vigorously if at all.

Sodium ion also are very hard to get burning.

I used to work for a lithium company in the US. We produced lithium metal and lithium chemical compounds. If a material become problematic we took it to an open place and let it "weather". Sooner or later it would decompose or detonate. In many cases we never new when or how long these reactions took, but we had the time and distance to let it cook off without injuring anyone. We also had a water reaction system that quenched materials and we recycled the lithium containing solutions. I witnessed a very health detonation there one time and was knock off my feet by the shock wave. Twice during my years there we stopped making products that were uniquely dangerous. One detonated if crushed, the other was hyper toxic. The process for the hyper toxic material was sold to an overseas company and product goes into batteries. Knowing what I know about lithium I drive a petroleum fueled vehicle and invest in oil companies.

    • @ghz24
      @ghz24 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@HiwasseeRiver Really? What specific chemical used in lithium ion batteries was so toxic it was outsourced to foreign countries?
You mentioned no specific chemicals except lithium metal which is not present in lithium ion batteries.
You don't sound like a chemist was it your job to take dangerous stuff outside?
Chemical companies are dangerous without any lithium needed even raney nickel processes can go badly.

It overheated on its own & exploded @ 4:52AM. Everyone escaped unharmed except for me. Was treated for physical injuries & was treated @ the hospital for smoke inhalation. My brother’s room was completely destroyed even though the fire department arrived within minutes. They had to use chemical foam to extinguish the fire. All of the sudden, as I was watching TV, I heard a hissing and looked down and one of the batteries just spontaneously started to combust. As a tow truck operator who has had to deal with this.
I can tell you the main reasons this happens are as follows.
    #1, Defective bateries.
#2, Rapidly discharging the batteries below ten percent.
So if you go from one hundred percent charge all the way down to ten percent in a very short span of time and you keep going hard on the battery beyond ten percent.
    You get thermal run away.
In an electric vehicle , if you're down to ten percent and you're not too far from home and you're still on the highway.
    What do you do?
Most people don't even think about it.
Most people don't know the dangers of driving below 10% battery charge. After you've been running it hard the whole way.
A lack of education and proper safety equipment to shut down the car and prevent it from running below ten percent battery charge after it's been running hard.
    Would greatly mitigate the problem.
Then rapidly charging the battery after it's been fully discharged or nearly fully discharged immediately after heavy use.
Fast chargers are great for convenience.
But they are bad for battery stability.
    Leading to more explosions.
It also does not help that battery packs are massively oversized.
Leading to battery cells being packed very closely together.
Preventing proper cooling of the cells.
Most people don't need more than 50 to 100 miles of range.
Leading people to have to buy a massave 500, 600 or 700 mile range battery.
Then they forget to charge it.
    Until it's very low.
So you have them driving around with a low charge. State batthree and then they run it below ten percent while they're running hard.
Then they immediately charge it once they get home on a fast charging station , leading to the ideal conditions for a battery explosion...

I have another son who works in the funeral industry, and has dealt with the lethal results of these fires first hand. Sadly, the car accident in question was little more than a "fender bender," otherwise perfectly survivable. Unfortunately, the driver of the electric car was unable to exit the car before it bursts into flames and he ultimately perished. I'm actually having second thoughts now about buying an electric car. Imagine if it blew up in your garage in the middle of the night. If your family survived, you might still lose everything else due to the fire!

We have that in Norway already. No need to imagine. Like 20%~40% of the cars at the nearby shopping mall parking garage are EVs.
An airport parking garage went up in flames here recently. Started by an ICE car, of course, as is common. The garage had several EVs in them.
Do you want to guess how many EV battery packs ignited? Zero. Not a single one started burning despite the hell-fire around them fuelled by gallons and gallons of extremely flammable gasoline.
So you want to imagine a parking garage full of EVs? Maybe one of them catches fire for some reason. A freak accident. But it can happen. What next? Nothing.. the fire would most likely not spread at all. Maybe the interior of the cars next to it would start burning. But that’d be small fires that wouldn’t spread very fast.
So the fire department would have plenty of time to get to and deal with that one EV fire. They would have to douse it in water for a long time, but that’s manageable. On the other hand, if gasoline starts to burn in a parking garage the entire place will quickly become a lost cause.
There’s a reason Hollywood uses gasoline for the explosion effects: it’s a perfect recipe for huge fireball.

      1 Combustible material.

Now with lithium batteries they can self ignite they produce their own oxygen burn more ferociously and at a vastly higher temperature than petrol also it can reignite itself some time after the original fire.

Been driving Uber here in Southern California, using rental cars. Several other people showed up yesterday at a Hertz dealership to rent cars. Everybody else wanted a Tesla. People want to be cool and do whatever's the coolest thing. A while back I drove a Prius for a week and put it through the paces, driving in each of three modes. I wasn't impressed. Rode in a Tesla the other day, the outside door handles are made for right-handed people. I notice stuff like this because I'm a lefty. You have to press the left side of the handle with your thumb, then grab the right side that pops out with your fingers. If you want to use your left hand, you have to press the left side of the handle with your pinky and ring finger, then grab the handle with your middle and index fingers. Think about it. When you get in and out of a car, the hand you'll use depends upon which side of the car you're getting into. Even the right-hander will use their left hand on the outside handle of a door on the left side. If they use their right hand, the door is right in the way of their body, trying to get into the car. If it's a Tesla, they have to do the two-step every time they get into the car, or open it with their left hand. That's very difficult for right-handed people, who seldom have to accommodate the left-handers world. It's plumb stupid, besides the awful fact of the huge electric battery.

Few firefighters are aware as yet of the danger - they go in close with water hoses making the fire worse and are taken by surprise when the cloud explodes. The vapour cloud is far more dangerous than the fire in terms of risk to life and potential damage from explosion. I used to work in an explosive factory and became familiar with the levels of danger in a variety of explosive mixes.

As you are likely aware the many EVs that had batteries breached by corrosive salt water during Hurricane Ian in Florida. Same issue, that when the vehicles were towed for repair/salvage they often reignited several hours later and the fire would leap & extend to other vehicles parked close by. They learned quickly to build a buffer zone of void space to prevent further extension. This caused a bit of a problem because it took up many more parking spaces. A lot designed to hold 200 vehicles could only place about 25% of that total if they were EV fire risk.

The usual fuels used in ICEs are quit stable, and they require oxygen to burn.
They are stored energy, but its energy held chemically, released only at high temperatures and when mixed with air.
EVs have their energy stored electrically, it's a electrical charge, like a loaded spring. There is nothing required for it to release its energy. Once you critically damage the battery you can't stop the process. You could put the battery into a vaccum, cover it with water, throw it into a pool of liquid nitrogen, nothing stops the release of its energy, all while it creates toxic fumes.

I just happened to visit a rechargeable Lithium battery manufacturer in PRC some years ago, too. I was told the liquid inside is actually kerosene. During manufacturing, water vapour is strictly forbidden, otherwise the active Li compound will degrade very soon and the cell will bloat or burst. The result will be disastrous.

My friend does fire damage repairs for insurance companies.
He said that insurance companies distort statistics.
Some battery fires are recorded as electrical fires.
Especially if they take place in the garage in the apartment.
So there are actually much more battery fires than is known.

I asked our local ferry boat crew on how they deal with this and if they had a plan in place. They told me that they did have a plan and that it basically was a blanket. I told them that passengers should be informed of emergency procedures and that there were a lot of gas cars parked beside electric cars in a confined space. Our ferries hold around 300 cars for a two hour trip. Not exactly comforting to think that something like this could go up in flames with poisonous gas in seconds anytime.

Just like all other laws, it will first take a catastrophe before a law is made to ban EV's. It's coming, perhaps in a week or perhaps in 20 years, but it will happen and I hope you and I are not directly injured by it.

The blankets seem to work to stop the blaze. But as soon as they are removed, it rekindles. Temporary stopgap measure. They should always place them in a spot where they can be pushed overboard for safety. This is what the Navy does with burning aircraft.

@@cvn6555 How you gonna push it overboard when is ignites and it is an inferno in 10 sec. I saw an EV fire on highway from a kilometer away... that is the biggest blaze i have ever seen. Did not know at first it was an EV burning, but i kinda guesed it could be since i have seen regular fires on highway, this was on another level

@@lukasalej5710 Have them positioned in places near openings or automated openings. Throw the fire blankets on them then use a bulldozer to push them out. We didn't push intensely blazing aircraft over the side; it was after the flames had died down that the dozer would shove them off. Fire crew right there, hoses charged to protect the dozer operator. They said it was all the magnesium that caused such problems that they couldn't get them put out and stay out. Those blankets work extremely well to attenuate but not extinguish the EV fires.
