13:10 It's not just cooked cabbage. It's made with pickled cabbage and boiled in the oven for a long, long time, which is why you don't actually feel the cabbaginess of it, if that makes any sense. Pickled cabbage is sour and a bit salty but after boiling it with pork, it tastes nothing like cabbage, you just taste the meat, mostly. Very traditional and very yummy. I love them too. Dish has turkish origins, but it morphed to the local's taste.

First of all even the romanian cabage îs much better then any others cabage în Europe. Second, don't forget that turkish food îs most of it originale thracian because even today the turkish are genetically 80% thracians. So who was first the egg or the hen?!

Thank you for the nice and kind comments about Romania and Romanian culture. As an anecdote Romanians wine culture goes back at least for 2000 years back before the Romans came and invaded Dacia (old Romania) and during those times is documented that Burebista, one of the biggest Dacian kings ordered all the vineyards to be destroyed so the soldiers would stop drinking wine and get ready for war instead....oh yeah, and another thing the Greek/Roman Wine God Dionysus or Bacchus for Romans came from that region. Glad you enjoyed Romanian cabbage rolls , my fav ones are made with sour cabbage in a bit of a sauerkraut juice, but either way each region in that country has a different version of it :) - thanks again for the beautiful show.

The quiet and rustic place that you went to eat at is called Hanul lui Manuc (Manuc's Inn). It's one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) restaurant/hotel in Bucharest, over 2 centuries old. My husband and I had our wedding reception there, almost 20 years ago, and also spent our first wedding night in one of the rooms. I've been in love with the place ever since I was a little kid! It will be called ciorba de burta . In English is tripe soup it is similar to Mexican soup menudo just that the Romanian one is made with sour cream , vinegar and garlic therefor the color of the soup is white while the Mexican menudo soup is more spicy and red soup also just as good.

    • @MrsBlackBeauty

For me "ciorba de burtă" is amazing! 🤩 But, keep in mind that not even all Romanians like it and for foreigners maybe it's more of an acquired taste.

I don't think it makes sense to prioritize the national culinary sciences. Not everyone has the same tastes and each region has its own specific food. That doesn't stop anyone from tasting the traditional dishes of a country. We, Romanians, when we travel to other countries like to taste the dishes specific to that region. We are used to simple foods, we do not want to taste art but food.

HI! Great video, everything you had looks amazing like its supposed to. But I feel like this needs a bit of an explanation. Papanasi is nothing like doughnuts, except both being round. The papanasi dough is made with sweet cows cheese and that's what makes them so good. Also the "soured cream" its served with is actually double cream. Cant wait to have some myself. Keep it up and enjoy Europe with all its diversity!

@@DelightfulTravellers Great video yes. Like. What Gabriel says (Bura is his last name) is that what you ate is not the traditional papanaş ... It is the one made in restaurants for tourists. You can find the traditional one only prepared at home by romanians and it is ... much tastier. In restaurants papanaș is a donut (it's simpler and cheaper to make) ... the traditional one is made from cow's cheese. I don't know if exist a restaurant in Romania that prepares it according to the traditional recipe. It's like Dracula for tourists and Vlad Țepeș for romanians ... it's about the same subject, but with two interpretations: one to impress tourists with a false image given by Bram Stoker (he was never in Romania ... and he didn't taste papanași), and a better real one only for the soul of the romanians.

Growing up my dads cabbage roll recipe was very sour. No sauce. My mom told me she has to sour the cabbage in advance. I wonder if that makes it softer too. I didn’t love to eat the cabbage but now I enjoy it. My mom is canadian and she has done a beautiful job at learning Romanian and Serbian cuisine. When I went Romania the first time by myself, I was 17 and stayed almost all summer. I didn’t know how to cook back then and relied on my sister in laws cooking. She served soup every day. Even at breakfast. Oh my laaaaaand. I was so sick of soup. 😂 I didn’t understand how they’d make soup in the summer like that. They really use their leftovers though. I appreciate how they don’t waste things like we do here. Now I wish I could have those soups more frequently. I was a stubborn typical teenager though.

I would have recommand white wine with the cheese. And I think the best Romanian white wine is ... (drums)... Muscat Ottonel (sweet and flavourful), or Feteasca Regala (a little dryer). Enjoy it, tomorrow maybe! As a red wine, my favourite is Busuioaca de Bohotin. Enjoy your stay in Romania, I would like to meet you guys, but I don't live in Bucharest. I am happy travelling with you, through your videos.

Liked and subscribed . I'm romanian, living in another city, 250 km from Bucharest, Galatz where the life is a bit cheaper .
I'd say that kind of bruschetta, Cream of Pork Spread 04:26 is way, way to overpriced, not worth it so much, i would give it maximum 12 Lei . Don't forget to come back to Romania if you liked and this time come to mountains area and try homemade food if you find some kind of tour or a trusted person. I'm glad you enjoyed Cabage Rolls called Sarmale or Sarmalute, that's my favourite and i eat that every week or so because this is our traditional food in the whole country not in just one region. Tho the recipe may differ a bit in different regions. You should've try grinded mixed meat on grill called Mici with bread and mustard. I like Ciorba very much with chili . Other traditional food : Rasol de Gaina cu Usturoi, Fasole cu Ciolan, Fasole cu Carnati, Ciorba de Burta (this goes in category of weird food recipe), Tochitura de Porc, Ciorba de Peste, Supa de Vita, Racitura also called Piftie , Creier Pane, Chiftele (Meatballs), and many more, some of them has just different names for different regions.

When I was in Romania as a teenager I went to my sister in-laws
aunts house to buy some cheese from her. I felt so bad because I walked in and gagged.. I just can’t handle the strong smell of cheeses. I had to leave. That wasn’t the first time that happened to me. Did the same thing at a family friends feta cheese plant. 😅🙈 my poor dad doesn’t understand how I’m his child who doesn’t love strong cheeses. - the last time I visited Romanian, I just told people I don’t like salty cheese. That wasn’t a good enough excuse. They still kept serving me it 😂 but I love love love the sour soups and foods.

Awesome comment! Romanian here 😄 I am city girl, but my childhood vacations were spent in the countryside, at my grandparents house and they had many sheep and would make cheese, so everytime I came to stay with them, for about 3 months a year, it would take some getting used to... but after a while, it would not bother me 😄 Even now, when we go on vacation to the mountains and eat at local restaurants, the sheep smell is sometimes pretty pungent and my 8 year old thinks it's gross, but I don't mind it, because it reminds me of my grandparents and chidlhood.
      Greetings from Romania 🇷🇴 ❤

The dough in Papanasi is made with cottage cheese, that's where the creamy consistency and softly caramelized aroma come from. Traditional Romanian food basic flavours are similar to the Mediterranean cuisine, i.e. herbs, garlic, onion, chilis, salt & pepper, and in some areas also paprika; cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, star anise and allspice are sometimes found in homemade sweets/desserts (and, of course, mulled wine). The thing is our vegetables, herbs and fruit are so flavoursome that you'd totally ruin the symphony of natural scents and aromas by adding strong spices like curries, ginger or turmeric.

Appreciate your comment about filming in loud places. Must be hard for you to locate places that work. Also, you do a great job of filming while not being distracted by other diners/wait staff.
I wonder if the cream on the donuts might be creme fraiche? Our family in Slovenia uses it for both savory and sweet dishes. Not as sour as our North American sour cream.

    • @DukeOfTheYard
      @DukeOfTheYard 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Terese Kinast: Yes, it's creme fraiche. Or just creme, if you wish. :-)
We don't put anything in it to make it sour. In Romania we use it both for deserts and for main dishes.
Papanasii (the "doughnuts" shown here) are actually made from a mixture of flower, sugar and cottage cheese, deep fried. The sour cream is put on top of it to make everything creamier and prevent the doughnuts to get dry. And the jam is supposed to be something not excesively sweet; the most common is sour cherries or wild berries.
