The Worst Choke Job In NBA History | 1994 Game Seven Knicks vs Rockets

  • In 1994, the New York Knicks were on the cusp of beating the Houston Rockets to win it all thanks to the 4th quarter efficiency of John Starks. Unfortunately, after Olajuwon blocked his series winning 3-pointer at the end of Game 6, he was drained of all ability and put up the most disastrous Game 7 all around performance in NBA history. I said it, so it’s true.

I wouldn't even go as far as losing game seven. There is no game seven without Starks. When your guy has an off night, and it happens to everyone.. Good team mates will carry you through. Starks had the record of most missed threes in a playoff. Until a certain sharp shooter named Steph Curry 5-23 in game 2 of the 2015 NBA finals. Spoiler warning: warriors still won. It is just easier for our little brains to blame one person.

    Ewing choked all series long.
Can’t put the blame on anyone but him. Ewing had a shooting % of 36. Think about how bad that is for a center.
Starks was only outscored by Ewing by 8 points for the series and Ewing took 54 more shots than Starks.
Then think about how Olajuwon scored 27ppg on 50% shooting. That’s complete domination of Ewing.

Problem was they did NOT have "other weapons" besides Ewing who was obviously being double teamed...
I didnt mind Riley going to Starks , but MAYBE someone should have told Starks he could try to drive to the basket if his outside game wasnt there that night ( and he WAS an inconsistent shooter at best)

I vowed that the Knicks would never lose again. Like a crazy person I thought they could be saved by me. I practiced every day. I grew exactly one inch and never made a team. I am the Knicks. Failures forever. This one right here....hurts. 😔

Honorable mention to: Nick Anderson in the 95 Finals with his 4 consecutive missed free throws when all Orlando needed was 1 and JR Smith in the 2018 Finals with his running out the last 5 seconds after an offensive rebound in a tie game. Also the Houston Rockets in the 2018 Western Conference Finals for missing 27 consecutive 3-pointers in game 7, blowing a 3-2 lead over the favored Warriors.

Throwing a viewer suggestion out there.
April 16, the year of our lord nineteen hundred and two to the fifth power times three. Cleveland, Ohio.
The Cavaliers beat the Hawks 80-77...in a game that was played at a 71.4 pace. It was not good defense as the low score implies (allowing 80 points in 71.4 possessions is a 112 Defensive Rating.) It was just slow, boring, Fratello-ball at its absolute nadir. A game that is nothing but 24-second violations would be a pace of 60.
It is the worst NBA game in the shot-clock era.

New York fans who are looking for a scapegoat will always refer to this one game, but they forget Charles Smith's disastrous attempts under the rim against the Bulls, or Ewing's missed lay up against the Pacers. Or how about in 97, when the Knicks were up 3-1 against the Heat in the semi finals and still lost? Starks played abysmal in that game, no doubt, but to always hear fans blame him for their only shot at winning a title simply isn't accurate.

I just read every single one of the 650+ comments on this, hoping someone would mention an NBA Finals Game 7 shooting performance that was actually even worse than John Starks' bricklaying in this game.
1978. Dennis Johnson doesn't just go 0-for-the-4th-quarter. Oh, no. He goes 0-FOR-THE-ENTIRE-GAME.
He shoots 0-for-14 that night as Seattle loses by six points (the 1994 game was also decided by six points).
DC fans should thank DJ for doing much of the work to help Washington win its only NBA championship.
There are two reasons this is almost entirely forgotten about today:
    1) the NBA was nowhere near as popular in 1978 as it would start to become in the mid-'80s, and
    2) Dennis Johnson would recover to win the Finals MVP award the very next year, before what he did in '78 had much of a chance to settle into memory.
