Super helpful for disassembly. My whirlpool had wires attached to back panel at top on each side. I just flipped it up from bottom to freezer ceiling and propped it up at sides with cardboard "stilts" so I could work underneath clearing ice.
    Worked great.
    Thanks for this.

Thanks so much for sharing ~ two 60 something ladies watched your video and took care of the problem ourselves. We live on an island and we get charged a surcharge in addition to the fix….so we saved a lot of money!

Thanks for sharing, had mine fixed in less than 2 hours! I clean up the grommet with soap and viniger, then made 2 small slits on each side about 3/16 of an inch to help let out a bit more.
Of course having 2 golden retrievers there was a bit of dog hair build up. All clean now!

      Great suggestion, it’s
always nice to hear how other people in the industry address different repairs.
You input is greatly appreciated and I will add font in to the video as a
secondary way to accomplish the same goal.

Thank You!! 3 tips that I'm sure Mr. Matt says/does that I didn't catch: 1) loosen the 4 door screws, don't remove, the door slides off. 2) loosen the top 2 screws (don't remove) for the ice maker, remove the bottom one, it slides up and off - way easier to put back that way. 3) enjoy your freezer yoga routine - I didn't fit in there as easy as our tutor, but I sure got some crunches in there, and my dog liked me being on the floor! Thanks again for this video!!!

Thank you for this video, and for the revised follow-up video featuring the new p-trap design. I have the Maytag version of this fridge and I have been experiencing this identical issue for weeks. I have ordered the replacement part and hope to fix it ASAP.
Just a comment on Whirlpool customer service - they will not help in any way. They do not recognize this as a fault with their design, even though the new models feature the p-trap instead of the grommet. Since I am 12 months out of warranty they said I have to pay for a certified tech to come out to the house to diagnose the issue and then complete the repair (diagnostic charge plus parts and labor). Afterwards, they would review it and decide if they could goodwill the part only. No thanks!
I told them I recently bought new faucet fixtures in my house and all the faucet companies provide replacement parts and repair parts absolutely free of charge, for any issues whatsoever, FOR LIFE. That is on a sink faucet. In contrast, after spending well over a thousand dollars on a kitchen appliance, I am being told they will not even offer me a $20 part to fix a known problem, which they later redesigned. The Whirlpool CSR said she can't just go around sending out free parts to people. Talk about awful post sales service...

***** Call 1-866-698-2538 and ask for a supervisor. Let them know you have been a loyal customer of Whirlpool and are asking for a parts concession for this issue. In most cases a supervisor will override and give the concession. Let us know how it turns out.

***** Thank you very much for the recommendation to call back. When I called, they pulled up the information from my previous call and I didn't even need to speak with the supervisor. Just making the request itself was sufficient to escalate the request to the appropriate level. The new part is being sent out free of charge, and I was told that if this doesn't resolve the issue or if the part is installed incorrectly, Whirlpool will not provide me with any further assistance. At least they are sending me the part. That's all that matters at this point. I'm looking forward to fixing the problem!

Was able to fix the ice at the bottom of my freezer, leaking, intermittent temp issues, and water dispenser line freezing based on the instructions in this video. I did not replace with another cheap grummet, however. I purchased a p-trap, and used that instead of the cheap drain and grummet. Also, I used a hairdryer to melt all the ice built up on the coils/pipes. Fridge has been running like a champ for 3 weeks now since I made those repairs! Thanks!

Can't thank you enough for this video! I have the Maytag version of this refrigerator and was experiencing a sheet of ice on the bottom of the freezer every two weeks. I'd normally just throw a sheet pan at the base of the fridge, break up the ice and slide it out and onto the sheet pan. Two days ago, the top fridge wasn't warming properly and I had the feeling that the ice buildup had gone so far out of control that it had blocked the vent going up from the freezer. I defrosted the whole fridge by unplugging and leaving the doors open for 12 hours, and doing everything that was shown in this vid. In total, only took about an hour and the fridge is back to cooling the top unit. We'll see if this fixes the problem...

Then took back off and installed the p trap tube and sure enough the factory grommet was indeed just as the video shows. Dude, thanks a bunch for taking time to post this. It made the job 10 times easier being able to "follow the dots" instead of going in blind. Mine is a Maytag, can you tell me if they are aware of the "tight" grommet issue, and if so, are they making a grommet that drains a little easier? If not, I may need to do what the guy below did and make a couple of little slits in the bottom of the grommet to allow it to drain a little easier.
    Once again, much appreciated.

Did as you said, re the grommet, It was sticky and dust type of lint was inside it. I washed it and still was sticky, I used a very small amount of liquid grease, rubbed it in, then wipped it down. It's nice and flexible now. Fridge working like a charm. PS, best part, saved roughly $150.00 (Canadian). Just for the repair man to drop around to check for the problem. $85.00 plus tax to show up and diagnose problem , I would suspect would be another hour charge for repair. Being seniors I can assure you, the money saved will be well used for other important things in our lives. Thanks Matt, (Ace Appliance ) If I every see you around, the beer is on me.

We fixed this freeze problem 3 years ago on a Whirlpool top freezer. The problem is that you get some ice buildup in the tray (on the bottom of the freezer) and eventually the ice freezes over the small drain hole. In order to keep this drain hole permanently open and avoid a ice/water problem you need to install some kind of heat transference system. Whirlpool makes a very cheap "heat probe" which is Part Number: AP3119957. It is just a piece of aluminum that you attach to the auto defrost heater and the other end of the probe sits in the small drain hole. When the auto defrost heater cycles on (it does this several times a day) some of the heat is transferred down this aluminum probe and heats the top of the drain hole preventing freeze-over. It is actually a simply do it yourself fix for less than $10.

my 2nd gb2fhdxws07 ice in the bottom freezer failure in 6 years. first time i had the HD extend warranty, covered. i watched the AE Factory Service do it. putting in the new drain via the back was easier. inside, pulling out the basket looked moderate but he had trouble getting it back in (so note how you take it out). the de-ice took time, he used a scraper (this could be dangerous if you try with wrong tool and/or jab through something and break it. i thought he used a heat gun, can't remember. i believe the charge was USD290 (but covered). at that time i did look up and see this video and others say this drain tube was defective, bad rubber. the new IMPROVED drain tube lasted 1 year. i'm out of warranty. 1. NEVER purchase a WHIRLPOOL product of any kind! my neighbors have their washer front loader which has a class action suit and neighbor got a letter from whirlpool saying "if you don't join the class action we'll give you 5% off a new washer LOL!!!! we live in rural red country, he's a staunch conservative who's been ripped off so many times he supported Bernie Sander last run. when i call whirlpool for my fridge the first weeks for the loud noises, popping, clacking like fan is hitting something... they rudely said "no noise is covered at all, period." i talked to 5 people over the weeks and all were just as rude. (there's a nice way to crap on customers. and note, this comes from the 1% CEO directives not the nice americans working the customer support). all of us with this model should given free service because this drain tube is defective design/part problem. (and conservative think corporations can police themselves! LOL. right now there's no way to fight these corporate criminal actions except class action suits). AE Factory Service just moved their support center to the philippines 800-905-9505 give it a try if you don't believe me. the corporations with the criminal tax cuts were supposed to be making america great again? (note centurylink, samsung USA also just moved to philippines.). the mostly girls can understand english fairly well but they don't understand the meaning. ps. i love PI girls, there's no prejudice here, it's about trying to get my problem/issue understood and resolved. AE installed the old/bad part and it should be replaced at no charge, LOL good luck!!!

Thank you SO much! This video was very helpful and I'm really grateful you took the time to post it. Would cleaning the sticky grommet that leads to the drip pan behind the fridge theoretically solve the problem (i.e., stop the ice building up and spilling over onto the bottom of the freezer) at least temporarily (if you also defrosted/removed the ice building as well, I mean)?

What is the area behind the thermistor with the wire harness? I followed your instructions. After removing the back wall panel, the area was a block of ice. Would you know what device that is called? From my description of the issue, would it need replacing?

Like some other posts mentioned, a hair dryer or heat gun speeds up the process considerably. Also, if you are like me and fixed the problem, but are waiting for a p-trap to come in the mail. You can clean the sticky stuff off the grommet by soaking it in 1 part vegetable oil to 1 part dish soap.

How frequently does this grommet need to be changed? I'm concerned because this frig has really been having this problem since it was new, and we've completely thawed it more than once (but never changed the grommet). Where do I find this grommet (for purchase)? Thanks for posting this vid.

  • @stevekapp6462

My freezer freezes at the bottom once in awhile. But the tube isn’t clogged. It just freezes for some reason or another. I just let it thaw out and it will be fine for several months. But the hose that goes to the pan doesn’t have that grommet. It is just a 1/2” plastic hose. Could that be the problem, not having the grommet?

Hi this video is great! I was able to follow the instructions up through taking the inside cover off... Is it normal for there to be a solid block of ice on the "thing" located behind the cover where the thermistor is? Should I let the whole freezer defrost? Edit: Also the drain grommet was really stuck so I cleaned it up real good... Hopefully the ice block will melt and drain out of it?

    • @Appliancevideo
      @Appliancevideo  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks so much for this! I just called Whirlpool parts and they said they don't ship anything for free, so I ordered the gooseneck tube. With shipping and tax, the total was $45. Then I decided to call Whirlpool service and follow what you suggested, and lo and behold-they do have a service bulletin about the problem and their remedy is to ship the part out at no cost! So the rep processed my free order and now I'm on hold with the parts dept to cancel my original order.
