This is the second time in a few years that I have used this video to solve my freezer problem which says a lot about my ability to keep my vents clean. However, this video should receive an Oscar for clarity, brevity and accuracy on how to fully address the problem -- ESPECIALLY the thoughtful inclusion of how to put it all back together again in the right order. Simply the best.
Showing my hubby this video tonight so he can hopefully fix ASAP. It kills me to call an appliance repair who will charge me an arm and leg. Im so glad I found this video and will let you know how it goes!!
This video saved us $300! Our two yr old refrig started leaking water from the lower freezer drawer. We are located in the Colorado mountains, over an hour's drive from the nearest town. The repair service there quoted us $300 plus parts to come out to service it, noting that there would be a further travel charge if they had to order parts and drive out again.. We followed your video and found that the rubber nipple on the freezer drain tube was clogged. That fixed it! Thank You!

I just can't say enough about how much we appreciate the thorough, easy-to-follow directions you posted for fixing this problem. Our Maytag was only a month out of it's warranty when the sheeting ice started under the freezer baskets. It took my husband a couple of hours to do the job & this was his first time touching an appliance repair. You saved us hundreds of dollars! One thing I wondered about is the debris & sticky deposits we found inside the drip "nipple". I was prepared to find a chunk of food or lint or something being the cause but we found what looked like gravel blocking it. The rubber had some kind of adhesive residue which I had to scrub with de-greasing cleaner to remove. There is no way that stuff "fell" into the drain. It seems like it may have been in there all along from the factory just waiting to cause a problem. Perhaps shaken loose from the factory? Any tips on how to prevent this from happening again - what might be causing the sticky buildup or should we count on having to do this flushing process regularly? My husband wanted to just pull the nipple out altogether but we didn't in case there is some unknown reason for it to be there - engineering logic & all. I already posted you to my Facebook account & will refer EVERYONE who has an appliance issue to your videos. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you very much for supporting our site. Don’t take off the rubber nipple that prevents humidity from coming back into the freezer. That will cause ice buildup and other issues. We found in the field, once you clean out the drain once it normally does not come back. Our family-owned and operated company works hard to provide you with FREE, high-quality repair videos. I have done just this on several top mount freezers, but this is to be my first attempt on a bottom freezer. Your excellent step by step video will go a long way to take the uncertainty out of the procedure. Very helpful and very, very well done.

This was one of the most comprehensive, clear and helpful videos that I have ever watched. With minimal mechanical experience, I was able to follow each step and complete the repair myself. It took me about 3 hours, including some breaks and rechecks of the video, but it's DONE!!! It seems that an excess of animal hair around the underside pan & fan area might have been keeping it from working correctly. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

I had a feeling my condensate drain was plugged on my Maytag. This video was exactly what I needed to fix the issue. A little clog in that rubber piece at the end of the drain tube was clogged. A simple fix. Thanks so much for the video.

This is the video that Maytag should have on its site. Ridiculous that they give no indication of this problem and solution under the symptoms. Video was very, very helpful as we kept thinking it was a clogged drain tube. Thanks!

Did it today and all went well, thank you! It was nice hearing the water drip through after I heat gunned it some and poured cups of boiling water through it. I cut off a little of the rubber grommet thing at the end of the drain tube to hopefully prevent future clogs.

I have tried fixing this on my own a few times but didn't want to try taking something apart and not be able to put it back together or break it during disassembling the pieces. It was not that bad and your video gave me the confidence to take it all apart. Thank you. This was a different model and I had to take off the ice maker. It was just a few screws and disconnecting the wiring harness. I knew that I had unclogged it because when I added more water it just drained through.

Hey Brad, Refrigerator repairs can be be a bit tricky, and we're so happy your repair went well. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. 10 years later and this is still relevant for my older Maytag MFIxxx bottom drawer freezer. It's kind of annoying to have to take all of that apart just to unclog any ice. I guess if you had the time you could just let it thaw on its own and then just remove the back panel to clean that rubber outlet "nozzle", but since having your refrigerator out of commission for too long isn't practical in many cases, this is just what has to be done. Anyway, it does work, it just takes a bit of time, but not too complicated. Plus, I dusted the coils in back while I was at it. Those dust bunnies are probably what found their way into my very clogged nozzle.
Luckily this fridge is our 'extra', & I've already unplugged it twice & let it completely thaw... It's doing it again... I thought for sure the defroster was on the fritz & didn't really think it was worth fixing. I unplugged it now & left the doors open. Tomorrow I'll sop up the water, pull it out & clean the drain plug. Maybe shove a screwdriver up the drain hole before I put it back on. If you leave the ice/water in the upper drain pan, when you get it unclogged, water should run out & you know you've got it fixed. I suspect the rubber grommet gets sticky over time & sticks together sealing up the drain plug. Probably would be worth replacing it totally, as it'll just get stuck together again in the near future.
Very helpful! I was able to follow virtually every step in order on my Maytag bottom drawer freezer. The second time I've had to do this in several years. Hopefully not again soon. Thank you very much.Dave ParkerBel Air, MD

I really appreciate your video, I bought a model similar back in 2010 , I kept using a blow dryer like the sears guy said when this happens , but you showed me they did not know what they was talking about or were to last to remove the housing like you did , to get to the problem . , I know from your video I can do it my self , also my warranty with sears ran out a year ago , thanks so much for the vid and the knowledge and saving money no need to get a new warranty..thanks so much once again

Thanks for this video! I called a repairman and he told me $100 on my unit which is 18 months old (6 months out of warranty). I took all of the tools and tips and it took me almost 2 hours due to the amount of ice build up. The root cause was the rubber drip nozzle being gummed up. This is only cost me my time.
Troy There is a permanent fix for the rubber drip nozzle plugging up. It will happen again. Here is the video link to fix it for good. www.appliancevideo.com/update-drain-fix-kit-whirlpool-refrigerator-water-leaking/ Matt Ace Technician
Thank you very much. Great instructions and a simple fix. Slightly different model but the basics were the same. The nipple was clogged and very sticky which caused the build-up in back. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video it helped very much! One thing I want to add for those people who have a "Rainbow Vacuum" not only does it suck up the water from the ice melt but if you remove the exhaust plug and point it into the box it will thaw the condenser in less than 1/2 Hr. (win win) Thanks Again.

That's a clear, logical explanation. Can you tell me how the defrost works in these devices? Is it like a heat pump, where the system occasionally goes into a 'reverse defrost cycle', causing the condenser to become the evaporator, and the evaporator to become the condenser?
It has a defrost system that works with a defrost control. The defrost control lets a electric defrost heater come on every 4-6 hours to defrost the evaporator. Thank you for your positive comment. Two quick comments: Nice job explaining the process. There is a tube that Maytag/Whirlpool will send owners of these French door/bottom freezer units which will (I hope, just got mine today) prevent this from recurring. They did not charge for it, nor should they considering the poor engineering involved in the original design. Thanks again for a great video.
Will Thanks for the positive input on our video. Please follow up with us on how the new tube installation goes. We like feedback. Thanks Matt Ace technician
Follow-up post-installation. Thanks to your video, I was able to disassemble and reassemble the freezer compartment. And this would have had a very quick and pleasant outcome for me had it not been for the fact that I got sloppy during the removal of the old drain "gutter". I tore it from the bottom of the drip pan. I should've realized that the fitting was tabbed and had to be released. When I saw someone remove the piece on another video, it appeared that they just reached in and yanked. Maytag offered a new drip pan when they realized that I had an actionable case, as my laminate just under the freezer had been damaged by the leak during our vacation. Wisdom from this event: research brands before buying 6 new appliances for your house. And check TH-cam for everything you do, before you do it.
Thank you! My fridge is less than 1 year old. The water that kept leaking out ruined my beautiful bamboo floors. Looks like this may be a common problem. :(

This is a great video and saved me a bunch. One comment though:You check and clear the duck bill valve after clearing ice from behind the panel at the back of the freezer.Shouldn't this be done first ? otherwise the water/ice will not drain when "basted".Just a thought

+ApplianceVideo.com I am stuck in the middle of this project because we have an ice maker on the top left. I don't know what to do to remove the icemaker so that I can continue with taking off the back panel. Your step by step has been so helpful and I have it all disassembled except for the back panel. I can't find a video on the website that instructs on what to do with model kenmore 596.72003016....the freezer keeps icing over on the inside and then pooling out onto the floor. It was a $1600 refrigerator that is two years old. I want to scream.

Did it myself with your instructions, not bad for a mom of two who can't afford $300 for a job that wasn't difficult at all. Question is, is this a manufacturer issue- does this solve the issue for good or is this something i need to do for maintenance?

Thank you for the video. I was able to remove and clean the rubber drain valve in less than 30 minutes. It was clogged with dirt and dust, causing the water to back up and freeze inside my freezer. FYI...when I first called a repair service to perform the work, the service person who responded to my house, out right lied to me claiming the freezer had to be defrosted for 72 hours prior, and part was deep inside the refrigerator amongst some insulation. Liars and thieves!

Great video, sir! Would this help with my problem (taken from my post in a repair forum)? "A couple of months ago, I saw my fridge leaking from the bottom. I opened the bottom freezer and saw a 'pool' of ice in the indented pan inside. I took out the bottom drawer and tapped it until the ice was loose. No more ice! Well, a couple weeks later, the same thing happened. Everything else seems to run just fine. Any help would be fantastic!"

If you find your 30 year old turkey baster has a hole in the bulb like mine did, you can use a waterpik filled with hot water or a steam cleaner concentrator attachment.

My thoughts exactly. I replaced a $600 fridge that didn't have any problem besides being old and ugly. It never caused any troubles, but it also didn't make ice, so I guess that's the trade off. But to answer your question, I think the truest answer is because (the execs at appliance companies don't repair their appliances, they have them fixed or simply replaced by the hired help) people that buy such gadgets are accustomed to the disposable appliance business model.

I have a spare fridge. Could I just move all my foods to my spare and just unplug my Maytag and wait till it melts on its own and clean up and empty the drain pan at that time. Would that work?

many house owners make a lot of mistakes to close the doors of refrigerator that cause continue working of compressors that's why the unit build up an ice so it will not catch up the heater to melt the existing ice inside the compartment..a HUMAN ERROR that cause to pay money..

Did it today and all went well, thank you! It was nice hearing the water drip through after I heat gunned it some and poured cups of boiling water through it. I cut off a little of the rubber grommet thing at the end of the drain tube to hopefully prevent future clogs.

Faye
Great, let us know how the repair works out for your husband.

This is the video that Maytag should have on its site. Ridiculous that they give no indication of this problem and solution under the symptoms. Video was very, very helpful as we kept thinking it was a clogged drain tube. Thanks!

Troy, great video, I can work on semis, diesels and heavy equipment all day long, but this frig was kicking my butt until I caught your video!
Hey Brad,

Troy
There is a permanent fix for the rubber drip nozzle plugging up. It will happen again. Here is the video link to fix it for good. www.appliancevideo.com/update-drain-fix-kit-whirlpool-refrigerator-water-leaking/ Matt Ace Technician
Thank you very much. Great instructions and a simple fix. Slightly different model but the basics were the same. The nipple was clogged and very sticky which caused the build-up in back. Thanks again!

One thing I want to add for those people who have a "Rainbow Vacuum" not only does it suck up the water from the ice melt but if you remove the exhaust plug and point it into the box it will thaw the condenser in less than 1/2 Hr. (win win)

Will
Thanks for the positive input on our video.
+Will Gaudreau How were you able to get the tube from manufacturer? Did it work? Thanks rangemastr@aol.com
Thank you! My fridge is less than 1 year old. The water that kept leaking out ruined my beautiful bamboo floors. Looks like this may be a common problem. :(
Tracy
Yes, this is a common problem. If you order the new drain kit by model it will correct the issue. Thanks Matt

Regla

My problem is, WHY does this happen to a new refrigerator that costs over $1400?

Did it today and all went well, thank you! It was nice hearing the water drip through after I heat gunned it some and poured cups of boiling water through it. I cut off a little of the rubber grommet thing at the end of the drain tube to hopefully prevent future clogs.
