Tbh the standard top down bleed method is so easy there's no point spending hard earned dosh on a big syringe or vacuum bleeder etc. You'd have done it quicker too.

Del’s done that method many times, but this looks simpler and easier with one person.
But if you change a component, like a brake line, it can be really hard to get all the air out.
Once it took me 2 hours to achieve bubble free bleed fluid on a dual caliper front brake after replacing the lines with braided ones. There was two of us, one on each end, using a hose submerged in a clear drinks bottle as a waste reservoir where the bubbles could be seen. Which caused a bit of anxiety as we were heading off to Spain only days later.
@@buzzman3200 been there, done that too! I learnt the trick to degassing the master cylinder (usual culprit) is to tap on the lever. Imagine tickling it to get the bubbles out.
I like the reverse method used here when the system is completely empty. I will confess however that my personal preference is a vacuum bleeder if the system is just getting a flush. Just less use of the syringe is all. Appreciate that many people prefer the way they do it over other methods but the point is the same. ✌🏻
There are many ways to skin the same cat buddy, I guess if you've learned each method, it empowers you to make a choice aye?!
Great clean method for those tasks Del. No bleeding either. I'm not familiar with Sealey being from the U.S. but it seems like they have everything a gearhead could ever want. Reminds me a little of the Roadrunner cartoons where Wile E. I have the same syringe and you make it look so easy brother, the clear hose wasn't properly attached to the bleeder valve and i had brake fluid all over the place lol . Hey Renzo, always good to hear from you, and yes, isn't brake servicing always a messy business! For what it's worth, I generally snip off the last 1/2" of the plastic hose every time I re-use it as it gets stretched, then likes to pop off under pressure and deposit brake fluid up the wall! Superb primer on changing brake fluid a bit differently. Every time I use similar gear and gloves to change the fluids on our 2 bikes, my wife always asks me if I’m a frustrated wanna be proctologist. Go figure.

Looked like a very thorough service Del, nice job. 2 items if I may. At 1:15 you cut a zip tie. If you cut it, but don't cut off the head part, you have a perfectly good zip tie to use again somewhere else. Just pull out the small toothed section from the head. The other item is a question. Can you hook that syringe to the bleeder and pull adding fresh fluid to the reservoir as it drains? I have no idea, but thought thats how pressure bleeders worked. Are bikes different? And yes, I just ate my lunch.

Hey Joe, yes you can do it that way, it's entirely possible, but then there is no way to verify that you have all the old waterlogged fluid out.. When you drain down the fluid, and refill the reservoir, thats perfect fresh fluid up top, so question:- how many fills do you drag down through the system before all the lower fluid is flushed?.. you cannot check at the caliper end!... but if you push the fluid upwards, then when the reservoir contents read clear on the test pen... you're entire system is purged. Years ago I owned a Daytona 750, the thing was like a flaming barge to ride and constantly breaking down..... Needless to say I didn't have it long 😂
I’ve gone both ways… I liked the reverse system, helped clean the system. Really depends on situations. I believe both systems works well in everyone’s preferences. 👍
The benefit of doing it this way buddy is that you can actually test the results in the reservoir. If you push the fluid downwards you're chasing the water loggers stuff down to the caliper where you can't test if it's been flushed clear, but pushing it upwards, you can test the fluid as many times as you need to, and let's have it the caliper gets hottest so that's the place you want the freshest fluid and the least water content! Definitely easier to do on your own unless the bike has quick bleeders on the calipers. Good way to bleed if the system is dry/empty. Will have to look into the brake fluid tester. Good tool to have. Thanks

I change my brake fluid at regular intervals, but living in a dry desert of Arizona, the tester never shows any moisture. I change it anyway, because clean brake fluid has got to be better for the system.

Great Video! I do like the reverse bleed method with syringes, I'd recommend buying a couple of smaller 30ml Luer Lock syringes (£1 each) with some PVC hose and use them independently for each task.💪
The seals in those cheap syringes don't even last the length of the job, you do have to push quite hard on them, which is why the double seals in this syringe work perfectly with no issues, on a cheap syringe you'll end up pushing the seal past the fluid, ending up in a right mess... cheap ain't good and good ain't cheap buddy!
@@Moonfleet41 Although a cheap (disposable) syringe for emptying the reservoirs so you don't need to clean the correct one each time you switch from charge to empty. If you get my drift.
@@Moonfleet41 gotcha, I've not really experienced that but can see the benefit of the Sealy unit for the pressure side of things, maybe the ideal would be to just use a cheaper syringe for the vacuum emptying part to save you switching on each step..👍
Another +1 for using a second syringe to empty the reservoir. It would have saved you a tonne of time and mine has lasted a few years now

Yes you can, works just as well for ABS !

The daytona super 3 had 6 pot calipers the same ones as the later mk2 bandit 1200. But badged triumph. I put them on my Daytona 1200. After extensive research on the triumph forums. Never had any problems with them on the triumph or any of my mk2 1200 bandits. General opinion is they're rubbish. I think like anything, if you maintain and install them properly they'll work as intended. No idea why I said that considering the trophy super 3 has Nissins on it.

I think you make a very good point that applies to so many different things on bike components.. Aside from the usual brand snobbery, there are always slaters once a reputation gets traction.. Hayabusa calipers in particular, but if they are properly maintained and regularly serviced, they all work just fine or the factories would hardly have bolted them to a 200mph bike..lol! Can this method be used on a linked brake system like on a vfr ?
I remove the calipers from there mountings and dump the contents from the calipers after removing the fluid from the master cylinder then just gravity bleed the system

A 'fluid' proof syringe (& spare 'rubbers') is always useful; but the 'backflush' method does need a better name:
'Caliper-Enemas R'us - We push all them little bubbles up to Heaven & if that thought doesn't brake you, nothing will'. : )xx

So you said the brake fluid has to be changed every 2 years, what’s the point of testing it? Seems like a pointless tool really. Can I ask why you didn’t just use the syringe to drain all the fluid from the bleed nut?

No indeed, the first push up is the gunk from the line so obviously trash, but interesting, specially on the clutch, that the second and even third push up, was still holding water, not until the 4th quantity did it finally wash clear! Something you can't check by just bleeding downwards and not testing it...
Good grief, I've just bought one of those syringes last saturday . Filled my RD350 two stroke tank with it.
You could do with a turkey Baster for the top end to save cleaning the syringe out every time, Asda do them
Great video, Del and Penny. Very well demonstrated. I like the idea of the syringe and the electronic tester. For general bleeding I like my vacuum pump but for complete replacement your method of sucking the old from the top and pushing up the new from the bottom makes a lot of sense - any bubbles go up into the master cylinder reservoir to pop at the surface instead of down into the lines and caliper / slave cylinder to lurk with intent to commit sponginess. AND - the idea of a little rubber lube on the side panel tab grommets never occurred to me but it's a really good one! Thanks a bunch for the great tips. Take care of yourselves and be well.

The main benefit of pushing the fluid up from below is that as you purge the old fluid away, you have the quantity in the reservoir to test for water content.. you push the new fluid in the caliper until what's in the caliper is moisture free... this guarantees it's all gone which you can't check by bleeding downwards and you could end up with moisture content in the caliper which is the worst place for it to be! All the first T300 bikes had twin front discs, did you do them both alternately, or individually?. Also, where do you dispose of old brake and clutch fluid?. Another easily do-able home mechanic job, just make sure you have the right tools, INCLUDING 2 SYRINGES 😂.
Hi Neil, do the left caliper first, then the right as usual, brake fluid goes with the waste oil to the local recycling centre for licensed disposal. And buy 2 syringes if you wish, they have plenty in stock!

With ABS yes, but linked systems vary according to how they're setup !
A cheap turkey baster to suck out the old fluid will save yku a bunch of time between cleanout the master cylinders and backfilling from the bleader
'a bunch of time'?, it takes a few seconds to wipe out the syringe, I don't particularly want cookery implements cluttering up my garage, and you've still got to clean it up at the end which will take you another bunch of time!

Yeah, it works just fine.. do the right caliper first, then the left and you'll chase it all through !
It would be faster if you just buy a second syringe just for dirty fluid. Work smarter not harder

When you take off the master cylinder cover on an English bike do you still need to use the Japanese screw driver, if that makes sense ?

I know the rear brakes on mine need doing. Going to try this reverse bleed method. Looks easier for doing it on your own.

🤔 Bit confused here mate, i bought one of these Fluid Syringes from Sweden few months back, recommended by The Austin Powers Fan website, was only £ 8 with P&P, yours looks way different to mine, mine came with rubber sleeves, though i will say this,,, 😉 The Bride was more pleased i bought it even more than me and the Triumph America was LOL 🤣😂🤪
It would have been good for you to show taking a measurement of the moisture content of the new fluid, just to demonstrate the difference.

Any reason to do bottom-to-top instead of top-to-bottom? Like if we don't have that big syringe.
Both ways work, but some people struggle with regular bleeding!! just an option mate, do what works for you. !
