The thing about the martial law point, I'm a foreigner living in Korea, and I was very terrified, but it felt like us foreigners had no right to do anything or complain, it was very scary. But yeah, of course people don’t have to speak up, but not speaking up is still a choice you made. Your choices reflect on you, they are part of who you are. Naturally people are gonna have some sort of judgement of you based on your actions and choices. Some people see not speaking up as being bystanders, some see it as nothing important, while others see it as something more complicated and each are totally valid. Everyone is entitled to feel and think however they want, but other people are also allowed to feel and think however they want about you based on that. For instance (different scenario I’m not talking about Korea right now), to me genocide is one of the most evil things ever. So if I see a genocide going on I’d want to stop that. However I can only do so much, I will still do everything in my power but I will also look to people that have more power and more impact because they’re the ones that can really make a big change. It’s easier to spread a message when you’re powerful, rich and/or have a large audience with people that listen to you. To then see these people that actually have power and a way to make a bigger impact not helping will feel frustrating and disappointing, people are allowed to express that. (as long as it’s not through violence or crimes. Although that’s a bit of a gray area too like riots, revolutions and self defense.) You’re allowed to be apathetic but people are allowed to judge you based on that. Being apathetic reflects on your morals, what you think is right and wrong is a big part of who you are as a person. For instance, saying you’re neutral on ww2 means you’re okey with genocide, massacres, torture, war, human experimentation, ect…it means you’re neutral to all of that. You’re allowed to be neutral to it, it’s not illegal or forbidden. But people are allowed to dislike you based on that. Usually normal people don’t like being around people that are okey with murder or torture and stuff like that, so you can’t really blame them. Not saying you’re wrong or right, just trying to show different perspectives and maybe make it a bit more clear as to why people care about stuff like this. Whether you agree or not, it’s still good to learn other’s perspectives in order to understand why they feel that way. But yeah, of course people don’t have to speak up, but not speaking up is still a choice you made. Your choices reflect on you, they are part of who you are. Naturally people are gonna have some sort of judgement of you based on your actions and choices. Some people see not speaking up as being bystanders, some see it as nothing important, while others see it as something more complicated and each are totally valid. Everyone is entitled to feel and think however they want, but other people are also allowed to feel and think however they want about you based on that.
For instance (different scenario I’m not talking about Korea right now), to me genocide is one of the most evil things ever. So if I see a genocide going on I’d want to stop that. However I can only do so much, I will still do everything in my power but I will also look to people that have more power and more impact because they’re the ones that can really make a big change. It’s easier to spread a message when you’re powerful, rich and/or have a large audience with people that listen to you. To then see these people that actually have power and a way to make a bigger impact not helping will feel frustrating and disappointing, people are allowed to express that. (as long as it’s not through violence or crimes. Although that’s a bit of a gray area too like riots, revolutions and self defense.)
You’re allowed to be apathetic but people are allowed to judge you based on that. Being apathetic reflects on your morals, what you think is right and wrong is a big part of who you are as a person. For instance, saying you’re neutral on ww2 means you’re okey with genocide, massacres, torture, war, human experimentation, ect…it means you’re neutral to all of that. You’re allowed to be neutral to it, it’s not illegal or forbidden. But people are allowed to dislike you based on that. Usually normal people don’t like being around people that are okey with murder or torture and stuff like that, so you can’t really blame them.
Not saying you’re wrong or right, just trying to show different perspectives and maybe make it a bit more clear as to why people care about stuff like this. Whether you agree or not, it’s still good to learn other’s perspectives in order to understand why they feel that way. Understanding why someone thinks the way they think will make it easier to find common ground and mutual understanding. Sorry, I was bored and decided to write an essay I guess lol
