Should You Quit Your Day Job to Pursue Creative Entrepreneurship Full Time?

- Changing career is scary. The longer we've been paid to do something, the harder it might be to make the jump to do something else, especially if we're good at it.
In this video, I'm going to share my framework of 3 things to think about when you are considering leaving your corporate job to pursue a creative passion. When is it a good time to take your side hustle full time?
I've changed my career a few times in my life, but the last one had been the most drastic. It took a windy road to get here, as I'm sure it was for many other career changers. What I do know is you'll never know exactly WHEN to quit your current job/career to pursue something you love.
The right timing isn't a sudden epiphany you have when you wake up or are pondering about life in the shower. It's usually this nagging feeling that keeps getting stronger and stronger until you can't bear it anymore except to do something about it. BUT, for some of us, our logical brain is at odds with our emotional brain, and misery alone isn't good enough reason to give up something "good enough".

well said! the attention seeking headlines of people who go all in and “make it” in a short period of time are not realistic.
My story: I was pretty much thrown into building my art business full-time. Most of my life I've focused on Admin jobs because I thought it was a steady stable and secure position, but ironically I was laid off due to the pandemic. This opened my eyes that no job is ever 100% secure, especially if you're relying on someone else being your boss. I was in no position to take this lightly, as I am a wife, and have a 6 year old in Kindergarten which I have been pretty much homeschooling since classes have been remote. Plus I am almost completely self-taught, and still learning. Using my unemployment, and being approved for the SEAP, I'm taking the dive to make this happen. Mari's Spot is the name of my business, and I have been learning so much from your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your advice, especially the struggles, because it helps us realize we're all struggling.

This is awesome. I think you were very realistic in how you framed what to do. I myself had to learn the hard way and kind of just jumped the gun without any plan or support at the time. Now, I am more prepared and have the support of my husband, as well as the experience and skills earned while preparing for this leap.

This is very informing ^^ I normally get regular commissions myself although I remember my mom constantly telling me I wont have a retirement if I have my own business .. Im still pursuing it regardless although that stays stuck in my head.
I can tell you that I’m saving for retirement as much if not more than I did with my 9-5 job. It’s possible.
Thank you for this great video. This might be the only video I’ve seen that addresses the issue from someone who was mid career. In my case I’m over 25 years into a design career - multimedia then web design followed Flash banners and motion design. I’ve used my illustration skills along the way but never became the illustrator/artist I thought I’d be.
It’s really good that your video considers factors like having kids in school, living in a high price neighbourhood, mortgage, savings and having financial support from a spouse. In my situation my income accounts for over 80 percent of the household income and my two kids are 7 years apart so their needs and their stage of schooling are quite different. Also physical health is for me a factor in my late 40s so there are concerns about reversing any decision if I had to go back. I’m glad you touched on that too as it’s not going to work out for everyone or it might not work first time.
Hi Nick, thank you for sharing. I made this video for this very reason, because I haven’t seen anyone talk about making the leap mid career when there’s so much more on the line. I left my corp job before we had kids but after we bought a house, and I was contributing to half of our household income, so I definitely felt the obligations, guilt, and pressure to “make it”. Now that we are parents, our career decisions affect more people around us, there’s more to lose. I understand all your points and it’s good that you’re prioritizing your health first.

Thanks for this helpful video. I am one of those has moved and lists lots of jobs over the years and even though it was difficult it worked out ok but still I have not made that step for my art yet.
I am taking the route of going part time work when my mortgage is paid off and doing what I can between now and that. I will have that paid off in the next 2-3 years. But I think it is possible but you have to make your own strategy. Thanks for your video.

Thank you, sooooo much for this! I've been wondering if it was even possible to realistically replace my income and quit work. Sounds like I'm going to have to wait. Need stable income, and my time is going to be jeopardized soon here by homeschooling my gifted 4 yr old while I work nights. It's going to have to be a hobby with the happenstance of small income on the side for a while.
