    Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

You'll never get there then buddy. While you're fetching paper from the fax machine in the office, some hungry mofo from detroit quits his job and travels to la with just a dream and kicks in the door of some Hollywood producer, gets his feet wet and learns the ropes before his big break.
Nothings gonna fall on your lap, gotta go get it. How hungry are you?

@@Slynell1 ironically I agree with as well lol, I'm no screen writer but I am a composer. I've managed to get 4 different publishing contracts in several continents from home while still having my job. The route you mentioned doesnt seem possible at all lol but it could happen for him that way. I think the question isn't "how hungry is he?" But rather "does he have to starve?" Only you screen writers know this...

Most artists just aren’t that lucky, I regret to say. For around seven years, I’ve been trying to succeed as a writer, but I’ve only made around thirty dollars off of my writing, to my utter disappointment. As of now, I’m living with my parents, but I know I can’t do that forever. Other than being a writer, I also want to find a wife, get married, and hopefully have a family. Sadly, most women, despite what they might say, won’t date starving artists. Thus far, I just don’t see how writing fiction will lead to a sustainable income, let alone future. If I force myself to get a soulless job, I will be miserable, but at same time, if I remain in the situation that I’m in now, I will also be miserable. Regardless of what I do, there just doesn’t seem to be a realistic way out for me. No one, it seems, cares for artists, including most artists. If an artist becomes successful, people might care, but otherwise, no one really cares for the deeper pleasures of life.

@@McKinzieENT I hate to put it this way but I'm fairly certain most PEOPLE don't date people who don't have a lot of a money--especially if they're looking for a long term relationship. It's not a "women aren't being honest" thing. It's a "people want don't want to date people who can't give equally to a relationship". Whether it's emotionally or more concretely, equality is important in a relationship

Hey Joseph. Well, unlike a lot of people who talk about what they want to do, you at least had the guts to go for it! I went the other direction: I chose to have a family. My father was the starving artist/author/poet and he bailed on all of us when I was five. I saw him twice in 16 years and he died penniless. I wasn't making the same mistake. I chose stability first. And the great thing is that now, after twenty years, we are finally at the point where my wife and kids are encouraging me to go for it and chase down the dream. There's only so many moments in the hourglass of life but you can do it!

BUNUEL - OZU - HERZOG all got their start in foreign countries and English was their second language. They didn't need to live in Hollywood and created some of the greatest films of all time. I highly doubt it's necessary to live there esp with 21st Century technology.

It takes “faith” combined with “wisdom” to leap out like this. Follow the plan of God for your life. Everyone isn’t called or should leave their job. If you heard the Lord say do it, run fast. His plans for your life never fails when we’re sitting at His feet in prayer.

This is terrible advice that I believed for a long time. I finally got my head out my behind and realized YOU NEED TO WORK AND MAKE MONEY WHILE YOU WORK ON YOUR ART. You also need time to reflect on and think about your art. It’s not productive to put every single minute of your life into your art. I’ve gotten some of my best ideas while at work, while on a walk, while taking a shower. You also need to eat and pay bills and make some goals that are not, “When I hit it big, I’ll finally buy that house or start investing or saving for retirement or whatever.” You can plan those things while working on your art.
I find I am more productive with my own work and my art when I am not stressing about where my next paycheck is coming from. Stress is not a great creativity motivator.

And many film directors actually say you shouldn't even attend film directing classes, you better read a lot.

Now this is what i call, "selling dreams" I am a full time freelance writer and let me tell you, it is much harder than working a regular job. I have to work a minimum of 5 projects just to pay rent. I lived in LA for two months to expand my business but got nowhere. Los Angeles is a place where one has to be willing to build relationships. When I say "build relationships" im talking about selling your soul( use your imagination) My advice to anyone, is to build your own publishing, production, or writing company. Trying to break into Hollywood is like winning the lottery.l; trust me, none of us are that special. If things don't go my way in the next few years, I am already prepared to go into either journalism or Tech

What if an artist like me is unemployed and has no day job to quit? Should I get that day job everyone is telling me I need to have security and happiness and then quit it to be truly happy as an artist? Because I'm telling you now no one in my circle of friends or family takes an artist's life seriously at all. Basically get a job and you can stand with the normal people. At some point we AS ARTIST have to decide if OUR VISION is worth the (often literal) sacrifice. For many of us WE ARE NOT FROM HOLLYWOOD. We don’t participate in the glamour and seduction that’s Hollywood. Yet and still we are artist we are visionary’s. The same “artist” in these comments who are listing “politically and social conscious” rhetoric as an EXCUSE as to why HIS ADVICE is folly are the same Artist who will be disappointed when their vision doesn’t take off because of rooted excuses. Atheism in your Artistry can not coexist. Mr. Jason best advice on the internet

A lot to argue with in this interview (although not all of what he says by any means). Anyone looking for inspiration from a truly successful person would do well to study the story of Britt Marlin, Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij. They DID NOT KNOW ANYONE WHEN THEY MOVED TO LA. They had no money and the only experience they had was making a couple of short films in high school.
So why did they succeed when others did not? A lot of hard work and sheer raw talent in my view. No amount of work can make up for a basic lack of talent. I would love to see a Film Courage interview with Britt and/or Britt, Mike Cahill and Zal Batmanglij. That would be worth watching.
PS: I should mention that Britt did quit her day job ... a seriously lucrative career path with Goldman Sachs. The world would have been a much poorer place if she had not chosen to follow her heart.
