With rumors of a Melee HD coming to Nintendo Switch, Did You Know Gaming takes a look at some facts, secrets, Easter eggs and history of Super Smash Bros Melee! SSBM was developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Gamecube. The game was preceded by Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64 (N64), and followed by Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii, as well as Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. This series is a crossover of Nintendo characters, including Mario, Donkey Kong, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Samus from Metroid, Ness from Earthbound, Captain Falcon from F-Zero, Yoshi, Kirby, Star Fox and Pikachu and Jigglypuff from Pokemon among others. Through our analysis of the game, its gameplay and its beta, we hope to show some of the more interesting facts we found and have its history explained.

Always thought it was weird that the DK Rap said 'Hell' in the E for Everyone Donkey Kong 64 but they changed it to 'Heck' for the T for Teen Melee.

Rare are a British studio and hell isn't really a swear word outside of the US. I guess Nintendo never realized it until after it released. It's also fixed in later releases.

Hence why it baffles me that some people STILL have the guts to say he's lazy or things of that nature. It's not frequent, but I see it from time to time. There's a lot of things people might disagree with, and that's perfectly their right, but this man is anything but lazy.

To be honest, upon release Melee was still in the relative infancy of the internet. So most people actually played it with real friends and were oblivious to a "competitive scene".
I checked this on Snopes and it was false. The last known Melee player was tragically wobbled to death in 2011. Some say thet a casual player exists out there in the wild, but scientists have yet to find conclusive evidence.

There's still more mario characters and it makes more sense with fire emblem. Each game has a different universe that doesn't cross over with others so you need to add main characters from an entirely different game.

Jesus, this game series was actually killing Sakurai. But I swear it would never be the same if he didn't have something to do with it.
Austin Mendoza However it's time for a new director for the series if you ask me because of Sakurai's stupid and insane logic when it comes to certain things (ex. Letting Lucina be a separate character because small difference in abilities equals character slot according to him), his extreme bias to certain franchises (ex. The amount of Kid Icarus content in Smash 4) and extremely dumb decisions (ex. removing story mode from smash 4)
There is nothing wrong with making filler characters in fighting games, after all, they can be done in days compared to a character made from scratch (Lucina is also a fan favorite). Filthy casuals can never let go with "bias" can they? End of the day you played the game and you forgot about the Kid Icarus trophies. How it is extremely dumb to remove story mode when it wasn't the big deal and it costs time and money? See? Only people like Sakurai can direct this games, foolish nerds like you would make the game a mess.
If I had any reason to want to see Sakurai step down as Smash-director, it'd be for his sake, more than that of the game. Smash Bros is just great. That's not to say it couldn't be better, or that it's unthinkable that another director could perhaps do certain things better, but nobody can deny what outstanding games have been produced under his watch. Even if Sakurai does hand over the job to someone else, I'm sure he'd still be involved *somehow*.
Juan776 Brawl's story mode was one of my favorite things about the game. I get why it was cut, (Although Sakurai chalked it up to some stupid shit about being posted online.). It was way better then that shitty board game, master and crazy orders, and the trash that is the new classic mode in Smash 4. Considering Smash is a cross over series a decent story mode makes a lot of sense. It took someone with Sakurai's work ethic and mind set to make the series but not all of his decisions are good ideas.
Brandonious15987 as someone above me say, he has great ideas and bad ideas, after all he is a human, and human make mistakes every once in a while, but I don't want him directing the game not by his bad ideas, but because he is going to die if he do another game, the game industrie need more people like sakurai that give his soul and his body to his creation, we can't lose someone like him just for over working himself

If Melee had Wario playable, there would have been 6 Mario characters (8 if counting Yoshi and Donkey Kong) out of 26, whereas SSB4 has 9 Mario characters (12 if you count Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong) out of 58, which is a much smaller fraction of the total number.

Did you know that Shogo Sakai was one of the lead composers for Melee. Sakai also worked on the entire soundtrack of Mother 3, and you can really hear some of the similarities in the instruments he uses in both soundtracks.
Mother 3 and melee had amazing music.

MOTHER 3's soundtrack is by far the weakest MOTHER series soundtrack...it's such a bummer that Hirokazu Tanaka and Keiichi Suzuki weren't available to work on it due to other commitments. The soundtrack isn't bad, but it's nowhere near as memorable, beautiful, or timeless as MOTHER's and MOTHER 2's. It really made that game feel very separate from the other two games, so instead of feeling like a cohesive trilogy, it feels like a game and its sequel, and then this other game that is also kind of tacked on. The story of 3 is amazing, but its music simply doesn't do it justice. Nowhere near enough musical callbacks to the first two games' soundtracks.
I understand your point, but I think it being non-cohesive is more of a strong point. Think about it; Mother 3 takes place hundreds of years after Earthbound, on an island literally called the Nowhere Islands. In that case, it *should* feel sort of disconnected from the first two games.
I'd also argue that songs like Happy Town?, Mind of a Thief, His Highness' Theme, and of course the Love Theme are all just as memorable as songs like Polyanna, Onett, Fourside, or The Place.
This is the last Nintendo game to had the N64 era art style, as in the Gamecube era give the characters a Pixar makeover.
Can't tell you how much we played this in high school. Some of the most fun I'll ever have playing a video game.

I really liked when they had cooperation between companies for when they included solid snake, and sonic. I remember when that was announced so many kids were excited to be able to play as other characters with the likes of Mario and Link.

It's crazy that they worried so much about what characters were popular in the west, when it's because of Smash Bros. that Fire Emblem is as popular as it is now, and there's a huge demand for Mother 3 to be localized.
I would honestly love for Sakurai to come out and explain what characters he really wanted to put in the games and give us details on what their move sets would consist of.

It's interesting to see just how much Melee changed western gaming. Had Sakurai and his team been given more time to work on the game, we would be living with a very different Nintendo landscape. Who knows? Mother 3 may have even gotten a chance in the US if Lucas had been added in Melee.
Also, it's cool to see that Sakurai never truly gives up on good ideas. We finally got Ditto in Ultimate, exactly as it was meant to be implemented. Sonic and Snake were added in Brawl, of course. 8-player Smash arrived in Smash for Wii U. I wonder if there are other ideas he would like to add that still can't quite be implemented.

The amount of care put into Melee really shows. I remember playing HUNDREDS of hours on this game and the graphics and music blew my fucking mind. In terms of content, Melee is the best.

I remember two years ago, I was playing Melee and I chose tournament mode. While I was selecting the character, it glitched out and guess what character was selected, Ditto. I could not believe it! Once I started the match though, the game crashed. I had to restart the Wii by unplugging the power cable. It wouldn't turn off with the off button. That is why I agree, that Ditto was cut late into Melee's development.
