Animal Crossing, known as Dobutsu no Mori (Animal Forest) in Japan, was developed and published by Nintendo. There have been four major titles in the series: Animal Crossing (Gamecube), Wild World (Nintendo DS), City Folk (Nintendo Wii), and New Leaf (Nintendo 3DS). However, the series originally started out on the Nintendo 64 (N64) in Japan. This game was built upon multiple times, and ultimately released in the west on the Gamecube. Through our analysis of the series, its gameplay and beta builds, we hope to give you the most interesting facts we can find.

A lot of mundane things are weirdly successful in videogames. Random building..? Minecraft happened. Senseless farming..? Farmville worked, for some reason. Plumbing..? With enough imagination, that somehow turned into the world's most iconic game.

That's been around forever. Animal Crossing OGs will remember those shiny spots you had to bury a Shovel in to get the Golden Shovel.

I find it hard to believe that the kind of person who enjoys playing Animal Crossing would intentionally sabotage other players' towns with the seeds. It seems so malicious and far-removed from this type of game.
Trust me, it has happened. I remember being on a forum a long time ago and players being very suspicious of others because of the seeds and people ruining others towns by ruining flowers and such. Also in New Leaf there is an exploit where players can go to the island with random people and can get blocked from leaving the island or going on tours. Really sucky and I see it a lot but people are pretty rude, even in Animal Crossing.
That's just shitty. God forbid I have a nice, relaxing time in Animal Crossing.
At least the people behind the New Leaf hacks are preventing people from using seeds online. Thank God, I don't want another Wild World seeding tragedy to happen.

I hack New Leaf a lot and I'm surprised I haven't been banned from TBT forums or ACC forums even though I've stated that I hack the game a lot. They still lock your threads if you mention the word 'hack' though. T_T

I'm in an animal crossing group on Facebook and just the other day a girl was on the international islands and this hacker hacked in wrapped, gift wrapped, petition forms. No matter what she did she couldn't get rid of them

Playing animal crossing on the Gamecube and Wii is a big no-no for me when it is storming out. Power outages = Resetti time. I don't miss that but everything else I do =D

That's one of my favourite movies of all time. I'm surprised it didn't get mentioned in this video since only die-hard fans mostly know about it. Also, 2007? The film was released on December 16th, 2006 (over 10 years ago, shame we've never had a video game movie as good as that since then). I really liked the scenes with Hopper in the movie, how he just wants to catch a fish but stays at the same spot for a YEAR and ends up catching odd stuff such as bikes and a Moai statue. I remember trying to watch the movie on it's 10th anniversary (December 16th 2016) as a tribute but was unable to do so due to being busy and depressed so I had to watch it a few days later. I think that the reason why this movie works, unlike some other video game movies, is because it's made by a legendary company who cares about what they make and are interested in the source material. Said company is TOHO (yes, the company that created Godzilla).

I watched the English fandub back in 2016 since it's difficult for me to read subtitles for an hour and 27 minutes (that and the kissanime's subtitles are a bit off, using 'your' instead of 'you're'). I'm surprised at how good the English fandub is. Usually, English fandubs tend to be okay to pretty cringey but this time it was really good (to the point where it even sounded better than the original, excluding Sable's, Mabel's and Celeste's voices. I think the Able Sisters should sound younger (Mabel sounds too old and Sable sounds like a guy) and Celeste needs to step a bit furthur away from her microphone). Also what is Sonic OVA? I never heard of that. I don't think the Animal Crossing movie is as hidden as that considering I've heard a few people talk about Animal Crossing: The Movie yet no one talk about Sonic OVA.

The Mii feature made it into City Folk. Go to the design tab of the in game menu (the Pencil icon on the bottom), click the Mii icon, and you can select masks of your Miis to effectively play as your Miis. It's not exactly how they originally planned to do it, but the feature is there.
Man, I was having such a shitty day, but it's so hard to be grumpy with animal crossing music playing.
Especially the music from the older games (mainly the GCN game).

Here's a bonus fact: When playing Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, at any point you can take out the disc and play the game as normal. This is likely because being that it's a port of an N64 game the whole game can be loaded into the Gamecube's Ram once the disc is first read.

Yay, thank you for this! The animal crossing series is the closest video game series to my heart; I remember playing wild world all the way back in 1st grade and I still play new leaf everyday :D praying for a brand new animal crossing on the switch! Lol

Lakitu1134 The worst thing is you had to PAY for him to come back and chew you out. If there was an option to turn him on or off at the start of the game, that would be fine.
and even at that point having him rant at you was an optional choice. if you lied and said "batteries died" or "i don't remember" he'll just let you go until you confess.

SonicFishies if you are on pc you can use a browser extension that plays animal crossing music from any game that matches up with your time of day and weather.
Ahhhh the feels....... this was great. My fav AC even over the greatness of New Leaf, is the GameCube one. That music is SO GOOD and the randomness and feistiness of some of the villagers is gold.
This was basically all the information in the Iwata Asks interview about New Leaf but still good stuff!

Was this aspect in the original Animal Forest/Animal Crossing games? The world was rendered a bit differently on those.
The original GameCube and N64 games used a 45° angle on a flat world, rather than on a cylinder. AC: NH lets you tilt the camera up to mimic the original game.

For those watching this after New Horizons' release, Totaka's Song or KK's Song can be heard randomly on the radio you are given at the beginning of the game.

This is one of my favorite did you know gaming.
I remember playing the first Animal Crossing for a year straight. I would wake up at 8am every morning before school, just to sell the fish I caught right before I went to sleep the night prior. I love the music in the first one more than its successors, especially the rainy day song.
Oh, and now you remember the story about the sick mother who played Animal Crossing in the same town as her son, she died, and years later he played it again only to discover his real life mom sent him a ton of letters filled with presents.

Things you missed:
A few names were based off of characters from books (Gulliver from Gulliver's Travels, Redd from Dante's Inferno).
In the first game when you reset the game while in someone else's town, you'll come out of your house with your face looking like a zombie (in addition with all items gone).
In the first game, if you keep resetting, Resetti will start threatening to completely erase your save data. If you do it enough it will actually blank out the screen for a few seconds making it look like he actually did it. Sometimes his brother Don will come out instead.
You can get tan in the first two games by staying out in the sun for a long time (no umbrella).
I need to revisit Animal Crossing. It's such a cozy little game.

I remember procrastinating for about 3 months back in 2002 about buying the GCN version. I knew nothing about the game except for what it said on the back of the box. I finally bought it and played it for about 16 hours straight, going into the next day, which is crazy considering how extremely limited the GCN version is compared to the AC's that came after. Still have my original GCN town saved although it's probably infested with weeds now.
e+ expanded on the cards, but like the cards say, + used them as well. The only thing e+ did was allow you to "wish" (negau) a villager into your town. AND they added more villagers, so thus more e+ cards were released with these villagers. Think of it as a sort of Welcome Amiibo to the amiibo cards, they're their own series of cards independent of the first, but able to work in the second.

Wait, do the researchers for this video not know what a midi guitar is? In what world is it "unlikely" that a video game composer who writes from his guitar would have one?? Hell, you don't even need a special midi enabled guitar for that anymore, as there are plenty of interfaces/boxes/programs that can convert it to midi data...
This is bonkers to me. You can easily get a midi guitar for like $400... Heck, even if he didn't use one, why make a big deal about how the guitar parts are midi? I've written convincing guitar parts in midi since the early aughts. It takes no special skill. I recently did a cover of Magical Mystery Tour that is 100% midi, using only a mouse, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Anyone getting paid to write midi parts knows Wtf they're doing, and would have no issue writing a convincing sounding instrumemt out of midi data.

I loved city folk because I'd play after school for an hour and that was about it. When I had it mobile I could play whenever and ended up building way to much quickly.
Simply put unless the game actually has much more gameplay I don't think I will play anything from the franchise again. It just feels like it could use things to actually play.
