Delighted that in the chorus they do that little anticipative syncopation bit, which I always felt naughty doing when singing this in Sacred Harp--but it's such fun!

Revelation 18 King James Version (KJV)
18 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

Not sure where I first heard this tune; I think my father used to sing it to us (among many others) at bedtime. All I know is that when I first heard it on "Spencer the Rover Is Alive and Well and Living In Ithaca" (Roberts and Barrands) I was totally familiar with it and was able to sing along with the chorus. This was a big motivator to me to look up and finally start listening to Sacred Harp songs on TH-cam, which blew my mind and led me to start going to sings.

"Hail the day so long expected, hail the year of full release,
Zion's walls are now erected, and her watchmen publish peace!
Throughout Shiloh's wide dominion, hear the trumpets loudly roar,*
Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen, to rise no more!"
*Alternative: "From the distant coast/plains of Shinar, the shrill trumpets loudly roar"
"Hark and hear her people crying 'see the city disappear!' '
Trade and traffic now are dying, lo! we sink and perish here!'
All her sailors who brought her treasures, crying from the distant shore,
Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen to rise no more!"
"All her merchants stand in wonder, 'what is this that's come to pass?'
Roaring like a distant thunder, crying out 'alas, alack!'
Swell the sound ye kings and nobles, priests and people's rich and poor,
Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen to rise no more!"
"Lo! The captives are returning, up to Zion see them fly,
while the smoke of Babel's burning rolls across the darkened sky,
Days of mourning now are ended, years of bondage now are o'er!
Babylon is fallen, is fallen, is fallen, Babylon is fallen to rise no more!"
"Zion's children raise your voices, and the joyful news proclaim!
How the Heav'nly Host rejoices, shout and echo back the same!
See the ancients of the city, terrified at the uproar!
    Babylon etc, etc"
"Tune your harps ye heavenly choir, shout ye foll'wers of the Lamb!
See the city now on fire, clap your hands and blow the flame!
Now's the day of compensation on the Scarlet Colored Whore!
    Babylon etc"
"Blow the trumpet in Mount Zion, Christ is come a second time,
Ruling with a rod of iron, all who once as foes combined!
Babel's garments we've rejected, and our fellowship is no more,
    Babylon etc"
I like how they even do the unwritten trick of having some parts come in a half beat early in places on "Babylon" to give a cool vocal effect. It's usually the bass part, but it sounds like the other parts in this recording.

In the Swan Arcade song, they also peculiarly switch the "year" and "day" in the first part.

@rkt739 The tune, the basic arrangement and the words are all 19th century North American as far as I can see. According to David Warren Steel, a leading shapenote scholar, the first two verses are by Richard McNemar and were first published in 1813, while the tune is indeed based on a Shaker melody, being "composed out of an old theme" by the Canadian W E Chute in the 1870s. If anyone has actual evidence for an English origin, I for one would love to see it.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Correct. This tune was written by Chute, based on Sons of Sorrow (332). There are 7 verses total that I know of (not sure how many were written by Chute, but it's telling that the chorus doesn't actually fit the meter properly, giving it that distinctive sound).

Stephen Sagar I used to baby sit for dave & Heather who are two of the three singing this when I was around 17 and he used to give me two bottles of beer from the Netherlands and tell me not to drink the sedement at the bottom of the bottle or i would have the shits for a week and then followed that with a load of girly magazines from the same place. RIP Dave Brady. Yorkshires finest and my mate Jack French who also played in Swan Arcade my all time hero and always will be along with Terry Bainbridge.

Great-sounding group! We sing this song from The Sacred Harp over here. Our words say 'Through our Shiloh's wide dominion' (Not 'England's) and I believe these singers also say 'Shiloh.' I'm attaching a Sacred Harp rendition, which perhaps you will allow to be posted here. If not - that's OK too.
Thanks for posting this great song!

Huh? This song was written by a Canadian named Chute, based on the older tune "Sons of Sorrow", 332 in the Sacred Harp. (This song is 117). It's likely that both are based on an even older tune, but this version is from the late 19th century.

Where do the lyrics you give come from, given that they're not the ones on the recording? And what's the evidence for a 17th-century source?

    • @martingosling3975
      @martingosling3975 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If you look below you will see that PLBrayfield submitted the lyrics which are the Sacred Harp version.
As to your second question I cannot help you, but like many in the UK I do understand that this was sung by the more radical elements of the parliamentarian armies during the English Civil War (including those who became known as the Diggers). I have seen many claims that this was written by the first person who published it in a book, but I hardly think that radical 17th century English soldiers would have stopped to get what they sang published! My point being that in that period much of the history of ordinary (common) people was passed down third hand or recorded at some point by observers, so applying the same tests as to the 19th century is dubious. Certainly many within the Sealed Knot (UK Civil War re-enactment society) have researched a great deal of detail about this period and as is mentioned elsewhere here, they sing it.

    • @justforever96

This song is by a Canadian man named Chute, based on the older tune "Sons of Sorrow". Both are in the Sacred Harp (and both bear some similarity to the Robinson tune "Restoration". Pages 332, 117 and 312, respectively.
