    Simple engraving on metal with the rotary tool! Let's try carving shapes with the pendant motor. You've asked me a lot to share how I do engraving on my designs, so today I'm excited to show you how! It's nothing complicated, I'm using various attachments called burrs for the pendant motor. Hope you enjoy this video!

    I always try to leave a comment; that was great Basia, thank you for showing us. I'm wondering if you don't mind telling, what size sheet do you find is best for the overlay? And, how is the Lion Forge engraver? One more tip from me (yay), Amazon sells big sets of those diamond burs for CHEAP - like $4-$7. Buying from jewelry supply is at least 6-10 times more expensive - who knows why. The cheap ones from China work well (they are the same as the Rio or Cookson, etc). They come in all one kind or mix sets - I love them. great video as always!

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much Heather! It depends on what type of finish I want to achieve. But usually I will try to have the surface nearly finished before engraving, simply because any additional steps will remove fine amounts of silver, therefore making the lines less deep. So usually the very last stage would be polishing or matte finish :)

      You need to try it out asap! You'll love it :) yes, I use something, but not sanding paper. I usually use different rotary tool attachments, but not too coarse, as they would affect the texturing. Mostly medium to fine grades of bristle wheel attachments

    You got wonderful and pretty comments. But no technical questions, really. How do you clean up all the jagged lines? I noticed you did not zoom in on the lines, but I was able to see jagged lines in your demonstration.

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why are you policing other people's comments?? 😂 If you have a technical question, then ask away, no need to get all worked up over what others say. This was a fast demo that was supposed to show only WHAT can be done, not how. Therefore, I didn't pay attention to the whole process, cleaning included. When I make lines on my actual projects, I'm usually not actively filming, so I'm able to focus 100% on the technique, and my lines don't require much cleaning. If they do, I use appropriate attachements for the rotary tool. Hope that helps with your concern.

    Are any of these burrs sharp enough to cut a shape in the sheet metal if traced enough times? Or would a different tool be needed for that I wonder?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm, do you mean like piercing? If so, it's best to use the jeweller's saw for that and simply cut this space out. These burrs are pretty sharp, so you can use them to make deeper lines/grooves, but I\m not sure how well the would do to essentially drill trhough the metal. I also don't thing that would be a safe job. So better use this for the work on the surface. And use drills to make holes in the metal and jeweller's saw to cut out. Hope that helps :)

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with these simple techniques, and for someone who isn't advanced, I would recommend doing it prior to forming a ring. It's much easier! However, if you feel confident, you can try after the ring has been formed! Make sure you have good equipement to hold the ring in one place, like engraving ball for example

    Amazing!
    But I can't hold my burr, it always slides through the metal and ruining my whole piece. I everything!
    please help me.
    keep up the amazing work.

      @@c.dreadz9197 Yes I figured if you moved your hand the opposite direction of the motion of the burr it will work out for you, so if the burr rotates clockwise you move your hand anti clockwise.
      I hope you get my explanation.

    Hello, Please I would like to know if you have to draw the design first with a pencil before engraving?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That definitely helps to know where to make the line! So I would suggest using some sort of giude, like the drwaing for example :)

    Hey there I have subscribed to your channel.Please can you tell me what the machine is called you are using to make the patterns with the burrs? And is their a cheaper option to buy? I’m just starting out. Thankyou 😊

      This is a speed motor, also called pendant motor or a rotary tool, with a flex shaft. The one I'm using is by Foredom, but Dremel also makes great ones and they're a bit cheaper :) There also other brands available, but I recommend Dremel and Foredom the most

    what speed do you recommend for engraving?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The speed I use with these particular bits is medium. Not too fast and not very slow. It's fast enough to have a smooth line, but not too fast, so I can still control it well. It's better to try it out and see what works for you, get the good feel of the tool. So I would recommend practicing on a brass or copper sheet! Good luck! :)
